Huawei readies new AI chip for mass shipment as China seeks Nvidia alternatives

plans to begin mass shipments of its advanced 910C artificial intelligence chip to Chinese customers as early as next month, two people familiar with the matter said.
Some shipments have already been made, they added.
The timing is fortuitous for Chinese AI companies which have been left scrambling for domestic alternatives to the H20, the primary AI chip that Nvidia had until recently been allowed to sell freely in the Chinese market.
This month, US president Donald Trump's administration told Nvidia that sales of the H20 would require an export licence.

's 910C, a graphics processing unit (GPU), represents an architectural evolution rather than a technological breakthrough, according to one of the two people and a third source familiar with its design.
It achieves performance comparable to Nvidia's H100 chip by combining two 910B processors into a single package through advanced integration techniques, they said.
That means it has double the computing power and memory capacity of the 910B and it also has incremental improvements, including enhanced support for diverse AI workload data, they added.
All sources were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Seeking to limit China's technological development, particularly advances for its military, Washington has cut China off from Nvidia's most advanced AI products including its flagship B200 chip.
The H100 chip, for example, was banned from sale in China in 2022 by U.S. authorities before it was even launched.
This has allowed Huawei and Chinese GPU startups such as Moore Threads and Iluvatar CoreX to go after what has primarily been a market dominated by Nvidia.
The U.S. Commerce Department's latest export curbs on Nvidia's H20 "will mean that Huawei's Ascend 910C GPU will now become the hardware of choice for (Chinese) AI model developers and for deploying inference capacity," said Paul Triolo, a partner at consulting firm Albright Stonebridge Group.
Late last year, Huawei distributed samples of the 910C to several technology firms and started accepting orders, sources have said.
Reuters was not able to ascertain which companies would be primarily producing the 910C.
China's SMIC is manufacturing some main components of the GPUs using its N+2 7nm process technology although its chip yield rates are low, a source has previously said.
At least some of Huawei's 910Cs use chips that were made by Taiwanese contract chip manufacturing giant TSMC for China-based Sophgo, according to one of the sources and a fourth person.
The Commerce Department has been investigating TSMC's work for Sophgo after one of its TSMC-made chips was found in a 910B processor.
TSMC made nearly three million chips in recent years that matched the design ordered by Sophgo, according to Lennart Heim, a researcher at RAND's Technology and Security and Policy Center in Arlington, Virginia, who is tracking Chinese developments in AI.
Sophgo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
TSMC said it complies with regulatory requirements and it has not supplied Huawei since mid-September 2020.

The media outlet said that the Marines are from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California, who US Northern Command had said Sunday were on a 'prepared to deploy status'. President Donald Trump was meanwhile asked if he planned on sending Marines to LA. "We'll see what happens. I mean, I think we have it very well under control. I think it would have been a very bad situation. It was heading in the wrong direction. It's now heading in the right direction,' he said on Monday.

US Seeking 'Handshake' On Rare Earths From China, White House Aide Says
Washington: The three top U.S. trade negotiators are seeking a handshake with China in London talks to seal the agreement on rare earths reached by Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said on Monday. "The purpose of the meeting today is to make sure that they're serious, but to literally get handshakes," Mr Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told CNBC in an interview. "I expect it to be a short meeting with a big, strong handshake," Mr Hassett added. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were set to meet with Chinese counterparts in London on Monday to defuse the trade dispute between the two superpowers that has widened in recent weeks to include export controls over goods critical to global supply chains. Chinese export controls on rare earths was a very significant sticking point, Mr Hassett said. With China controlling most of the global rare earth and magnet supply, its restrictions on sending those to the U.S. could disrupt production for American companies, including automakers, that rely on those materials, he said. Asked about the Chinese objection to U.S. curbs on semiconductor exports, Hassett said: "Our expectation is that after the handshake, then immediately after the handshake, any export controls from the U.S. will be eased, and the rare earths will be released in volume, and then we can go back to negotiating smaller matters."

California plans to file lawsuit against Trump over National Guard deployment to protests
California officials planned to file a lawsuit Monday (June 9, 2025) against President Donald Trump in response to the administration's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard to confront immigration protesters who took to the streets in Los Angeles. Attorney General Rob Bonta said the deployment 'trampled' the state's sovereignty. He planned to seek a court order declaring that Mr Trump's use of the Guard was unlawful and ask for a restraining order to halt the deployment. Mr Bonta said the suit will be filed later Monday (June 9, 2025). 'Commandeering a state's National Guard without consulting the governor of that state is illegal and immoral,' Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, told MSNBC on Sunday (June 8, 2025). The streets of the sprawling city of four million people were quiet Monday (June 9, 2025) morning but the smell of smoke hung in the air downtown, one day after crowds blocked off a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire as police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades. The law enforcement presence was heavy, with police cars blocking the street in front of the federal detention facility that was a focus of the protests. While much of the city was spared from any violence, clashes swept through several downtown blocks and a handful of other places. It could take days to clear the debris from burned cars and to clean off or paint over graffiti sprayed on City Hall and other buildings near the detention facility. Sunday (June 8, 2025) was the third and most intense day of demonstrations against Trump's immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 Guard troops spurred anger and fear among many residents. U.S. officials said about 1,000 National Guard members were in the city under federal orders by midday Monday (June 9, 2025). The full 2,000 members authorised by the president were expected to be on the ground by the end of the day. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the details of military operations. Many protesters dispersed as evening fell and police declared an unlawful assembly, a precursor to officers moving in and arresting those who refuse to leave. Mr McDonnell pushed back against claims by the Trump administration that the LAPD had failed to help federal authorities when protests broke out Friday (June 6, 2025) after a series of immigration raids. He said his department responded as quickly as it could and had not been notified in advance of the raids. Mr Newsom, meanwhile, has repeatedly said that California authorities had the situation under control. He mocked Mr Trump for posting a congratulatory message to the Guard on social media before troops had even arrived in Los Angeles, and he told MSNBC that Mr Trump never floated deploying the Guard during a Friday (June 6, 2025) phone call. He called Mr Trump a 'stone cold liar.' The admonishments did not deter the administration. 'It's a bald-faced lie for Newsom to claim there was no problem in Los Angeles before President Trump got involved,' White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement. National Guard troops stood shoulder to shoulder Sunday (June 9, 2025) morning in LA, carrying long guns and riot shields as protesters shouted 'shame' and 'go home.' After some demonstrators closely approached the Guard members, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street. Minutes later, the Los Angeles Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway until state patrol officers cleared them. Federal authorities later said there was no enforcement activity at that Home Depot. The weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the LA area climbed above 100, federal authorities said. Many more were arrested while protesting, including a prominent union leader who was accused of impeding law enforcement. The last time the National Guard was activated without a Governor's permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Centre for Justice. In a directive Saturday (June 7, 2025), Mr Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is 'a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.' Mr Trump told reporters Sunday (June 8, 2025) as he prepared to board Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, that there were 'violent people' in Los Angeles 'and they're not going to get away with it.' In San Francisco, officers arrested and later released about 155 people for refusing orders to disperse, said officer Paulina Henderson with the city's police department. Officers monitoring one protest declared an unlawful assembly when people in the group became violent, the San Francisco Police Department said. Many protesters left the scene, but some remained while others moved to another area where they vandalised buildings and a police vehicle.
