Big Pharma Faceoff: Wegovy To Join Mounjaro In India's Booming Weight Loss Drug Market
Last Updated:
While both drugs belong to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class, Mounjaro has a dual mechanism (GIP and GLP-1), which clinical trials suggest may provide superior weight loss outcomes
Just four months after Eli Lilly launched its blockbuster weight-loss drug Mounjaro in India, Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk is gearing up to roll out Wegovy on Tuesday, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle in India's booming obesity drug market.
Mounjaro, launched in March 2025, has already seen a wave of interest from both doctors and patients. The drug has clocked sales worth Rs 24 crore within three months, with consumption tripling over the weeks. Novo Nordisk, sensing Mounjaro's runaway momentum, is believed to have fast-tracked the launch of Wegovy in India. The injectable drug, which will start losing its patent starting in 2026, is now set for its debut on Tuesday.
'India represents a potentially massive structural growth opportunity for GLP-1 drugs, but current penetration remains minimal. Eli Lilly has taken the lead by launching Mounjaro in India—one of the most successful product launches in the Indian market so far," said Vishal Manchanda, a pharma analyst at the financial services firm Systematix.
'Novo Nordisk is aware that its GLP-1 drug, semaglutide (Wegovy), will lose patent protection in India within the next few quarters. The company is now racing against time to stay ahead of the generic competition expected to flood the market by 2026," he said, adding that to do so, Novo may have fast-tracked the launch of its semaglutide-based brands—Ozempic and Wegovy—to gain an early mover advantage over generics and to effectively compete with Mounjaro.
Wegovy's pricing strategy is still under wraps, but it is expected to be competitive, especially with generic versions of semaglutide looming.
According to pharma research consultancy, Pharmatrac, a dose of Wegovy may cost slightly less than Mounjaro. Its estimates show that while Wegovy may cost around Rs 14,000 per month, Mounjaro currently costs around Rs 17,000 per month.
'With the Wegovy launch, there may be some cannibalisation that may happen from the semaglutide oral tablets sold under the brand name Rybelsus. But Wegovy may arrest the loss of semaglutide patients that may be happening to Mounjaro," Sheetal Sapale, vice-president (commercial), Pharmatrac, told News18. 'Mounjaro and Wegovy will collectively raise the awareness and penetration of anti-obesity injectable drugs in the market."
What's the difference between the two drugs?
The brand name Mounjaro is a drug called Trirzepetide, whereas the brand Wegovy is a drug called Semaglutide. While both drugs belong to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class, Mounjaro has a dual mechanism (GIP and GLP-1), which clinical trials suggest may provide superior weight loss outcomes.
Comparing the two injectable drugs, while Mounjaro begins with a dosing of 2.5 mg once a week injection, the starting dose for Wegovy is 0.25 mg. After four weeks, doctors generally upgrade Mounjaro's dose to 5 mg per week, and Wegovy's dose is upgraded every four weeks until reaching the maintenance dose of 1.7 mg or 2.4 weekly dose.
The oral tablets of semaglutide are already sold by Novo Nordisk in India under the brand name Rybelsus. According to the industry estimates, there are approximately 32,000 patients on Rybelsus currently who can directly shift to the drug's injectable form, Wegovy.
According to Dr Anoop Misra, a renowned endocrinologist, 'Mounjaro (tirzepatide) generally outperforms Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss, achieving up to about 15-20 body weight reduction (due to its dual GLP-1 and GIP action) compared to Wegovy's 14-17 per cent in trials."
However, Misra said, 'Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction, with broader access for non-diabetic weight loss and adolescent use, while Mounjaro is primarily approved for diabetes (used off-label for weight loss)."
Hence, Misra, who is the chairman at Fortis C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, said, 'I would use these similar medicines depending on patient profile, including complications, cost and availability. Both weekly injections have similar gastrointestinal side effects."
Experts believe the market will heat up even more once Wegovy or semaglutide loses its patent. With semaglutide's Indian patent set to expire in 2026, companies like Dr Reddy's, Cipla, and Biocon are preparing for a generic onslaught that could bring prices down by nearly 90 per cent.

In charts: Why West Asia is important for India beyond trade
Tensions in West Asia remain high following the Israel-Iran conflict, putting India's interests in the region at risk. The crisis threatens India's oil imports and overall trade, but its implications go beyond economics. Stability in West Asia matters to India as many Indians study, work, and send money back home from the region. The escalation of the conflict, leading to the temporary airspace closure in four nations—the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait—on Monday, makes the situation tense for India and Indians in the region. The evacuation of over 2,000 Indian nationals from Iran and Israel under 'Operation Sindhu" has reinforced the gravity of India's stake in the stability of the region. Several of these were students. While the share of overseas Indians in Israel (0.30%) and Iran (0.03%) is minuscule, West Asian nations together account for over 25% of the 35 million in total, data from the ministry of external affairs showed. There is no formal definition of West Asia (or Middle East as popular in Western countries), but it broadly covers Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, the UAE and Yemen. Also Read: Mint Explainer | Strait of Hormuz: Will Iran shut the vital oil artery of the world? The region has also seen interest among a few Indians looking to pursue education abroad. In 2024, nearly 11,000 students were in West Asian nations for studies, data shared by the education ministry in Lok Sabha showed. Though this constitutes only about 1.3% of 760,000 students studying abroad, the UAE, Iran and Israel are among the top choices. Deep ties Millions of Indians, primarily employed in blue-collar jobs, in West Asian countries, fuel the economic engine in the region as well as in India. The largest number in the region is in the UAE, hosting 3.6 million Indians. This is followed by Saudi Arabia (2.5 million). Smaller yet significant Indian communities exist in Kuwait (1 million) and Qatar (0.8 million), and Oman (0.7 million). In recent years, the region, particularly the UAE, has also become a magnet for high-skilled Indian professionals due to tax-free salaries, zero capital gains tax, and a Golden Visa program that offers residency of up to 10 years to people in select fields. In terms of studies, the UAE is popular as several international universities have campuses and colleges in the country. Iran, the second favourite destination, is generally preferred for medical studies and engineering. Also Read: Israel-Iran conflict: Echoes of history haunt West Asia The conflict between Israel and Iran could destabilise the region upon escalation. This can impact many Indians residing in the region or disrupt plans of those who are planning to go there. The experience with the Russia-Ukraine war offers some context: the number of Indians pursuing studies in Ukraine slumped to 252 in 2024 from around 2,200 in might As one in four overseas Indians resides in West Asian countries, India gains significantly from inward remittances. India's remittances touched $118 billion in 2023-24, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India. These remittances help in financing a part of India's trade deficit and offer a cushion during the period of external shocks. Also Read: High-value, white-collar inflows have led a shift in India's inward remittances While the biggest share came from the US, the West Asian nations together accounted for a 38% share, or $45 billion. The UAE contributed 19.2%, followed by Saudi Arabia (6.7%) and Kuwait (3.9%). The two nations locked in the conflict, Israel and Iran, are not among the major sources of inward remittances for India. However, if the conflict spreads—as witnessed on Monday after Iran targeted the US army bases in Qatar and Iraq—it could lead to disruptions in other West Asian nations where India does have deep human resource and monetary connections.

Israel-Iran Tensions Keep Markets Volatile The domestic market witnessed volatility after media reports suggested Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had ordered the military to strike Tehran after Iran fired missiles in violation of a ceasefire. 'In light of Iran's blatant violation of the ceasefire declared by the President of the United States — through the launch of missiles toward Israel — and in accordance with the Israeli government's policy to respond forcefully to any breach, I have instructed the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)… to continue high-intensity operations targeting regime assets and terror infrastructure in Tehran," Reuters quoted Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz as saying on Tuesday. Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a complete ceasefire. First Published: June 24, 2025, 14:43 IST

Big $40 billion consumption boom on the horizon! Tax cuts, cheaper loans & 8th Pay Commission to drive new wave - what sectors should investors bet on?
According to HSBC's analysis quoted in the report, India's current discretionary spending stands at approximately $250 billion. (AI image) India is on the verge of a consumption boom - one that could potentially lead to an annual boost of $30–40 billion! A substantial consumer spending surge of $40 billion is poised to impact India's economic landscape. This significant development, expected to materialise within the next 18 to 24 months, could present a notable opportunity for stock market investors. India's vast population of 1.5 billion, coupled with increased disposable income from income tax reductions, salary increases and reduced borrowing costs (thanks to RBI's 1% repo rate cut), positions this consumer spending wave as particularly noteworthy. According to an ET report quoting HSBC Securities, analysts project yearly discretionary spending increases ranging from $30-40 billion. The calculations are straightforward: Tax reductions for individuals are projected to generate $12 billion in additional savings. The anticipated 8th Pay Commission's 15% salary enhancement could provide government and defence personnel with an extra $18-26 billion. Combined with $3-4 billion in mortgage payment reductions due to lower interest rates, this creates a substantial boost to consumer spending potential. According to HSBC's analysis quoted in the report, India's current discretionary spending stands at approximately $250 billion. The stimulus could enhance spending capacity by roughly 15%, which will be funds in consumers' hands. Whilst some individuals might opt to save or invest these gains, market analysts predominantly anticipate that a significant portion will be directed towards consumption. According to BofA Securities' Rahul Bajoria, India's consumption indicators show promising signs of improvement, supported by ongoing policy measures. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Undo With controlled inflation, front-loaded monetary easing, and reduced commodity prices helping with input costs, conditions appear favourable. Despite private consumption growth declining alongside GDP, Bajoria anticipates consumption to exceed GDP growth soon, driven by stabilising household incomes, reduced tax burdens and better credit accessibility. BofA projects significant strengthening of real wages in rural India, supported by low food inflation and steady income patterns, the ET report said. The monetary policy adjustments, including rate reductions of 100 basis points, liquidity enhancement exceeding Rs 12 lakh crore, and relaxed regulatory requirements for NBFCs and MFIs regarding risk weights, are collectively positioned to boost urban demand. Bajoria notes that personal credit growth, previously hindering consumption, is expected to show substantial improvement in upcoming quarters. Road Ahead for Investors To Make The Most Of Consumption Boom BNP Paribas' Kunal Vora identifies emerging opportunities in consumer sectors, particularly in food delivery and quick commerce. The food delivery sector has evolved into a sustainable duopoly following years of intense rivalry. Vora identifies Swiggy and Eternal as primary beneficiaries, anticipating substantial cash flow generation and increased participation in India's $1 trillion retail market, the report said. HSBC's Yogesh Aggarwal observes that whilst specific sector impacts remain uncertain, Indian consumers are increasingly adopting higher spending patterns. This includes vehicles, consumer products, electronic items, and recreational activities such as restaurant dining. The significance lies in the widespread nature of this consumption growth, spanning various product categories and consumer income levels. Valuations present an additional consideration. Nomura indicates that consumer equities have experienced significant corrections over six months, currently trading below their five-year averages by one standard deviation. Whilst previous consumption decline led to corporate earnings revisions, government initiatives focusing on demand stimulation through fiscal and monetary measures are demonstrating positive outcomes. According to ET, Nomura anticipates that reduced inflation and GDP growth, supported by FY26 tax reductions, will boost volume recovery and enhance margins, particularly as raw material costs decrease. They favour GCPL, Marico and Tata Consumer, organisations demonstrating robust pricing, premium offerings, innovation and strong brand value. Rural consumption is experiencing a revival. Incred Equities notes a significant 3.3% uptick in rural consumer confidence in May 2025, attributed to profitable rabi crop yields, early monsoon onset, and positive kharif season predictions. Reduced fuel costs and RBI's interest rate reductions have harmonised urban-rural consumer sentiment. Trideep Bhattacharya of Edelweiss Mutual Fund observes favourable conditions emerging. With declining inflation, improved liquidity, and budget provisions offering urban consumers a 5-7% income increase, he anticipates a significant shift in consumption during the latter half of the year, considering it a surprising performer of 2025. His fund introduced a consumption-focused strategy earlier this year. While essential goods have underperformed due to mass-market demand constraints, discretionary segments are showing recovery signs, the report said. For investors, the crucial $40 billion consideration isn't about the certainty of consumption growth but rather their readiness to capitalise on it. Economic indicators are positive, liquidity conditions are favourable, and growth prospects appear sustainable. The previous occurrence of such aligned factors resulted in substantial returns from Indian consumption stocks, suggesting potential similar outcomes.
