Millions told to flee amid floods, landslides in Japan

Japanese authorities on Monday urged millions to evacuate their homes after heavy rains unleashed floods and landslides in the country's southwest, leaving several residents missing.
Television footage from various communities in Kumamoto prefecture showed houses, stores and vehicles submerged in about a metre of water.
Surging rivers swept away vehicles and damaged roads.
In six hours to early Monday, more than 37 centimetres of rain fell in Kumamoto prefecture's hardest-hit Tamana city, a record for the area, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Evacuation advisories and warnings were issued to more than three million residents in the southwestern regions, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Some 384,000 residents, mostly in Kumamoto, faced Japan's most serious evacuation warning, it said.
A father in Kosa town in Kumamoto went missing early on Monday after a landslide hit near his house while he stood outside his vehicle, a town official said.
His wife and their two children were safe inside the car, the official added.
In Misato town, also in Kumamoto, rescuers were trying to reach an elderly man trapped inside his house after it was struck by a landslide, the town's duty official said.
And two people in Fukuoka city reportedly were swept away in a surging river on Sunday and remained missing, national broadcaster NHK said. (AFP)

Photo: Reuters Hurricane Erin on Saturday strengthened to a "catastrophic" Category 5 storm as it barrelled towards the Caribbean, with weather officials warning of possible flash floods and landslides. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its latest report the storm's maximum sustained winds had increased to 255 kilometres per hour by 11.20 am ET, or 11.20 pm Hong Kong time. Erin, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season this year, was located about 170 kilometres northeast of Anguilla in the northern Leeward Islands, an area that includes the US and British Virgin Islands. The agency warned of "locally considerable flash and urban flooding, along with landslides or mudslides." Swells generated by Erin will affect portions of the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands through the weekend. Those swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda and the US East Coast early next week, creating "life-threatening surf and rip currents," the NHC said. The hurricane is forecast to turn northward by late Sunday. While meteorologists have expressed confidence that Erin will remain well off the US coastline, they said the storm could still cause dangerous waves and erosion in places such as North Carolina. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he had held a "coordination meeting" on Saturday, as France and Italy sent water bombers to an air base near Salamanca to help with the firefighting efforts. "The government continues to work to fight the fire with all the means at its disposal," he said on X. The most serious forest fires were in the northwest and west of the country, in the regions of Castile and Leon, Galicia, Asturias and Extremadura. Around 10 roads remain closed across the country, as well as the train line between Madrid and Galicia. Around 3,500 military from a special emergency unit were deployed around the country, with some political leaders calling for more. (AFP)
