Oman strengthens food security through model farm programme
As part of the program, over 9,000 tissue-cultured date palm saplings and 6,000 high-quality fruit tree seedlings have been distributed to farmers across the governorate, covering more than 140 acres of cultivated land. The initiative supports economic-scale farms in all three wilayats of Al Dhahirah, helping them adopt modern irrigation systems and apply advanced agricultural practices.
The program aims to improve productivity, raise the quality of local produce, and increase farmers' income through the cultivation of carefully selected fruit varieties, including mango, Eureka lemon, Omani lime, guava, fig, and grapes. It also encourages a shift toward water-efficient farming methods by requiring the installation of modern irrigation systems as a condition for support.
According to the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah, the model farms serve as living examples of what sustainable and profitable agriculture can look like when guided by structured planning, smart technology, and continuous field support.
The ministry works closely with farmers to provide technical guidance, regular follow-ups, and field inspections. This hands-on approach ensures that farms not only meet production targets but also operate efficiently and sustainably in the long term.
Though currently focused on Al Dhahirah, the program extends to other governorates as part of Oman's broader agricultural development strategy. Officials emphasize that the ultimate goal is to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and equip local farmers with the tools needed to compete in a modern agricultural landscape.

Oman: Major development projects in Al Dhahirah Governorate reviewed
Muscat: Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, conducted a field visit to Al Dhahirah Governorate, during which he reviewed several vital development projects serving the marketing of fisheries, livestock production, and water resources in the Wilayats of Yanqul and Ibri. The Minister was briefed on the progress of the project and the market's components. This project is considered an important service project aimed at strengthening the fish marketing system in the Wilayat and enhancing the efficiency of seafood trade in a healthy and organised environment. The Minister also visited the water dam in the Dhahir Al Fawares area of Ibri, implemented through community partnerships, and observed the dam's positive impact in replenishing groundwater and protecting residential and agricultural areas from flood hazards. He listened to an explanation from specialists about the dam's performance and its role in improving water resource management in the region. The Minister also visited the Gulf International Company's table egg production project in Ibri. This project is one of the leading investment projects in the food security sector. Established in 2019, it is considered one of the largest projects in the Gulf region, spanning an area of 18 million square metres at an estimated cost of OMR26 million, with a daily production capacity of up to one million eggs. He was briefed on the production stages and technologies used in poultry farming, emphasising the importance of supporting these projects that supply the local market with high-quality food products. SALALAH - Construction has officially commenced on a major new tourism project along Dhofar's southern coast, with the first phase of development valued at RO 25 million and total investments expected to exceed RO 130 million, according to site observations and project documentation. The project, titled 'Boutique Hotel Salalah and Marina,' is being spearheaded by Al Wathba Hospitality, and is set to transform over 2.5 million square metres of coastal land into a premium tourism and leisure destination. A prominent signboard at the project site—visited this week by Oman Observer—confirms that construction activities are underway, with early works and land preparation already visible. The development will include a luxury beachfront hotel, an integrated marina, and supporting tourism infrastructure designed to enhance Salalah's year-round appeal. Design and engineering responsibilities are being handled by leading international firms. Oman: Khareef Dhofar opens new horizons for SMEs
Muscat: Intense efforts are being made to develop, advance and support Omani youth to promote sustainable development through the participation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Dhofar Khareef season. Coinciding with the Dhofar Khareef season, the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development seeks to highlight the contributions and innovative experiences of Omani projects and active SMEs across the various Dhofar Khareef locations, as they serve as visitor attractions and contribute to creating a unique tourism experience for the season. SMEs are participating in the Dhofar Khareef season to showcase their diverse products and services, opening new horizons for direct marketing and strengthening their presence in the local market. The Sultanate of Oman seeks to enhance the role of SMEs in supporting the national economy by empowering entrepreneurs and expanding their reach to a wider segment of visitors and consumers, in addition to highlighting their creativity in events accompanying the khareef season. Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen Mohammed al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, emphasised that the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025 devotes significant space to supporting Omani small and medium enterprises. This will enable Omani business owners to showcase their products to visitors, enhancing growth opportunities and highlighting the local character of the tourism experience. The work assigned by Dhofar Municipality to SMEs increased by RO 6.5 million by the end of the third quarter of 2024, compared to approximately RO 4 million in 2023. This growth in SME participation in Khareef Dhofar reinforces the partnership and integration approach between the Authority, government institutions, and the private sector in Dhofar Governorate, to continue efforts to stimulate and support the sustainable growth of SMEs in various events and activities held in Dhofar Governorate. The number of entrepreneurs benefiting from the activities and services provided by the event sites during the Khareef Dhofar last year 2024 reached approximately 328 business owners, both male and female. The activities implemented during the various tourism seasons also provided a range of temporary job opportunities for many SMEs and productive families in the governorate. Dhofar Municipality also provides ongoing support to SMEs throughout the governorate's various tourism seasons to strengthen their position in stimulating the tourism sector and support job seekers seeking to operate public sites and parks during the governorate's various tourism seasons.
