Rockers ready to have a ball for fundraiser
Dedicated rockers Bulletproof Convertible are pulling out all the stops for this weekend's Dead Rockers Ball at Wingatui, a fundraiser for the Dunedin Fire Brigade Restoration Society.
The event will be held this Saturday from 7.30pm at Wingatui Hall, 270 Gladstone Rd North.
Audience members can dress up in their favourite style, or come along as a dead rocker, and dance the night away to the music of the three-piece "swamp rock" outfit.
The trio of Silas Waring (guitar), Alex Ramsay (drums) and Paul Southworth (double bass) play a high-energy, 1950s' influenced style of music that features original songs.
Along with the music, there will be raffles, an auction, food and snacks.
Funds raised will go towards the work of the Dunedin Fire Brigade Restoration Society, founded in 1971, which is dedicated to the restoration, preservation, and maintenance of Dunedin Fire brigades' history.
The group has a collection of 18 fire engines, equipment, uniforms and historical records.

Photo: Gregor Richardson For more than a decade, the last thing Blueskin Bay children have been having in the playground next to the Waitati library is a ball. Waitati resident Mandy Mayhem said when the library was extended 12 years ago, all the playground equipment was removed, and all that remained in the area were a couple of trees and some berry bushes, making it a very unexciting place to play. "There's no playground — nothing for the children. "It's just crying out for some toddler play equipment." No money was budgeted to replace the playground equipment, so parents in the area are holding a fundraising event on Saturday at 7.30pm — the Waitati Dead Rockers Ball. She said the area had recently undergone maintenance work, including an expanded area with retaining wall and a new fence. So it was now a blank canvas for a few fun and accessible pieces of play equipment. "There will be some ideas and designs for local parents to be inspired by, and they can indicate what they would like to see there. "In the meantime, we are getting started on the fundraising while a community vision for the space is created." She said the Dead Rockers Ball would include prizes for the best-dressed dancer, raffles, plants and hampers to win, as well as a mystery bottle auction. Dunedin-based three-piece swamp rock band Bulletproof Convertible would provide '50s-influenced and "danceable as hell" music for the ball.

Photo: Star files Swamp rock trio Bulletproof Convertible return to Waitati next weekend, bringing another Dead Rockers Ball fundraiser — this time in support of the Blueskin Library playground. The event will be held next Saturday, August 16, at Waitati Hall, with doors opening at 7.30pm. Band members Silas Waring (guitar/vocals), Alex Ramsay (drums) and Paul Southworth (double bass/vocals) are "stoked" to be part of such a great community cause as raising funds for the library. The fundraising Dead Rockers Ball was the brainchild of parents with young children living in the Blueskin Bay area, who were keen to raise funds to install play equipment for toddlers at the library garden. The area has recently undergone maintenance work but there is no play equipment. With a "blank canvas" to work with, the community is discussing options for the space, including swings, climbing equipment and sensory panels. The Dead Rockers Ball will feature a night of danceable music, prizes for best dressed, raffles, plants and hampers to win, and a mystery bottle auction. Fundraising rock concert for Methven Lions

PHOTO: FILE Bulletproof Convertible, a three-piece rock band from Dunedin, is returning to Mid Canterbury for a Dead Rockers Ball to raise funds for the Methven Lions. Band members Silas Waring, Alex Ramsay and Paul Southworth, known for their high energy performances, will play at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall on July 26. There will also be raffles, auctions and Kiwi snacks and supper. Event promoter Simon Vare said the band had performed a free performance at the hall earlier this year supported by Methven teen band, Herding Cats. It was attended by some members of the Lions who were keen to team up with the band for a community event during winter. The trio play original songs with a 1950s influence and perform a mix of country, blues sprinkled with a healthy dose of punk rock and their Dead Rockers Ball is a full production show. The music appealed to all ages, included fairy lights, displays and photo booths, Vare said. ''In some of these small towns we get 18-year-olds, we get 80-year-olds. ''They're edgy, it's an edgy show. ''It's very danceable and fun night.'' He said the band, which performed the events as a hobby, did around eight a year – a couple north of the Waitaki River. He said the evening, like an old town hall dance, started with snacks on the tables and was followed by a hot food supper at 9pm with plenty of room for dancing. ''Be comfortable, we are going to rock it hard and have you dancing … we want you to come on the journey with us. You can wear a ball dress or dress as your favourite dead rock star, leather and denim? Or just come as you are … sweet as.'' He said Bulletproof Convertible were keen to hear from any groups or organisations in Ashburton wanting to benefit from hosting their own Dead Rockers Ball event. ''We would love to set something up in Ashburton,'' Vare said.
