South Park girls' softball team flying high with undefeated record
The South Park Lady Eagles' softball team are undefeated this season and are looking to get over the hump after falling one game shy of a WPIAL title last year.
They have a good shot at taking home this year's WPIAL 3A title thanks to pitcher Sydney Sekely, who has more no-hitters than walks so far this season.
With less than two weeks left in the regular season, South Park hasn't lost a game yet and are hungry to make a deep run in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs.
"We're really encouraged to work harder knowing that we were there and almost had it," Sekely said.
The Lady Eagles made it to the WPIAL 3A championship game last year, losing to Mohawk in the title contest.
Spurred by defeat a year ago, this year's team is hungry to come out on top this time around.
Sekely says the team has a new level of resilience that will help take them far.
"Even when we're losing, like our Char-Houston game, being able to fight back as a team and win that game," Sekely said. "It's just really encouraging."
Having an ace like Sekely certainly helps as she's been delivering the heat with 90 strikeouts in the team's first 9 games -- with more no-hitters than walks.
"I honestly didn't even realize that," Sekely said. "Just to know that I have my team behind me and that I'm able to do that for myself."
The regular season is set to wrap up on May 5 and the WPIAL playoffs will begin the following week.

Cole Young, a former standout at North Allegheny High School was called up the MLB by the Seattle Mariners, who drafted Young with the 21st overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Longtime Upper St. Clair coach heading to National High School Football Hall of Fame
Longtime Upper St. Clair football coach Jim Render's accolades are numerous: two PIAA State Championships, five WPIAL Crowns and a career record of 406-141-6, which puts him 25th all-time nationally. Not to mention, he's the winningest football coach in WPIAL history. Advertisement 'I was very fortunate,' Render said. 'I had some great victories, especially here at Upper St. Clair.' Yet earlier this year, he was almost in disbelief when he found out he was set to be inducted into the National High School Football Hall of Fame. 'It wasn't something I was really anticipating happening,' Render said. On June 14, he'll join 32 other inductees in Canton, including Steel Valley's Charlie Batch, Pitt's Louis Riddick and Michael Vick. 'Everybody from Danny Marino to Jerome Bettis was nominated,' Render said, 'and I thought, well, they're probably gonna, it'll be a while till they get to the high school coach level.' Advertisement Render's head coaching career began in Carrolton, Ohio, in 1970. Less than a decade later, after a stop in Uniontown, he found himself at Upper St. Clair. 'I thought, well, I'll go down there to Uniontown for two years, and I'm getting my fanny back to Ohio,' Render said. 'Well, that was 60 years ago, or whatever it is, 40 of which I spent at Upper St. Clair.' All the victories, of course, are memorable. 'If I started naming things, I would probably slate some of the former players, and I don't want to do that,' Render said. 'Let's just say, there was a lot of great thrills.' But it's the journey that's been the most memorable for Render, especially the two years the Panthers won the State Title. Advertisement 'When I think about those things, I remember the journey, and, of course, the final game is the culmination,' Render said 'But, you know, the togetherness and the hard work and all the things that, and you got to have some luck.' His advice to young coaches just beginning their careers? 'Emphasize the fundamentals and don't get away from what made this game great,' Render said. And as he looks back ahead of his induction, the most important thing Render learned comes from all those he met along the way. 'The players make the difference,' Render said. 'You know, coaches get awards and coaches get credit, and I understand that, I guess. Former Aliquippa boys basketball coach's future remains in limbo after vote from school board
The future of the former Aliquippa boys basketball coach, who said he was blindsided when the school board voted against renewing his contract, remains in limbo. On Monday, the Aliquippa school board held an emergency meeting to vote on Nick Lackovich's future. At the meeting, Lackovich faced the board that voted him out. "I love my players and I'm very certain after they've all been polled since last Wednesday, they feel the same way," he said. "This wasn't right," he added. Lackovich said he was blindsided when the school board voted 5-3 against renewing his contract on May 21. During his tenure at Aliquippa across two different stints, Lackovich won eight section titles, four WPIAL titles and two PIAA titles. Lackovich had a record of 185-41. On Monday, the board voted 4-3 to bring Lackovich back. But the former coach needed five votes to get a majority because the meeting started with nine people. The board declined to comment Monday night, but Lackovich's former players had a lot to say after the meeting. "He was a very positive role model to me," said Chucky Humphries, who played for Lackovich in 2016. "That has influenced me throughout my life outside of Aliquippa, how I carried myself in college to get my two degrees, to win championships in college, to play professional basketball. Now I am a father, and now I train and mentor kids. All that is rooted from what coach Nick has done for me." "He was the first one that actually gave me confidence in myself because I didn't have any," said former player Branden Carer. "I always got their back," Lackovich said. "I really hope they would have mine." The board's next regularly scheduled meeting is on June 11.
