Completion of £16m medical centre 'firmly in sight'

Yahoo15-06-2025
The completion of a £16m integrated care centre is "firmly in sight" following the installation of a new roof.
The Trowbridge Integrated Care Centre in Wiltshire has been described as a "state-of-the-art health and care facility" and is due to open to patients early next year.
The site will become the location for the minor injury unit and X-ray department that are currently based within the nearby Trowbridge Community Hospital.
Interim executive lead for cancer, planned care and community, Caroline Holmes, said: "The building work is well under way, the finish line is firmly in sight, and local people can now see their new integrated care centre really begin to take shape.
Using the latest green technology, such as solar panels and heat pumps, the centre is designed to be fully self-sufficient and net zero carbon.
Representatives from Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) marked the "milestone" occasion on the recently installed roof.
They were joined by the Mayor of Trowbridge, along with a number of NHS colleagues who will soon call the new centre home.
Ms Holmes thanked those who had helped bring the new centre to life.
She added: "When the very first spades went in the ground, it was difficult to picture how a brand new health and care facility could emerge from what was essentially a very muddy field. Yet, here we are."
The new centre is set to be a "flagship location" for local health and care, with teams from many different organisations, including HCRG Care Group, Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership and the Royal United Hospital, working together under one roof.

Measles vaccine plea ahead of school term

Parents are being urged by health officials to make sure their children are vaccinated before the return to school as measles cases still circulate in the West Midlands. Uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jabs by age five is as low as 75.8% in parts of the region, according the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) - the World Health Organisation recommends a 95% uptake to prevent outbreaks. It comes after Birmingham saw an outbreak in 2025 with 26 confirmed cases between January and June, government figures showed. Katie Spence, from the UKHSA, described measles as a "nasty virus" that can spread quickly among unvaccinated children and adults in places like schools and nurseries. "It can lead to serious health problems including ear and chest infections, inflammation of the brain, with some children ending up in hospital and being left with permanent disabilities. Tragically, in rare cases, it can even be fatal," she said. "As children under the age of one cannot be vaccinated against measles, it's important siblings are vaccinated to protect little ones and other vulnerable people – including those with weakened immune systems – who are unable to have the MMR vaccine and rely on the rest of us to protect them from measles." She added that if parents are unsure about their child's vaccination record, they can check their Red Book, the NHS app or contact their GP surgery. In 2024, figures from the UKHSA showed 329 of 465 (71%) measles cases across England from October 2023 to February 2024 were in the West Midlands. A GP in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham said at the time that, in the majority of cases, medics were seeing were in unvaccinated people. The latest measles data from the UKHSA this summer revealed that there have been 674 laboratory-confirmed measles cases reported in England since 1 January, with 145 in 3-31 July. The West Midlands had 34 out of the 674 cases. Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. Cornish care teams shortlisted for national award

Some of Cornwall's care teams have been nominated for a national award for helping more than 230,000 people. Cornwall Integrated Neighbourhood Teams (INT) are part of an NHS health programme to provide better care and reduce hospital admissions. It has been shortlisted for the Integrated Care Initiative of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards. Kate Shields, CEO of NHS Cornwall Integrated Care Board, said it was a "proud moment" for the team. She said Cornwall was "leading the way" with its neighbourhood teams, which were "a shining example" of the NHS' 10-year strategy. Cornwall Integrated Care Board said the teams helped solve several "well-known challenges" including making care more joined up and reducing the time for ideas to be put into practice. The county initially set up six INTs in 2024 in areas including Falmouth and Penryn, Truro, and St Austell. Michael Barrymore suffering from uncontrollable seizures that could cause death

Michael Barrymore revealed he has "uncontrollable seizures" which could cause death or brain damage if left untreated. The beloved TV presenter - who has shifted from Television to TikTok in recent years - said he had developed epilepsy after experiencing a mini stroke. On his now preferred social media site, the 73-year-old admitted he found his diagnosis "scary" and he'd had "several attacks this year". According to the NHS, symptoms of epilepsy - a condition that affects your brain and causes seizures - often start in young children and people over 50. Speaking about his diagnosis on the platform, the former game show host said: "A mini stroke caused me to develop epilepsy where I have uncontrollable seizures... "I suffer from cluster seizures, which affects a quarter of people with epilepsy. "It means I have more than one, usually three individual seizures in a short period of time." Michael must take emergency medication if he has a seizure. "I've had several attacks this year and have emergency medication at home if I go into a seizure. "It doesn't really affect my life otherwise, but it would be nice to talk with other sufferers on here about it." The entertainer, who has become popular with Gen Z with his TikToks and vlogs, has received more than 580,000 views on the video, which shows him in a hospital bed.
