Dehradun: In a bid to improve waste management across the city, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has issued CUG (closed user group) phone numbers to its garbage vehicle drivers, allowing residents and ward councillors to coordinate with them more effectively.
Dehradun currently generates over 450 metric tonnes of waste every day.
On Tuesday, the DMC distributed CUG phones to 40 drivers across 25 wards. The phone numbers will also be displayed on the vehicles, making it easier for residents to contact the staff. According to officials, this initiative aims to reduce delays, improve accountability and ensure waste is collected reliably. In the past, irregular garbage collection often forced residents to dispose of waste in public spaces.
By making contact details available, the DMC hopes to reduce littering, address grievances promptly, and further strengthen its waste management system.
This is the first phase of the initiative, with more numbers to be allocated soon, officials said.
The initiative comes after DMC took over door-to-door waste collection in Feb this year, following the failure of multiple private agencies to streamline the process.

Since then, the corporation claimed that waste collection has risen from 46% to 80% across the city, and the number of garbage collection vehicles has increased to 234, with an additional 50 to be introduced soon, said commissioner Namami Bansal.

Bansal said that starting July 1, the DMC will roll out a comprehensive overhaul of its waste management system. "The goal is to build an integrated system entirely managed by the civic body — reducing dependency on third-party vendors, cutting costs and making waste collection more efficient," she added.

2 coaches of Jan Sadharan Express derail near Kanpur

1 2 Kanpur: Two coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express (15269) derailed between Kanpur and Tundla in Uttar Pradesh on Friday afternoon. The derailment occurred near Bhaurpur outer area near Kanpur while the train was switching to the loop line at point and line number four to give passage to two passing trains. The slow speed of the train averted a major derailment, said rail officials. About 15 passengers sustained minor injuries. The up track remained closed for three hours, brining 12 trains to halt at nearby stations. Senior railway officials and emergency response teams reached the site and carried out relief operations. The Sabarmati Jansadharan Express had reached Kanpur Central Station at 3:07pm on Friday, more than two hours behind its scheduled arrival of 12:50pm. Following a brief 10-minute stop, it proceeded onwards. Around 4:15pm, while being directed to the loop line near Bhaurpur station's outer yard, the sixth and seventh coaches derailed. Loco pilot Chaman Ahmed and loco inspector Sunil Sharma from Tundla were operating the engine during the incident. The derailment caused complete disruption of the up track. Railway operations continued on the down track. A medical vehicle dispatched from Kanpur Central Station was halted at Panki upon confirmation of no casualties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo Loco inspectors Brajesh Kumar and Sanjay Srivastava arrived with an accident relief train at 4:52pm. DMC command centre integrates door-to-door waste collection, begins ops

1 2 3 Dehradun: Amid unimpressive Swachh Survekshan performance and city-wide complaints about erratic waste management, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Friday launched its Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), based on the Indore model, to closely monitor waste collection and track garbage movement to processing plants. The Mayor inaugurated the centre — the first of its kind at the municipal level in Uttarakhand. Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen door-to-door garbage collection and streamline waste management in the state capital. Managed by corporation personnel, the ICCC is also being hailed as a major cost-saving initiative. "This is a major step towards technological empowerment in cleanliness and solid waste management. On average, we were spending ₹15.5 lakh per month on project monitoring companies. That cost has now reduced to around ₹7 lakh with the ICCC, and this includes disaster management and dengue mitigation as well," said municipal commissioner Namami Bansal. In the past, project monitoring companies tracked only their designated areas, while legacy waste sites were managed separately. The ICCC now brings all systems under one roof, integrating door-to-door collection, transport to processing plants, and eventually, source segregation, making the entire process more transparent, accountable, and efficient. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to overcome CICS issues without being a mainframe expert - Modernization without disruption CIO | Rocket Software Undo The tech-based model allows real-time monitoring and prevents data manipulation by third parties, ensuring quicker resolution of citizens' complaints. "Our vehicles are supposed to leave by 7 am. By 9 am, we will know which routes weren't covered or where more manpower is needed. Corrective steps can then be taken promptly so that the public is not inconvenienced. Through GPS monitoring, we will also identify underperformers and repeat offenders. Disciplinary action can be taken, while consistent performers can be incentivised," she added. Notably, Dehradun generates over 450 metric tonnes of garbage daily and has not performed well in Swachh Survekshan rankings. Officials hope this new initiative will help reverse that trend and resolve persistent issues in garbage collection. In areas such as Mohkampur, Dharampur, Doon Vihar, and Kishanpur, garbage collection has remained irregular. Strikes by third-party contractors further impacted services, prompting DMC to take over door-to-door waste collection in Feb this year. Since then, the corporation has increased its fleet to over 250 collection vehicles, and Closed User Group (CUG) numbers have been issued to drivers for better coordination with residents. Officials claim that waste collection has improved from 46% to 80% since the DMC takeover, with the goal of achieving 100% household and public area waste collection.

Former Rashtra Sevika Samiti Chief Pramiltai Medhe Passes Away at 97

1 2 3 Nagpur: Pramiltai Medhe, former Pramukh Sanchalika (chief) of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the women's wing of Rashtriya Svayamsevak Sangh ( RSS ), passed away at the age of 97 on Thursday morning at Devi Ahilya Mandir in Dhantoli, where she resided since 1965. She had been unwell for the last three months and critically ill for over a week. She breathed her last at 9.05am. According to her final wishes, her body will be donated to AIIMS Nagpur on Friday, August 1, at 8am. Her mortal remains were kept on the ground floor of Devi Ahilya Mandir on Thursday, where hundreds paid tributes. A lifelong swayamsevika, Pramiltai was associated with the Samiti since childhood and went on to hold the highest position in the organisation. Born on June 8, 1929, in Nandurbar, Maharashtra, Pramiltai held a BA and BT degree. She was fluent in Marathi, Hindi, and English, and known for her disciplined and organised life. She taught at CP and Berar High School, and later worked as a senior auditor in the DAGPT department, before taking voluntary retirement 12 years early to fully dedicate herself to the Samiti. From 1978 to 2003, she served as Akhil Bharatiya Pramukh Karyavahika, with special responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo She later became Pramukh Sanchalika from 2006 to 2012, handing over the role to Shantakkaji in 2012. Her tireless work, including a 266-day Bharat Parikrama at the age of 75, stands as a testimony to her indomitable spirit. While talking to the media after paying tributes, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said, "Her entire life was devoted to the Samiti. For over 60 years, she worked relentlessly — even in the difficult terrain of the North-East, where she often travelled alone for months at a time. That is an example for us. Her personal warmth, care, and discipline left a deep impact. Her absence will be felt by all, but she is also a source of energy and inspiration. " Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the passing of Medhe, calling her life a shining example of dedication to society and national service. In a condolence message written in Marathi, posted on X, he said, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Pramiltai Medhe, former Pramukh of Rashtra Sevika Samiti. Her entire life was devoted to society and national service. Her invaluable contribution to women empowerment and social work will always be remembered." The Prime Minister extended his condolences to her family members and admirers, praying for strength during this time of grief. Union minister Nitin Gadkari also expressed grief over her demise. "Pramil maushi dedicated her entire life to patriotism and awakening of woman power. While managing her professional responsibilities, she rose from the branch level to become the Akhil Bhartiya Pramukh Sanchalika of the Samiti. Her work in India and abroad — especially in England, the US, Canada, and Sri Lanka — was remarkable," he said. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed deep sorrow over Pramiltai's demise, stating that she dedicated her entire life to the service of the nation through the Rashtra Sevika Samiti. "Under her leadership, the Samiti's work spread across the country, inspiring countless workers to engage in national service," he said.
