If there is to be a revival of Lerner and Loewe's unrepentantly whimsical 1947 musical – and there hasn't been one in London for 35 years – then Regent's Park Open Air Theatre is the place to do it. Known primarily through the 1954 film starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, Brigadoon has enchantment in its bones, demanding its audience buy into the idea of a magical Highland village that emerges from the mist for just one day every 100 years.
That is considerably easier to do with an outdoor venue in which the falling dusk during evening performances is an inbuilt part of the scenery. And if Drew McOnie's effervescent yet punchy production – the first he has directed since taking over the venue this year – relies on admittedly flimsy source material, then so be it. This show is delightful.
There's a hint of Powell and Pressburger's 1946 film A Matter of Life and Death to Rona Munro 's new adaptation, which accentuates the musical's Second World War setting by changing the two American men who find themselves lost in rural Scotland on May Day, 1945, from hunters to shot-down pilots.
Is the idyllic village that suddenly appears to them, with its indefatigably happy residents blissfully unaware of the war (indeed, they have no concept of modernity at all), the hallucination of Tommy and Jeff, who are badly damaged by the horrors they have witnessed on the battlefield? Or have the pilots willed the village into being as an alternative to the prospect of dying on the hills before they can be saved? Either way, Munro subtly reinforces the idea of fantasy as a self-protective mechanism by suggesting the village itself originally 'disappeared' in order to escape the 1745 Jacobite uprising.
Reality and dream co-exist in both uneasy and bewitching ways in this sensitive update, even as it unapologetically rests on Lerner's undeniably barmy book in which the wounded Tommy falls in love with local girl Fiona (a winning Danielle Fiamanya; she shares the role with Georgina Onuorah) whom he is to lose at midnight when the village vanishes, unless he commits himself to living in Brigadoon forever.
McOnie's production retains Brigadoon's old-fashioned MGM musical quality with beautifully choreographed Oklahoma! -style scenes of swirling village women in full skirts and lace-up boots, and men merrily loading wagons with milk churns, images that knowingly lean into the idea of the art form itself as escapism incarnate.
Loewe's score is pure romance, too, with its swooning harmonies led by filigree fiddles, the melodies unashamedly pretty. Basia Binkowska's set, with its sloping wood-clad walls and inclines, bears an unfortunate resemblance to a provincial ecology centre, but the pink and blue hue of the lights and the abundance of gorse and heather provide twinkling compensation, as does powerful use of a couple of pipers, particularly during a desolate funeral scene.
There are some fine performances – notably from Gilli Jones as a puppyish Charlie and Jasmine Jules Andrews as Fiona's spirted sister Jean, whose marriage the villagers are celebrating. There is darkness, too, in the subsumed violence of an en pointe sword dance, and in Danny Nattrass's performance as the embittered Harry, desperately, unhappily in love with Jean. He provides a haunting counterfoil to the utopian happiness the village supposedly embodies. And as that dusk falls, Munro's ending neatly resolves the plot, while leaving a few unsettling questions lingering in the night air.

But now the 67-year-old comedian's new life in the UK with her wife Portia de Rossi, 52, is coming into clearer focus. Late last month, DeGeneres surprised the audience at the Cheltenham Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, England, with an unplanned Q&A session, according to Us Weekly. Although she painted a picture of an idyllic life in the countryside, DeGeneres also admitted she was feeling 'bored' after being 'pushed out' of the spotlight in the wake of bullying controversies on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ultimately led to the firing of three top producers on the series, before it came to an end in May 2022. She spoke about her new home in the Cotswolds, the largely rural area is South West England — about an hour and a half from London by train — where she and de Rossi initially bought a home, Kitesbridge Farm, in 2024 for around $20 million. The couple later put it on the market for $30 million and moved into a 10,000-square-foot home nearby named Hiaven, which they purchased for $26 million. 'It's absolutely beautiful,' DeGeneres reportedly said of the UK, adding, 'Everything here is better.' She continued, adding, 'Everything you see is charming, and it's just a simpler way of life.' Since moving across the pond, DeGeneres has reportedly fallen in love with the rural nature of the Cotswolds, and she regularly documents herself riding her lawnmower and feeding her chickens and sheep on Instagram. 'It's a different lifestyle for her,' a source told Us Weekly. They added that the former talk show host was able to be 'chill' and at ease in her adopted home. The insider added that people close to the Finding Nemo voice actor 'have never seen her happier.' But DeGeneres, who recently sparked rumors that she and de Rossi might move back to the US, also indicated that she may be itching to get back on stage and in front of a camera. Last month, Deadline reported that the comedian had signed with the high-profile talent agency WME after seemingly abandoning her Hollywood prospects last year when her longtime CAA agent Eddy Yablans left that agency in December, though he only transitioned to working as her manager. DeGeneres said goodbye to the US two years after her eponymous talk show came to an end, and four years after an investigation into sexual harassment and misconduct claims on the show ended with three senior producers being fired. The stand-up star, who had been haunted by anonymous claims of behind-the-scenes bullying for years before the accusations erupted into public view, later delivered a public apology on camera when her show returned after the investigation in September 2020. 'The investigation into her show was a major blow,' they alleged, and a second insider claimed that 'Ellen feels very burned by how the world turned on her.' During her Q&A in Cheltenham, DeGeneres said she misses 'a lot' of her experiences from hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and she admitted she 'would love to do that again,' according to the BBC. 'I do like my chickens here, but I am a little bit bored,' she told the English broadcaster Richard Bacon during the on-stage conversation. Both women were now without any significant work, as an insider noted that ' Portia quit acting a long time ago, so she wasn't leaving her career. She was already scaling back.' The couple also regularly drop by the exclusive members-only club Soho Farmhouse when they're looking for a more upscale experience. Although DeGeneres and de Rossi have taken to their new life in the UK, it has still been a cultural shock in some ways. Things aren't as 'luxurious' as they were for the two in Southern California,' the insider noted, adding that they now have to do things that were once handled by household staff, including placing their garbage bins at the end of their long driveway. During her Q&A, DeGeneres admitted that The winter is tough,' though she said she 'still enjoyed it because we're not used to seasons in California.' They also allegedly suffered an embarrassing culture clash when their penchant for large vehicles — in this case their Land Rovers, a Discovery and a vintage Defender — were too wide and heavy to drive over the bridge between their home and town. That forced them to either take the 'long way around to the village — a three-mile trip,' or to just walk into town, which the source admitted was 'probably quicker.' But taking the scenic route or turning their trips into town into intimate strolls may be part of how the couple are learning to relax since moving to the UK. 'There's less work stress and more shared activities,' the source said. 'It's a calmer Ellen, so she's easier to be around. And Portia is really enjoying it.' During her chat with audience members in Cheltenham, DeGeneres reportedly said she was 'always happiest on stage,' adding that it is 'the best feeling,' so she may be itching to find a way back to performing for audiences. She even admitted that she would 'love' to host another talk show in the UK, she admitted that the proliferation of phones and the decreased attention spans of audiences might make such an idea impossible. But the first insider said that DeGeneres is still 'embracing this reinvention.' 'She's left the Hollywood drama behind for a more peaceful life,' they said.

Review, In Flight - buckle up for a thrilling ride

**** BETWEEN Idris Elba in Hijack, paranoia-driven Red Eye and now this new thriller from Channel 4, it is all kicking off in the skies. It is enough to make you glad the schools are going back and the holiday season in Scotland is over. No, not really, but let's go with that anyway. Created and written by Mike Walden (Marcella) and Adam Randall (Slow Horses), the six-part In Flight has a smashing pedigree and is just the kind of muscular thriller that will power you through the week - familiar but not predictable, twisty but not impenetrable. Plus, it has the good fortune to have Katherine Kelly in the lead role. The actor formerly known as Becky the barmaid from Coronation Street, among many other roles, plays Jo Conran, senior cabin crew and mother to Sonny, 19. Sonny has gone off to Sofia for a holiday and to try living with his dad for a while. But a fight in a bar leads to Sonny being charged with murder and it is mum who gets the call from the distraught teenager begging to come home. Jo goes into can-do mode, throwing herself into her son's defence and promising to get him out of Bulgaria. But with costs spiralling, money and hope are running out fast. Read More: With perfect timing, along comes a stranger with an offer that feels impossible to refuse. Unless Jo brings three kilos of heroin into the country from Istanbul, her son won't make it out of jail alive. 'It's one of your usual routes, so you won't be suspected and you won't be stopped,' she is told. It is a simple enough set-up and one Jo manages to pull off, albeit shaking with nerves as she goes through security. But with Sonny's appeal coming up it's not a case of one and done. She's now the gang's prize asset - 'People look at you and they don't see a drug mule' - and the next job is Bangkok. In Flight is a hostage drama and drug thriller rolled into one, which would be chewy enough, but Walden and Randall squeeze more out of the story. For all that Jo seems terrified, she is also coolly transactional with her 'handler', looking for any little thing that will give her an edge over him. Kelly is terrific as the mum on the edge of a breakdown. Ditto Harry Cadby as her terrified son, pathetically grateful now that he is not being beaten up every day, but not knowing why. The last time most of us saw Kelly, she was part of the UK-wide acting ensemble in Mr Bates vs the Post Office. Closer to home, she was also in The Field of Blood, the 2011-13 adaptation of Denise Mina's novel. Fun fact: the tale of a cub reporter, Paddy Meehan (Jayd Johnson) was filmed in The Herald's old offices in Albion Street. Alas, none of us was plucked out of the subbing pool for stardom.
