Tour de France Femmes: Pauline Ferrand-Prevot dominates queen stage to take yellow before final day

New York Times02-08-2025
Team Visma Lease-A-Bike's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot put down a dominant display in the queen stage of the 2025 Tour de France Femmes to take the stage win and yellow jersey before the final day on Sunday.
Ferrand-Prevot dropped favourite climber Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) with 8.5km to go on the Hors Categorie — the hardest category — climb Col de la Madeleine, eventually joining and overtaking Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek) and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) to win by a minute and 45 seconds.

While once more there is no change in the points or mountains classifications, the GC battle is has been shaken up before the final day, with yellow-jersey wearer Kim Le Court no longer in the top ten and Ferrand-Prevot's closest competitor Gigante being over two-and-a-half minutes away. Le Court suffered a crash on a descent earlier in the stage and without anyone waiting, lost significant time on the leaders.
Former Tour winner Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) managed to make up some time on the final climb to take third in the GC on Saturday but will need to make up over 3:18mins on Sunday to repeat the overall win.
It is the first time the Col de la Madeleine has appeared in the women's modern Tour, having been faced 27 times in the men's race.
Sunday will host the final day of the 2025 Tour de France Femmes, taking the peloton 124.1km from Praz-sur-Arly to Chatel. It will be another tough day in the mountains to decide the winner of the Grand Tour, over three categorised climbs including another HC climb Col de Joux Plane.
If Ferrand-Prevot defends her lead on the final stage, she will make history as the first Frenchwoman to win the Tour de France Femmes.

Report – Inter Milan To Focus On Offloading Fringe Midfielder After Completing Ademola Lookman Purchase

Inter Milan will intensify their efforts to offload out-of-favor midfielder Kristjan Asllani after completing Ademola Lookman's signing. According to La Stampa via FCInter1908, the San Siro giants refuse to let any distractions stand in the way of their pursuit of Lookman. Talks with Atalanta have reached an impasse, but the player's wish to join Inter could make the difference. Indeed, Lookman's agents are currently working with the Nerazzurri to unblock negotiations with La Dea. Once they've signed Ademola Lookman, Inter will focus on other deals. Inter Milan to Focus on Selling Kristjan Asllani After Completing Lookman Deal MILAN, ITALY – JANUARY 15: Kristjan Asllani of FC Internazionale controls the ball during the Serie A match between FC Internazionale and Bologna at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on January 15, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) Kristjan Asllani has fallen out of favor at San Siro, with Cristian Chivu ruling him out of his project. Therefore, the club has put the 23-year-old on the market, hoping to earn around €18 million from his sale. However, the former Empoli midfielder turned down a transfer to Real Betis earlier in the summer. Indeed, he is keen to stay in Serie A, where only a handful of teams can afford his price tag. After Bologna and Fiorentina, Torino have joined the race to sign Inter's fringe midfielder. Yet, Marco Baroni's men are hoping to land the Albanian on loan with an option to buy. That's not what Inter chiefs have in mind.

Rory McIlroy reveals he was approached about being playing Ryder Cup captain

We are inching closer and closer to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black and soon enough we will know which United States players will square off against which European ones. The biggest question within the two groups lies on the American side and whether or not Captain Keegan Bradley will put himself on the team as a player as well. Speaking on Wednesday before the BMW Championship, reigning Masters Champion and top European Rory McIlroy noted that he has been approached himself about the idea of being a playing captain. For what it's worth, he doesn't think it is possible to pull off. It is very possible that Rory is speaking his truth and noting that he does not view the possibility of being a playing captain in the Ryder Cup as something that anyone, obviously himself included, can pull off in our current day and age. We should take him at his word. …but this could also be gamesmanship! The Ryder Cup is an arena void of rules and regulations (generally speaking) and Rory might be trying to get into the head of the Americans here with a bit of a long game play. The clock is ticking. Keegan Bradley will have to make a decision soon. Will what Rory said play a factor for him at all? We will see.

Swansea City medical booked as target caught up in bizarre scandal

Here's your round-up of all the latest Swansea City news for Wednesday August 13. Swans inch closer to Yalcouye deal Swansea City are hoping to unveil Malick Yalcouye within the next 24 hours after reaching an agreement to take the highly-rated midfielder on a season-long loan. Yalcouye was in attendance at the Stadium to watch his new side ease their way past Crawley Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, and was at Fairwood earlier today to complete a medical and other formalities. "He's been involved with Brighton in pre-season, and we'll have to see in training where he's at," Sheehan said. "We might have to integrate him into it. "But I imagine he could come into the squad on Saturday." Kone joins QPR Former Swansea City transfer target Richard Kone has completed a move to Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee. Sources close to negotiations claimed the 22-year-old was the subject of two failed bids from the Swans earlier in the summer, while Preston North End and Toulouse were also believed to have had bids knocked back. Swansea were initially expected to return with a third bid, but substantially cooled their interest in search of other targets. Leicester City were another side to admire the Ivorian, but failed to firm up their interest with a bid, opening the door for a move to Loftus Road. "It's an amazing feeling, I'm really glad to join an amazing team, a great club. I can't wait to get started," Kone told the club's website. "I made my mind when the opportunity comes, I'll be ready. I'll be ready to take it. By God's grace, it took the time that it took, four years, and when the time was right, I did take my chances and here I am." 'No offer' for Sylla amid bizarre scandal Swansea City are reportedly yet to make a concrete offer for alleged target Moussa Sylla. Reports in France claim Swansea, Sevilla, Valencia, and Angers have all expressed an interest in the Schalke forward, but German publication Bild says there's currently nothing on the table. The same publication is also tracking a bizarre scandal involving the 25-year-old and his dog. It's claimed Sylla left his Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 'Ghost', with a dog-sitter at the Albert Schweitzer Animal Shelter in Essen earlier this month, and has since refused to take the dog back, allegedly stating he "unfortunately no longer had any use" for it. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone. Sylla has vehemently denied those allegations, and hit back with a statement through French lawyer Dylan Bourkab. "For several days, Mr. Moussa Sylla and his family have been the target of a media campaign based on false, distorted and out-of-context information," the statement read. It all comes amid growing uncertainty around the player's future in Germany, French publication L'Equipe stating Sevilla, Valencia and Angers are among the other clubs linked with a move.
