The Compleat Food Group creates COO role to drive growth
Having expanded through M&A since the company formed through a merger in 2021, The Compleat Food Group has promoted Brian Byrne to COO. He takes on his new role from today (1 May).
With more than two decades in global supply chain leadership roles, Byrne "will take overall accountability for the end-to-end supply chain, including planning, sourcing, manufacturing and delivery", according to a statement announcing his appointment.
CEO Nick Field said: 'Brian has already made a significant impact since joining us, and his promotion to chief operating officer is a natural next step as we evolve our business.
"His expertise, leadership and drive for excellence will be instrumental as we continue to build a supply chain that is agile, resilient and built for the future."
The group's portfolio, grown through acquisitions, includes baked goods such as pies and quiches, and sausages. It also features deli items like olives, antipasti and pickles. Pork Farms, Wall's Pastry, Squeaky Bean, Unearthed and Vadasz are among the company's brands.
The Compleat Food Group was formed in 2021 when private-equity owner, Paris-headquartered PAI Partners, merged its UK portfolio companies Winterbotham Darby and Addo Food Group.
The first acquisition out of the blocks was pie maker Wrights Food Group in 2021. That business has an extensive portfolio stretching across pasties and sausage rolls, ready meals and bakery.
Dairy-free cheese business Palace Culture followed in 2023, adding the Kimcheeze, The Mouldy Goaty, Sacre Blue and Holy Smokes alternative cheese brands to the group offering.
Then last year, dips and party food specialists SK Foods and Zorba Foods were added to The Compleat Food Group portfolio. Harvey & Brockless, a producer of cheeses, charcuterie, olives and deli products, also joined the line-up last year.
And in 2025, the group acquired fellow UK business The Real Yorkshire Pudding Co. for an undisclosed sum in March, but has also made redundancies at some of its UK factories this year.
Headquartered in Surrey, south of London, The Compleat Food Group employs more than 5,500 people across 16 sites and has an annual turnover in excess of £1bn ($1.3bn), according to the company's LinkedIn page.

YZ: MagneRide is fully and continuously digitally controlled in a wide range of damping forces with millisecond response times. MagneRide® can be completely recalibrated through the ECU, to make the vehicle more comfortable, or sportier, or balance between them. Q: How does this digital control advantage translate to SDV applications? YZ: The system is completely tuneable in software. It enables manufacturers to fully customise settings for regional markets. These CEOs went from interns to the top job at Nike, Target, and beyond
Many interns hope to land a full-time job with their employer. Every once in a while, they can end up running the company. Target said Wednesday that Michael Fiddelke, who first joined the retailer as an intern in 2003, is set to take over as CEO in February 2026. He's not the only former intern to rise to CEO. It's happened before at major companies, including Nike and Xerox. Some of these CEOs started at the bottom, left, and later returned to run the business, while others spent decades working their way up the ladder. Here are five leaders who started as interns and climbed to the top of their companies. Elliott Hill at Nike Nike CEO Elliott Hill is a veteran of the sportswear giant who worked at the company for 32 years before initially retiring in 2020. In October 2024, he returned to the Oregon-headquartered company to succeed John Donahoe as the CEO. Hill started his career at Nike as an apparel sales intern in 1988. Michael Fiddelke at Target Fiddelke is set to replace retiring CEO Brian Cornell, who has held the role since 2014. The soon-to-be chief exec has worked at Target for more than 20 years in roles across merchandising, finance, operations, and human resources. He is currently Target's chief operating officer and was chief financial officer before that. Fiddelke worked at Deloitte for three years before he began at Target. He got started in 2003 as a finance intern while pursuing his MBA at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Mary Barra at General Motors General Motors' Mary Barra went from co-op student to CEO, as she wrote on LinkedIn. She started her career in 1980 through a co-op program with the General Motors Institute, now called Kettering University, where she studied electrical engineering. "As a co-op student, I rotated through the different functions on 6- to 12-week assignments," Barra wrote in a 2016 LinkedIn post. "It was amazing to see the entire enterprise from both granular and holistic points of view. It opened my eyes to the many different careers that someone could pursue within a large company like GM." She became GM's CEO in 2014 after more than 30 years at the company, according to her LinkedIn profile. Ursula Burns at Xerox Ursula Burns served as CEO of Xerox, a document management company, from 2009 to 2016. She started her career at the company as an intern in 1980 and made headlines as the first Black woman to become CEO of a Fortune 500 company. "By the way, that can be advantageous. For 10 years at Xerox, I was the only Black woman in the room," Burns told the Harvard Business Review in 2021 when asked about being a minority in the workplace. Dennis Muilenburg at Boeing Dennis Muilenburg was the CEO of the global aerospace company Boeing from 2015 to 2019. He started off as an engineering intern in 1985 and eventually became the COO before replacing James McNerney as the CEO, Boeing said when he was appointed to the role. Muilenburg resigned from his post as CEO and from the board in 2019. His departure came as the company faced the fallout of two crashes involving a 737 Max Plane in 2018 and 2019.
