Trapped for 3 hours: 8 Lucknow restaurant workers stuck in lift; rescued by ART team using hydraulic spreader
The incident occurred around 2:53am in a commercial building near Munshi Pulia, Indira Nagar, which houses a jewellery store on Ring Road.
The elevator, which halted abruptly on the ground floor, failed to open, leaving the group stuck in a confined, poorly ventilated space. Despite desperate attempts to force the doors open and calls for help, there was no immediate response, leading to growing panic among the trapped youths.
Fortunately, one of the workers managed to place a distress call to emergency services. Fire station officer Shatrughan Kumar from Indira Nagar Fire Station was the first to respond, swiftly deploying a rescue team to the site.
Chief fire officer Ankush Mittal confirmed that a fire tender and an Advanced Rescue Tender (ART) were rushed to the location. 'Using a hydraulic spreader, our team forced open the lift doors and safely rescued all eight individuals.

The rescued workers were identified as Aman (21), Arun (21), Shivam (20), Ishant (17), Vipin (19), Akash (19), and Saurabh (21). All of them are employees at a restaurant owned by Rajat Dwivedi, a resident of Rajajipuram.
Following the rescue, fire officials initiated a preliminary inspection of the elevator and flagged serious concerns regarding the building's lift maintenance and safety protocols.

The incident has raised alarm about the enforcement of building safety standards in commercial spaces, especially those with high footfall and late working hours, said locals.
In a similar case on July 15, two sanitary workers—Apurv Verma of Sadar and Ojaswi of Saadatganj—were rescued after being trapped for over two hours in a malfunctioning lift at Prem Plaza, behind Jawahar Bhawan in Hazratganj.
Fire Station Officer Ram Kumar Rawat and his team responded around 5am and safely evacuated the duo without injuries. The cause of the malfunction is yet to be determined, and a lift inspection has been initiated.
