Family scammed out of R15K in KZN holiday booking con
North Coast Courier reports that this is according to the acting chairperson of the Umhlali Policing Forum, Josha Daniel, who says reports to Umhlali SAPS, of scam-related incidents, are on the rise, averaging two per week.
'We are seeing everything from fake pet sales to fraudulent Airbnb-style listings and investment cons,' says Daniel.
'Scammers are using social media and fake websites to trick people into making payments for services that don't exist.'
One recent case in Tinley Manor saw a Hilton family of 13 scammed out of more than R15 000.
According to Michelle Wilkstrom, who made the booking, everything seemed to be above board as she found the accommodation through what she believed to be a reputable platform. After making payment and receiving booking confirmation, her family got ready for the weekend away and made the trip.
'When we arrived at the accommodation on June 14 to book in, there was no caretaker as promised to open,' says Wilkstrom.
The caretaker of a neighbouring property eventually responded to their calls and asked what was happening.
'We advised we were there to book in for the long weekend. He told us there was someone that had been staying there for two weeks already.'
After getting in touch with the legitimate property owner, they said there was no record of the booking. The property owner claimed that their email and banking details had been hacked and that Wilkstrom had dealt with a scammer.
Wilkstrom opened a case of fraud at Hilton SAPS and the investigation is ongoing.
Daniel urged property owners and letting platforms to strengthen verification processes and advised consumers to be cautious when booking online.
'The property sector, particularly in short-term letting, needs to be vigilant,' he said.
'Owners should regularly audit their digital profiles and ensure booking communications happen through secure, traceable platforms. As consumers, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.'

Trio jailed for attempted murder of off-duty Amanzimtoti cop
The Durban Regional Court yesterday sentenced three men to 10 years' direct imprisonment for the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer. According to The Witness, the three – Ndabezinhle Mvune (29), Simiso Mthimkhulu (47) and Thamsanqa Msabala (29) – attempted to murder Captain Johannes Grotius in August 2021. Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said Grotius had been walking along Cato Crest Street in Amanzimtoti when he noticed a suspicious taxi with three occupants. He approached the vehicle intending to ask if they needed help. 'During the course, an altercation ensued, and one of the suspects hit the captain with a beer can. The captain picked it up and threw it back in the taxi. The three accused descended on the captain and severely assaulted him,' read the statement. Grotius sustained a fractured skull, brain bleeding, broken fingers and several lacerations to his face and body. His wife witnessed the incident, and he was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred for brain surgery. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Grotius was medically boarded by SAPS, where he had been attached to the Air Wing Unit. 'In 2022, Mvune, Mthimkhulu and Msabala were arrested by Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation. They were charged accordingly and appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court several times until they were found guilty on May 29,' said Mhlongo. The three were also declared unfit to possess firearms. KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation head Major General Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and commended investigators for their work. ANC suspends Thapelo Molepo over social media claims of R700 million tender fraud
The ANC in Limpopo has suspended party member and whistleblower, Thapelo Molepo after leaked explosive documents alleging R700 million in irregular tenders at Polokwane Municipality allegedly involving Mayor John Mpe. Image: Facebook/Thapelo Molepo ANC in Limpopo has suspended one of its members, Thapelo Molepo, for three years after he was found guilty of bringing the party into disrepute. A disciplinary hearing held by the ANC's Mphogodiba Branch Disciplinary Committee on August 15, 2025, found that Molepo had breached the party's policies. A letter that IOL News has in its possession states that Molepo has been suspended for three years. ANC Mphogodiba Branch Disciplinary Committee chair Marothi Letsoalo confirmed that the letter outlining Molepo's suspension was accurate. 'We can confirm that the letter is accurate. We sent the letter to him, but we did not publicise it - he is the one who decided to do so,' Letsoalo told IOL News. Letsoalo said that Molepo had failed to attend disciplinary hearings despite being summoned several times. He said Molepo once attended a meeting but refused to sign the roll call, rendering the meeting invalid. A disciplinary hearing was eventually held in absentia on August 15, 2025, at Sehlale Primary School, following a re-invitation letter dated August 6, 2025. Letsoalo said the hearing focused on Molepo's social media activity, where he allegedly insulted ANC leaders, members, deployees, and members of the public. 'He was found guilty of engaging in unethical or immoral conduct that detracts from the character, values, and integrity of the ANC, behaving in a manner or making statements that bring or could bring the ANC into disrepute, and acting in a way that provokes or could provoke division or negatively affect party unity,' Letsoalo said. The committee resolved to suspend Molepo's ANC membership for three years, effective from August 17, 2025. During the suspension, Molepo is barred from participating in any ANC activities or representing the party in any capacity. He is also prohibited from exercising any rights under the ANC Constitution, holding ANC office, or representing the party on any public platform. Molepo, a former ANC member in the Polokwane Sub-Region under the Mphogodiba Branch, was suspended on August 15, just two days after leading a protest calling for the removal of Polokwane Mayor John Mpe and municipal manager Thuso Nemugumoni. Molepo has been vocal in alleging corruption and irregular tender activities worth more than R700 million at the Polokwane Municipality, allegedly involving Mpe and Nemugumoni. Now serving as the convener of the activist group Concerned Citizens of Polokwane (CCP), Molepo has published documents on social media that he claims expose tender fraud. He alleges that 28 companies, many of which are reportedly owned by associates of Mpe and Nemugumoni, were awarded tenders irregularly. Mpe, who also serves as the regional chairperson of the ANC in the Peter Mokaba region, has previously denied the corruption allegations, calling them part of a political smear campaign. ANC provincial spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed that the party is aware of the allegations made by Molepo. 'The ANC in Limpopo notes the allegations. Those making them should approach law enforcement agencies so the claims can be tested,' Machaka said. 'We caution members of the public against making unsubstantiated allegations. Video: Culpable homicide conviction in Mbombela as Johan Louwrens awaits sentencing at home
The Nelspruit Magistrate's Court convicted Johan Louwrens of culpable homicide and on a charge of a hit-and-run (alternatively, leaving the scene of an accident) during his appearance yesterday. Lowvelder reports that Magistrate Patrick Morris agreed to an application by the defence that, although Louwrens has been convicted, he be allowed to await sentencing at home. 'Taking into consideration that the accused has been attending the court for so many years, it is the court's ruling that he be released on warning, pending the sentencing date,' said Morris. He postponed the matter to October 3 for sentencing and added that he expected the victim impact statement and the pre-sentencing report to be ready by then. When delivering the judgment, Morris pointed out that 17 state witnesses testified during the trial. At least three witnesses testified that they noticed that the white Toyota bakkie that knocked down businesswoman Letisia Niemann (38) outside Mustangs – The Dancing Place at around 23:00 on September 28, 2019, had a puncture. The magistrate said that Louwrens' own evidence, in which he claimed he had hit a ditch and sustained a puncture, corroborated the three witnesses' testimony. He added that although he denied having hit a woman with his bakkie, Louwrens himself had admitted to being at the scene. A vehicle tracking expert also placed Louwrens' bakkie at the scene and gave evidence that Louwrens had been driving recklessly around the time of the accident. Eben Niemann, the victim's husband, testified that he saw Louwrens inside his bakkie shortly after the accident and could positively identify him. Eben told the court that he and his wife were walking along the street outside Mustangs when Louwrens' bakkie knocked her down. 'She was severely injured and I sat next to her while waiting for an ambulance that later took her to Kiaat Hospital.' Evidence suggested the bakkie veered into oncoming traffic before hitting Letisia, who died in hospital shortly afterwards. Louwrens handed himself over to police and was granted R1 500 bail. The case, initially withdrawn due to police bungling, was later reinstated, with Louwrens released on a warning. Meanwhile, Niemann's aunt, Gerida Blignaught, said she was disappointed that Louwrens has been allowed to go home, even though he has been found guilty. She said he was supposed to be sent straight to jail because he had been convicted.
