Precigen shares jump after US FDA approves first therapy for rare respiratory disease
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the therapy, Papzimeos, to treat adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) — a condition that causes growth of benign tumors in the respiratory tract due to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
A distinguishing aspect of RRP is the tendency for the tumors to return even after removing them through surgical procedures. The disease can be fatal as there is no cure.
The FDA approval was based on an early-to-mid-stage study data that showed 51% of patients required no surgeries in the 12 months after the treatment.
"Randomized trials are not always needed to approve medical products and this approval is proof of that philosophy," said Vinay Prasad, who recently returned to the FDA to oversee vaccine, gene therapy and blood product regulation.
Papzimeos is designed to stimulate an immune response against cells infected with HPV types 6 and 11 — the strains that cause the disease. H.C. Wainwright analysts estimate peak sales of the drug to reach $1.1 billion in 2033.
"We may finally be able to say no more surgery," said Kim McClellan, president of the Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis Foundation. McClellan herself was diagnosed with RRP at the age of five and has since then had more than 250 surgeries.
Precigen estimates about 27,000 adult RRP patients in the U.S. It did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the treatment's pricing.
Simon Best, associate professor of Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, said patients were eagerly awaiting a new treatment.
"There's nothing more frustrating than doing a surgery and then having the patient come back six months later."

The US health and human services (HHS) secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has fended off an attack by conservative firebrand and Donald Trump influencer Laura Loomer by issuing a statement of fealty to the president which calls it 'a flat-out lie' that he is running for the White House in 2028. Kennedy, 71, had been under pressure since Loomer, 32, expressed concern in a recent Politico interview that Stefanie Spear, a top aide of the HHS secretary, was trying to 'utilize her position to try to lay the groundwork for a 2028 RFK presidential run'. Loomer's vigilante pressure campaigns within the White House have cost a number of Trump administration figures their jobs, including customs and border protection official Monte Hawkins as well as Food and Drug Administration vaccine regulator Vinay Prasad. Hawkins had been accused by Loomer of having an 'anti-Trump, pro-open borders and pro-[diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI] bias'. And she had labelled Prasad a 'progressive leftist saboteur' before he was later reinstated by the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles. Loomer told Politico that while she is realistic about neutralizing Kennedy, his deputies were vulnerable. 'I'm not naive enough to think that the president is going to get rid of RFK, but I will say that … there are concerns about some of the staffing decisions over at HHS,' she remarked. A White House official told the outlet that they 'would not be surprised if [Kennedy is] thinking about' running again after his 2024 candidacy prior to aligning himself with Trump. But the official claimed they 'don't think anyone thinks it's a real threat'. Kennedy responded on Friday, saying he would not strive for the presidency in 2028. The Kennedy family scion ran in 2024 for the Democratic party nomination before switching to become an independent candidate – and then cast his lot with Trump. Trump – who in the run-up to his second presidential election victory dismissed Kennedy as a 'radical left liberal' – rewarded him with a cabinet level post as well as his 'make America healthy again' (Maha) mandate. 'The swamp is in full panic mode,' Kennedy Jr said in an X post. 'DC lobby shops are laboring fiercely to drive a wedge between President Trump and me, hoping to thwart our team from dismantling the status quo and advancing [the Maha] agenda.' Kennedy added that the so-called swamp, a Republican term for an entrenched Washington bureaucracy, was 'pushing the flat-out lie that I'm running for president in 2028'. 'Let me be clear: I am not running for president in 2028,' he added. 'My loyalty is to President Trump and the mission we've started.' And he defended Spear. He said 'attacks on my staff, especially Stefanie Spear – a fierce, loyal warrior for Maha who proudly serves in the Trump administration and works every day to advance President Trump's vision for a healthier, stronger America – are proof we're over the target.' Kennedy also offered an overt expression of obeisance to his White House boss and political patron. The crossover of the administration's anti-DEI campaign into healthcare came after an essay in the American Conservative magazine recommended the removal of taskforce members, saying it was embedded 'left-wing ideological orthodoxy'. Among the points it raised was the taskforce's use of term 'pregnant persons' and mention of a 'lasting psychological impact and stigma of enslaved Black women being forced to act as wet nurses'. HHS announced earlier in August it was halting $500m in mRNA vaccine research. And it has also moved to revive a taskforce on childhood vaccine safety, though vaccine injuries are known to be extremely rare. Known as 'Trump's Rasputin' in some circles, Loomer views Kennedy's vaccine skepticism as surging from the left – and not in pure ideological terms. She disputes that he views the issue correctly as a rightwing one, though the two may act in confluence. She has previously labelled Kennedy, in the New York Times, as 'a very problematic person' who 'is running a shadow presidential campaign' from his office. 'There's been some things that have happened,' Loomer told Politico. 'There's been several things that have happened at HHS that are contradictory to the initial promises made.'

Top dermatologist familiar with Brandi Glanville's mysterious says solution is 'so simple'
's mysterious health journey has not only gone viral - it's grabbed the attention of top dermatologists, with one well-known doctor insisting her issue could get worse if not properly treated. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum has claimed that a parasite left her with facial disfigurement, a health issue she's been battling for two years now. She now says her face was left burned and with red patches after she tried using Nair, a hair-removal cream, earlier this month. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a top dermatologist, spoke to the Daily Mail about Brandi's facial issues while promoting his new book, The Beauty Molecule: Introducing Neuroceuticals, the Breakthrough for Ageless Beauty. The Connecticut-based doctor has not treated or examined Brandi, but he has heard of the issue she's facing, and he said, 'Many people never get diagnosed and there's this low grade inflammation. 'You don't see it, you can't feel it, but it's very bad and it could also park itself in the central nervous system, which is not good.' When asked what her mysterious health condition could be, the doctor - who's known for being a pioneer of the anti-inflammatory movement - suggested, 'There's something we call a differential diagnosis. 'But the point is this, that anything that's going to create inflammation in the body is bad for us. It accelerates the aging process.' Dr. Perricone, who spoke to the Daily Mail at Impact Wealth Magazine's Annual Hamptons Celebration and Cover Party on August 10, suggested that the reality star should follow an 'anti-inflammatory diet,' and take 'pharmacologic agents' (certain substances used in medicine to treat diseases) that are 'very mild and very effective.' 'It's got to be taken care of. You just can't let it go... There's no excuse,' he insisted. 'The medications are so easy, they're benign, and of course of a few weeks makes all the difference in the world.' When asked how long it normally takes to fix what appears to be her problem, he responded, 'It doesn't take a long time. It really doesn't. 'You have to be on a proper dose [of pharmacologic agents], but you also follow other things that are important.' 'What's important about this is people have to just understand that [people are] in control, and so we take care of things,' he continued. 'If it's a medical problem, get it done. Anti-inflammatory diet [or] lifestyle is really amazing.' Dr. Perricone is even offering to help the 52-year-old get back to normal, saying he'll 'definitely' reach out to her to help because he believes the solution is 'so simple and there's no reason for this.' Dr. Perricone spoke with the Daily Mail at Impact Wealth Magazine's cover party for Stephen Ross in the Hamptons on August 10 (pictured with the Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp) A doctor who has notably reached out to the former model to assist with her health journey is Dr. Terry Dubrow, the husband of Real Housewives of Orange County's Heather Dubrow and star of E!'s Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind. Dr. Dubrow biopsied parts of her face earlier this year and said that it can take 'weeks' to get the results. They have yet to be disclosed to the public. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, the Newport Beach plastic surgeon said that her diagnosis is 'very complicated' and that there's not an exact answer. 'I can tell you, I think she's on a path with some real experts right now that may help her,' he shared. 'And think that we're going to see, maybe not next week, but relatively soon, we're going to see Brandi Glanville phoenix on us and re-emerge as the gorgeous Brandi Glanville that we all know.' Mix up some aloe vera, cucumber, and black tea put it in the freezer put it in the spray bottle and once it's cold enough spray all day cause I'm in some pain.' This came just days after she made her priorities crystal clear while delivering a wild health update on her mysterious facial disfigurement. Brandi confessed that she couldn't wait to make out 'with a hot boy or girl' as she listed all she was looking forward to once she overcame her health ailment. She blamed her facial disfigurement on the COVID-19 vaccine and a mysterious facial parasite caught in Morocco - which is something her The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip co-star Vicki Gunvalson has also claimed. The RHOC alum recalled during an interview on SiriusXM's Jeff Lewis show last month that the cast 'all got sick' when they went to Morocco to film. She told host Jeff Lewis, 'My stomach's bloated, I don't feel good. I feel tired.' Vicki added: 'Brandi is in so much pain. She's got a very large parasite... It moves. It goes into her mouth. It's bad.' The star revealed she's been taking Ivermectin (medication primarily used to treat certain parasitic infections in humans) 'twice a month' in order to kill the parasite. She's also been doing colonics treatment 'three times a week' and has taken medicines like 'Duralax' and 'Metamucil old lady stuff' to help her gut issues since she claimed the parasites have caused constipation as well.
