20. Clemson 42, Louisville 36 (2016)
This might have been the best quarterback duel of the quarter century, matching a pair of future NFL talents. Clemson's Deshaun Watson and Louisville's Lamar Jackson combined for 854 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns in a raucous, sweaty showdown in Death Valley. After a scoreless first quarter, the two QBs lit up the night. Watson led Clemson to a 28–10 lead at halftime. Jackson then led Louisville to 26 unanswered points for a 36–28 lead midway through the fourth quarter. A long kickoff return set up a Clemson score, then the Tigers got the ball back and scored again for a six-point lead. It looked like Jackson would get the final say, driving Louisville into the red zone in the final minute, but on fourth-and-12, receiver James Quick caught a pass and misjudged the down marker, going out of bounds at the Clemson 3, a yard short of a first down. Watson and the Tigers went on to win the national championship. Jackson went on to win the Heisman.
—Louisville doesn't make Athlon's preseason top 25 for the 2025 college football season, but does appear in the 'the next tier' section.
—The Watts name is synonymous with football in Columbus, Georgia. And now, linebacker and safety Antonio Watts is making a name for himself at Louisville. Here's what to know about Antonio and his talented family.

—Pat Kelsey's full appearance on Jon Rothstein's podcast is available here.
—Clev Lubin is ready to show the world that he can be the same beast at Louisville that he was at the group of five level.
'That's the reason I came here,' he said. 'I felt Louisville gave me a great opportunity to come compete at a high level, play against other great teams, and I know that's what we plan to do. With the guys we have, when you have success with D-line, when you have guys that are hungry and want a lot, you work better as a group. There's more success when you work better.'
So far through spring ball and the first week of fall camp, he has not looked like someone who previously came from a G5 school, and has undoubtedly been making an impact.
'He's a nonstop guy,' Hagen said. 'He's like the Energizer Bunny out there, he's just full go all the time. When guys get lazy in parts of the game when the game drags, that's when he's going to beat his opponent and come up with big place for you. That's what I love about him.'
It's not only been on the practice fields where Lubin has been making his mark. Between the influx of fresh faces on the defensive line and the returners who are stepping into a larger role from last season, therein lied the opportunity for someone to take a step forward as a leader. Lubin had taken up that responsibility, and is routinely holding guys up to a high standard of expectations.
—Both Louisville's defensive coaches and players are bullish that the unit is poised for a bounceback season in 2025.
—The latest episode of the From the Pink Seats podcast is here.
—After hardly seeing the field in 2024, it was a bit of a surprise to see Jaleel Skinner come back to Louisville for another season. Now the tight end transfer from Miami is getting first team reps and looking like he could be a major threat in the passing game.
—The laughter makes it better.
—Isaac Brown is a Sporting News First Team Preseason All-American.
—This is a dime from Miller Moss to Caullin Lacy.
—Josh Heird explains how U of L is dividing its revenue sharing money.
—One of the best regular season nights in the history of Cardinal basketball.
—Christian Academy WR (and former Card Chronicle cover boy) Ja'Hyde Brown has gameday visits with Alabama, Wisconsin, Auburn, Indiana and Louisville all scheduled for this fall.
—Five things we learned from Thursday night's NFL preseason games.
—Cardinal safety D'Angelo Hutchinson is ready to step into a new role this season.

Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend

Auburn makes major announcement for Iron Bowl weekend originally appeared on The Sporting News Bo Jackson's Return to Auburn will include the 40th anniversary of his Heisman glory. When Jackson suited up for the Tigers in 1982, fans knew he was special. But no one could've predicted he'd become a sports icon. A two-sport pro athlete, a Nike ad legend, and one of the most dominant forces in college football history. Now, Auburn is making sure that legacy never fades. On Nov. 29, during this year's Iron Bowl, the Tigers will honor the 40th anniversary of Jackson's 1985 Heisman Trophy season. A tribute fit for a giant, as Bo's name will echo through Jordan-Hare Stadium once again. A Heisman Season for the Ages In 1985, Jackson didn't just play football, he redefined it. He rushed for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging a staggering 6.4 yards per carry. At the time, that rushing total ranked second in SEC history. And even now, four decades later, it's a benchmark that defines greatness. That season earned Jackson Auburn's second Heisman Trophy, solidifying his place in college football history. But it was more than numbers, it was the way he played. Grace, speed, and pure strength. More Than Just a Football Star Jackson wasn't just dominant on the gridiron. He starred in three sports, football, baseball, and track during his time on The Plains. After Auburn, he made sports history again, becoming the only athlete ever named an All-Star in both the NFL and MLB. He played eight seasons in the majors and was named the 1989 MLB All-Star Game MVP. In the NFL, he ran for 2,782 yards and 16 touchdowns in just four seasons with the Raiders before a hip injury ended his football career in 1991. A Tribute 40 Years in the Making Now, Auburn is bringing it full circle. Jackson will be honored during this year's Iron Bowl, which is historically Auburn's biggest stage. It's not just about looking back. It's about reminding fans, recruits, and rivals alike what excellence looks like. 'Bo's 1985 season ranks among the greatest in the storied history of Auburn and the Southeastern Conference,' said AD John Cohen. 'It is our privilege to honor Bo.' 'It was great': Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed's SportsCenter conversation on Friday

With Texas A&M's 2025 season opener against UTSA just two weeks and one day away, starting quarterback Marcel Reed has begun to make the media rounds, speaking to ESPN's SportCenter on Friday afternoon just a day after former Aggie QB and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel made an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, where he discussed his belief in Reed's ability heading into the redshirt sophomore's first full starting season. Reed's confidence is noticeable every time he is in front of a camera, which is what every head coach expects from the team's leader. One of the many reasons the Tennessee native is likely beaming from ear to ear is the team's revamped wide receiver rotation, now featuring transfers KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State), who chose the Aggies over multiple blue-blood suitors. Regarding his conversation with Manziel, Reed revealed what he and the college football legend discussed to SportsCenter, including Manziel's memorable connection to future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans. 'It was great. When you grow up watching college football, you think of Johnny Manziel for sure. I have been blessed to be able to come to this college and have the opportunity to speak with him.' Amid his struggles, Texas A&M has continued to back Manziel, and he has done the same, connecting with the current roster whenever possible and developing a strong connection with Reed, which could pay off on the field. When asked about his new weapons in the passing game, Concepcion was the first name that came up, and, of course, Reed noted the former NC State standout's elite ability to make plays whenever the ball is in his hands. 'He has a history of being a really good receiver, and I'm really excited to play beside him this year, give him the ball and get him some yards.' Concepcion is the current active leader in touchdown receptions (16) and has already shown his ability as a redzone threat during several preseason practice clips. Texas A&M's passing game will only improve if Reed makes the necessary strides and gains an early rapport with Concecpcion, Mario Craver, Terry Bussey, Ashton Bethel-Roman, and the newly formed tight end rotation. But Nolan, stuff just goes off his back. He's just kind of wired the right way, but I thought he was average last week."
