Before joining Emmerdale, he starred in Eric & Ernie and Trying Again, and Thomas' character committed several murders in the soap.
In 2018, he confirmed his exit from the soap after four-and-a-half years of portraying the serial killer, who was going to prison for a very long time.
And in a heartbreaking recent update, it has been revealed that Tom's younger brother took his own life.
Now, one of his brother Matt's close friends is running the Manchester Half Marathon in his memory, as well as to raise money.
The Emmerdale star posted a photo of his younger brother, and wrote a heartbreaking caption.
It read: 'Hi all. I haven't posted anything about this yet for the privacy of my family, but now I feel is the right time to do so.
'In October of last year, as I'm sure many of you will already know, my younger brother, Matt, tragically took his life. It's been the hardest time of mine and my family's lives, and we've really appreciated all the kindness we've received from those of you that knew him.
'Matt was a wonderful, kind, and incredibly funny person. Words cannot describe just how much he'll be missed by so many people.
'One of Matt's close friends @amackie99 is running the Manchester Half Marathon this weekend in memory of my brother, as well as to raise money for Empowerment Charity Lancashire.
EastEnders win TV Bafta for the first time in six years after Emmerdale was forced to withdraw
'They're a charity based here in the northwest set up to support families and friends who've been affected by suicide, as well as providing emotional support for those who need it. They've been there for my family since we lost Matt, as they are for many others across the Lancashire area, offering support to families and to us when we needed it most.'
Tom continued: 'If you can spare anything at all, please consider donating through the link in my bio. The money goes directly to helping other families like mine who are dealing with loss in the most awful of circumstances.
'I'd also like to kindly ask for your understanding and respect for our privacy during this time. While I'm sharing this to support a cause close to my heart, my family and I are still processing our grief, and we appreciate the space to do so in our own way. Your thoughtfulness means everything to us right now.
'If any of you ever feel low, know that it's okay to be so. And if you ever need to talk things through, Samaritans are always there to listen on 116 123.'
In the tribute to his brother, actor Tom posted a string of photos ranging from more recent pictures to throwbacks of them together as kids.
Devastated followers shared their words of support in the comments, as one person wrote: 'Sorry for ur loss, thoughts for all who loved & knew ur brother. What beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing.'
A second person added: 'So so sorry for your loss Tom, my deepest condolences and sending love to you and your family.'
And a third echoed: 'So sorry to hear Tom, can't imagine what you've been going through.'

Robert and Aaron say a sad goodbye in devastating and brutal Emmerdale episode
Well Robron fans, any hopes of a reunion appear to be over. On Monday, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) gave into their feelings and slept together. Ever since Robert returned and crashed Aaron's wedding to John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), he's been determined to show his ex that they're meant to be together. In the bedroom, Aaron and Robert spoke and concluded that they wouldn't do much about their reunion at the moment, because they are both living complicated lives. Robert said that he'd wait for Aaron though, giving fans a tiny glimmer of hope. Waiting patiently was a skill Robert lacked the next day, as he found Aaron and tried to broach the subject of telling John. Aaron felt hesitant and overwhelmed though. He had worked hard to move on from Robert and John served as reminder that he can love someone else. He reached the conclusion that he didn't want to leave him, and really reinforced his decision a while later. After John ranted to Aaron about how exhausted he is by the constant Dingle family drama, Aaron felt guilty and suggested they leave. The couple then updated Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter), revealing that they intend to go away on a holiday and if they like the area, they'll move there permanently. In tonight's episode, John had more on his plate than ever before as he realised Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) had worked out the truth about him. His approach was to be like an animal eyeing up his prey. At the start, John was slow, dropping subtle hints about Mack's fate. It left the popular character on edge, as he couldn't quite work out if John was a few steps ahead of him or not. When Mack mentioned going to London, John told him that was no longer on the cards. It was in this moment Mack's heart dropped – he had to do something to try and save himself. Mack tried to attack John and then ran into the woods. It sparked a game of cat and mouse, as John chased Mackenzie through the trees with a bow and arrow. Meanwhile, Robert and Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) were chatting to Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb). The trio are now working together in farming, determined to not let the Tates succeed with their plan. Talk of money, buying livestock and destroying Kim Tate (Claire King) seemed to wake something up in Robert. Perhaps it was because he was talking about his future and up until fairly recently, he thought that looked like the four walls in a cell. As a result of this, it left Robert pondering over Aaron as well. A while later, John returned home after supposedly killing Mack. He arrived in the pub where Aaron was enjoying a few drinks before they set off. Just before they left, Aaron sat down with Robert. More Trending Robert told Aaron that he made the right choice being with John, because he'd probably just ruin his life again if they got back together. Letting him go, Robert said goodbye to Aaron, later watching his ex say farewell to Chas. As Robert turns his focus to the new partnership with Butlers Farm, Aaron and John will get settled into their (apparent) holiday cottage, with John no doubt feeling relieved that he has successfully managed to cover up two murders. But with the drama continuing in Emmerdale, how long will it be until someone works out it's awfully strange of Mackenzie to leave the village and cut contact with absolutely everyone?
