Before joining Emmerdale, he starred in Eric & Ernie and Trying Again, and Thomas' character committed several murders in the soap.
In 2018, he confirmed his exit from the soap after four-and-a-half years of portraying the serial killer, who was going to prison for a very long time.
And in a heartbreaking recent update, it has been revealed that Tom's younger brother took his own life.
Now, one of his brother Matt's close friends is running the Manchester Half Marathon in his memory, as well as to raise money.
The Emmerdale star posted a photo of his younger brother, and wrote a heartbreaking caption.
It read: 'Hi all. I haven't posted anything about this yet for the privacy of my family, but now I feel is the right time to do so.
'In October of last year, as I'm sure many of you will already know, my younger brother, Matt, tragically took his life. It's been the hardest time of mine and my family's lives, and we've really appreciated all the kindness we've received from those of you that knew him.
'Matt was a wonderful, kind, and incredibly funny person. Words cannot describe just how much he'll be missed by so many people.
'One of Matt's close friends @amackie99 is running the Manchester Half Marathon this weekend in memory of my brother, as well as to raise money for Empowerment Charity Lancashire.
EastEnders win TV Bafta for the first time in six years after Emmerdale was forced to withdraw
'They're a charity based here in the northwest set up to support families and friends who've been affected by suicide, as well as providing emotional support for those who need it. They've been there for my family since we lost Matt, as they are for many others across the Lancashire area, offering support to families and to us when we needed it most.'
Tom continued: 'If you can spare anything at all, please consider donating through the link in my bio. The money goes directly to helping other families like mine who are dealing with loss in the most awful of circumstances.
'I'd also like to kindly ask for your understanding and respect for our privacy during this time. While I'm sharing this to support a cause close to my heart, my family and I are still processing our grief, and we appreciate the space to do so in our own way. Your thoughtfulness means everything to us right now.
'If any of you ever feel low, know that it's okay to be so. And if you ever need to talk things through, Samaritans are always there to listen on 116 123.'
In the tribute to his brother, actor Tom posted a string of photos ranging from more recent pictures to throwbacks of them together as kids.
Devastated followers shared their words of support in the comments, as one person wrote: 'Sorry for ur loss, thoughts for all who loved & knew ur brother. What beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing.'
A second person added: 'So so sorry for your loss Tom, my deepest condolences and sending love to you and your family.'
And a third echoed: 'So sorry to hear Tom, can't imagine what you've been going through.'

Emmerdale star breaks silence on Vinny and Kammy twist and confirms aftermath
Emmerdale's Shebz Miah has opened up about a recent twist in the ITV soap involving his character, Kammy Hadiq. Last week, Kammy and new friend Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) decided to get revenge on a delivery driver. He had arrived outside The Hide and started attempting to flirt with Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham). Vinny told the young man that he's engaged to Gabby, but Romeo responded with a comment that made Vinny feel insecure. Vinny and Kammy got revenge by stealing Romeo's van and dumping it down a road. As they were chased by the police into the woods, Vinny laughed at the thrill over doing something very unlike him. As the two mates hung out afterwards, Vinny got caught up in a moment and tried to kiss Kammy. It left the latter confused, while Vinny tried to say it was just a joke. Opening up about this new storyline, star Shebz Miah has revealed there's a lot more to come between his character and Vinny. 'Kammy realises that there's a bigger issue at hand for Vinny, because he's been going to such extreme lengths to impress for his anniversary with Gabby, but on the other hand, he's misread the signals and has tried to kiss Kammy. So Kammy does support Vinny on this journey that they go on – and it does get quite exciting', the actor told Digital Spy. 'Kammy's so relaxed with it. He's so comfortable with himself that it doesn't affect him. The only thing that does affect him is: 'You are getting married to Gabs. You need to understand the situation'. So Kammy isn't bothered about the kiss, he more feels for Vinny. Because now it's opened up this different perspective on the relationship that Vinny has with people. 'Kammy's trying to support him on his journey. He's trying to understand and make it easier for Vinny and help him and guide him as to what is going on, because he is obviously in a position where he's not entirely sure.' Shebz has confirmed that there isn't an awkward vibe between the two mates, due to the fact Kammy wants to be there for Vinny on this journey. More Trending 'Kammy's so relaxed. Kammy's so confident in his sexuality. It's more that he wants to offer a helping hand, because it's a very tricky situation now that Vinny's in. 'We've got Gabs on one hand, then all the other stuff in Vinny's life and how does it affect that? So it's more about Kammy trying to support him on whatever that is.' Teasing what's ahead for the character, Shebz added: 'Unpredictability – definitely with a lot of the things happening in scenes with Vinny. But also, as we know, Kammy and Sarah were a thing and we start to see an interesting dynamic being played out. 'There's thrills and a lot of cheekiness, definitely. He loves getting up to mischief and trouble.' Killer John twist in early Emmerdale ITVX streaming release as he seeks help
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) isn't coping in Emmerdale and tonight, he tried to get some help. The complex character is struggling as a result of trying to keep a number of secrets hidden. The most prominent one on his mind at the moment is Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) murder. John is attempting to support the likes of Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) as the investigation continues, all while trying to ensure the police don't grow suspicious of him. On top of this, John is also hiding the fact he has orchestrated a variety of dangerous situations involving other residents in the village, just so he could swoop in and save them. In tonight's episode, it became apparent that John hadn't slept very well again. His yawning was picked up on by Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker), who insisted John should have a chat with her over lunch. John told Manpreet that he's terribly stressed at the moment, and is also receiving texts from Tracy all the time. Tracy noted a few days ago that John is the only person who seems to be supporting her at the moment, but she doesn't know her constant messaging is making his guilt increase. Manpreet told John that Tracy should consider speaking to someone, to take the pressure off him a little. She handed him a leaflet for a company called Guardians, which is essentially the Emmerdale equivalent of Samaritans. More Trending At the flat though, John rang the number and a volunteer picked up. He started talking about feeling overwhelmed, and said that he keeps having one particular nightmare. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Paddy horrified by Bear's behaviour in Emmerdale as Mandy steps in
Ahead of his new Emmerdale storyline, Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) starts displaying concerning changes in his behaviour. Bear arrived in the show back in 2019 and was introduced as Paddy's biological dad. Shortly after the two characters met, Bear made his way to Emmerdale. While the character has family around him, he is somewhat of a lonely soul. He had a brief fling with Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) but following her death, love hasn't exactly been on the cards for Bear. In the not too distant future, Bear will suddenly vanish from the village. Producer Laura Shaw explained more: 'He's going to go off screen for a little while and go missing, and when he comes back, what you'll see is a very different Bear in a really different situation and we're all going to be watching saying 'what the hell has happened here?''. The foundations are laid next week, as Paddy (Dominic Brunt) continues to grow frustrated towards his dad. After Bear was gifting an old motorbike to fix up, he is now leaving parts dotted around the house. Paddy tries, but it's clear he is struggling to live with his dad now. More Trending To allow a bit of space, Paddy tells Bear that he can fix up the bike at the garage. Later in the week though, Pads and Mandy (Lisa Riley) are worried when they watch Bear snap and threaten Kammy (Shebz Miah). He's irritated at something regarding his bike and takes it out on the new face, prompting Paddy to step in and put a stop to it. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers?
