Hugh Raymond Holmes, 35, had been released from jail on December 19 last year but the same afternoon he got into a fight on Faraday Street, Ferryhill.
The fight kicked off after Holmes' girlfriend, who had been a passenger in his car, claimed people in a van had been offensive to her.
Footage shows Holmes and James Cowie, 28 get into a violent confrontation after Holmes pulled over and confronted Cowie.
Holmes tries to punch Cowie who ducks the blow and proceeds to batter Holmes to the ground.
Holmes escapes the assault and gets back into his motor to drive away, Cowie then begins punching a male passenger in Holmes' car.
A brave innocent bystander who witnessed the violence tries to intervene to stop it, approaching Cowie and encouraging him to get back into his vehicle.
While Cowie and the victim are talking Holmes sped his vehicle straight at the two men.
Cowie manages to jump out of the way but the innocent bystander is struck by the motor and jammed between it and Cowie's van.
The victim suffered traumatic brain injuries and underwent seven long months of hospital treatment after the harrowing ordeal.
CCTV, recently released by Durham Constabulary, captured the entire incident.

Holmes has since been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent, inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, disqualified driving, driving with no insurance and refusing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.
The recently released lag pleaded guilty to all charges except causing grievous bodily harm.
Following a two-day trial at Teesside Crown Court last week, he was found guilty in just 20 minutes by the jury.
Holmes was jailed for 18 years and banned from driving for 15 years.
Cowie was sentenced to eight months immediate imprisonment but the term was considered served because of the time he had spent in custody.
DC Lauren Howe, who led the investigation, said: 'Holmes is a despicable criminal who clearly hadn't learnt any lessons from his previous crime which he had just been released from prison for.
"He left the victim with critical injuries just before Christmas and they continue to have a huge impact on him and his family.
'However, thanks to the bravery of the victim and the whole community pulling together, we were able to gather overwhelming evidence to charge Holmes and put him back before the court.
"We hope putting Holmes back behind bars for a significant amount of time will bring some comfort to the victim who, in his own words, continues to stand tall."

Man who crashed stolen car into wall told witness: 'Don't grass me up'

Man who crashed stolen car into wall told witness: 'Don't grass me up' Kyle Durham, 37, went on to tell the witness: 'Say it was two girls... I'm well-known round here' Kyle Durham, 37, took a Mini Cooper and drove it into a wall while intoxicated causing £22,000 of damage (Image: South Wales Police) An intoxicated man crashed a stolen vehicle into a wall and caused £22,000 worth of driving before telling a witness "Don't grass me up, I'm well-known round here." He later smashed a friend's flat up and took her car without permission, telling her: "You're not having your car back." ‌ Kyle Durham, 37, wrote off a Mini Cooper belonging to Rhiannon Williams on May 24 last year in Pontypridd after he had been given the keys by one of her friends. He crashed into a wall belonging to Transport for Wales but left the scene on foot having been witnessed. ‌ A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday heard at around 3am residents heard a loud bang in Wood Road and the defendant was seen to pull a woman out of the car. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter. ‌ Before he left the scene he spoke to a witness and said: "Please don't snitch on us." Blood was coming from his mouth and he ran off. Shortly later, he returned to pick up the car keys and again spoke to the witness, saying: "Say it was two girls. I've been to prison for 15 years. Don't grass me up. I'm well-known around here." The police were called and Durham was identified on CCTV footage and he was later arrested. ‌ Officers called Ms Williams and told her the Mini had been involved in a crash. The car was written off due to front-end damage and there was a hole in a wall, which would cost £22,822 to repair. In a victim personal statement read to the court by Tabitha Walker Ms Williams said: "For six to seven weeks I have been without a car and the insurance company has yet to pay out. "I work as a nurse, mostly agency, so I have to travel... I have only been able to work one shift a week and have had to use public transport. ‌ "I have lost around £500 to £600 a week. It's had a negative impact on my wellbeing and I feel I am the only person to suffer from the selfish actions of others." On December 21 last year Durham attended the home of friend Charmaine Thorne and became angry. He punched a door, causing it to fall off its hinges, flipped a coffee table, threw a television set from a wall and ripped wires which caused it to spark, threw a coffee table at a wall, damaged an Xbox, snapped an iPhone, and damaged a lightshade. ‌ The victim attempted to get into her car but the defendant told her to get into the passenger seat and he got into the driver's seat. During the journey he confronted another driver and said: "What's your f****** problem?" before driving off. Ms Thorne left the car to get into a shop and told staff Durham had taken her car. At this point the defendant said: "You're not having your car back." ‌ He then drove off and left Ms Thorne to get a bus back to her parents' house. Durham, formerly of Yr Hen Fuarth, Treforest, was arrested on December 31 after he was seen hiding near a rugby pitch and was pursued by police on foot. In her victim personal statement Ms Thorne said: "He made me feel really upset. I am too frightened to let anyone inside my property as I don't trust anyone. ‌ "I am afraid to leave my house and feel isolated from friends. I am struggling to sleep and believe the whole incident has impacted my mental health. The defendant later pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle-taking, taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, theft of motor vehicle, and criminal damage. The court heard he has 16 previous convictions for offences including theft from the person, aggravated vehicle-taking, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance. ‌ In mitigation Andrew Taylor said his client's life has been "blighted" by cocaine and alcohol but he is now free of cocaine. It was said he now has a new partner and has the offer of employment and accommodation from his uncle. Mr Taylor asked the court if an order could be made to prevent the defendant from attending pubs, specifically his father's pub where he has access to free alcohol, but Judge Lucy Crowther said this was not possible. Judge Crowther sentenced Durham to 24 months imprisonment. Article continues below The defendant was also made subject to a driving ban for two years upon his release and a restraining order for two years.

UK's 'worst driver' leads cops on 70mph chase despite already having SIX bans

Serial offender Robert Peter Holliday, of Crook in Durham, once told officers from Durham Constabulary he got an "adrenaline rush" from leading them on high speed chases One of Britain's worst drivers was jailed after leading police on a chase at double the speed limit - despite already being banned from driving six times. ‌ Robert Peter Holliday - who in 2022 had an "appalling" 22 convictions for 65 offences - previously told officers that he gained an "adrenaline rush" from forcing officers to pursue him, often at high speed. ‌ During his latest crime on August 4, he was spotted by a PC motoring through Staindrop, County Durham, with active disqualifications in place. It comes after boy, 5, is murdered by kidnappers because his mum couldn't pay £39 ransom. ‌ Holliday's Ford Transit van was pursued through the village where the 37-year-old sped up to 70mph in the 30mph zone before coming to his senses, giving up and pulling over. Video footage shows him getting out while holding his keys aloft as he walked round to the PC to hand them over. ‌ He was put into the back of the police car where checks revealed he was not just a banned driver, but had six active disqualifications. Despite being caught flouting his latest driving ban, Holliday still seemed hopeful that he could be dealt with at the roadside. ‌ But he was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance. Holliday, of Billy Row, Crook, was remanded in custody and put before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Tuesday August 5 where he pleaded guilty to both offences. ‌ He is now spending the rest of the summer in prison after being sentenced to 18 weeks and has also added another driving ban to his record with a further 33-month disqualification and more than £200 in costs on top. Holliday's driving rap sheet is nothing short of terrible, with multiple motoring-related convictions. He was jailed for 20 months in August 2015 after a police chase three months earlier - carried out while he was out on licence from a previous prison sentence for dangerous driving. ‌ At the time, Durham Crown Court heard Holliday had a "fascination" with vehicles - and was initially followed by police after he was seen driving a Renault Clio without a seatbelt on Cockton Hill Road, Bishop Auckland, on May 26. He then sped up to 90-miles per hour on the A689, while undertaking vehicles and heading the wrong way around a roundabout. ‌ During the chase, a father-of-two driving a Volkswagen Golf tried to block him to help police but he rammed his car, containing a two-year-old child and four-week-old baby. A previous hearing heard that when he was interviewed by the Probation Service, he admitted that seeing the blue light of a police car gave him an "adrenaline rush". It was revealed that at the time he had a number of driving offences and had been jailed in each of the last two years for motoring matters, including a previous chase in which police cars were rammed. ‌ In November 2022 he was back in court for driving a Volkswagen Transporter which sped off when approached by police on October 1. Durham Crown Court heard that it began a lengthy pursuit in which he drove dangerously in built up urban and residential areas in Bishop Auckland and Crook, reaching 85mph. Then again he carried out risky overtaking manoeuvres and went the wrong way around a roundabout. ‌ Holliday and his passenger leapt out of the van as it was still travelling at about 30mph, leaving it to crash through someone's fence and into a garden. Tabitha Buck, prosecuting, told the court he had "an extraordinary record" of driving offending with 22 previous convictions for 65 offences, dating from January 2003. They included dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. At that court appearance, Holliday appeared via video link from Durham Prison as he was jailed for 16 weeks by magistrates for other motoring offences committed five days before the latest incident. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary described Holliday as "another selfish driver off the roads."
