S. Korea beat Kuwait 4-0 to keep unbeaten record
The win meant Korea Republic ended their campaign unbeaten with 22 points, with Kuwait finishing at the foot of the table.
Having already secured their 11th consecutive and 12th overall Fifa World Cup appearance, Korea Republic dominated the proceedings but Lee Han-beom, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Bae Jun-ho attempts fell off target.
Kuwait remained calm under pressure as Korea Republic maintained the intensity with Oh seeing his attempt from distance blocked, while Bae brought the best out Kuwait custodian Sulaiman Abdulghafoor following Lee Kang-in's set-up in the 19th minute.
Korea Republic finally broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after Hwang In-beom's corner bounced off Kuwait captain Fahad Al Hajeri before sailing past keeper Abdulghafoor.
The Al Arabi SC custodian had to be on his toes moments later to deny Won Du-jae's close range header before foiling Lee's dangerous cross into the area.
Kuwait, whose hopes of advancing to the playoffs were dashed following a 2-0 defeat to Palestine last Thursday, struggled to settle in the second half as Korea Republic turned up the intensity with Lee again threatening from outside the box.
The East Asian side doubled their tally in the 50th minute after Bae played a through ball for Lee, who finished brilliantly past Abdulghafoor for his 11th goal for Korea Republic.
The momentum carried Korea Republic further in front three minutes later after Bae Jun-ho nodded down Hwang In-beom's deep ball into the box for Oh Hyeon-gyu to finish on the turn.
Abdulghafoor denied Won's headed attempt from close range in the 72nd minute before Kim Ju-sung saw his header from inside the six-yard-box denied by the bar.
But there was no denying Korea Republic as they went 4-0 up moments later after Kuwait failed to clear the ball with Lee Jae-Sung striking home a low shot which took a deflection before settling in the back of the net to seal the emphatic victory. — AFC

Different situations for La Liga's top-four clubs in new season
MADRID: With La Liga due to kick off the 2025-26 season in less than a week, last year's top four teams are all at slightly different points in their respective preparations. Domestic and European competitions hardly gave any respite ahead of next summer's FIFA World Cup finals. Reigning La Liga and Copa del Rey champion FC Barcelona has made two signings in striker Marcus Rashford and goalkeeper Joan Garcia, but has so far not been able to register either that pair or Gerard Martin and Wojciech Szczesny in its first-team squad due to Spain's strict financial fair play regulations. That leaves Inaki Pena as the only first team goalkeeper currently available, and has forced the team to take the shock decision to allow central defender Inigo Martinez to join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr on a free transfer to free up salary under the wage ceiling. The club has also pressured Marc-Andre ter Stegen to sign a medical report to say he will be out of action for five months, which will allow the club to use 80 percent of his salary to register Rashford and company. Barca had a successful pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea that showed once again how important young winger Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and midfielder Pedri are, and if none of them get injured in what promises to be another grueling campaign, Barca will start as favorite to retain the title. Real Madrid has a new coach in Xabi Alonso and new signings in defenders Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Carreras, with Huijsen looking very impressive in the summer's Club World Cup. The big problem for Alonso is a lack of preparation time after playing in the United States until mid-July, with his players only reporting back for training on August 4, just two weeks before starting the season at home to Osasuna. Alonso will also be without Jude Bellingham for the opening weeks after he had an operation on a long-standing shoulder injury, and the doubt is whether Alonso will play with a flat back four or three central defenders and wingbacks, with the latter likely to suit Alexander-Arnold. The coach will also probably want to see more pressing high up the field from Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius in attack, but if the pair gel, then Real Madrid will be title candidates. Atletico Madrid has also spent heavily this summer, bringing in midfielders Johnny Cardoso and Thiago Almada, winger Alex Baena and defenders Matteo Ruggeri and David Hancko as Diego Simeone's side looks to improve on last season's third place. The club has retained strikers Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez, who scored 37 La Liga goals between them last season, and if Simeone shows ambition, rather than allowing his defensive instincts to rule, Atletico certainly has the talent to challenge, although Simeone's men also go into the new season slightly short of preparation after the Club World Cup. Athletic Bilbao ended last season in fourth place under coach Ernesto Valverde. Athletic's big win of the summer was keeping star player Nico Williams amid interest from Barcelona, while attacking midfielder Robert Navarro and full-back Jesus Areso look to be good additions to the squad. Athletic's pre-season was complicated by a suspension for defender Yeray Alvarez after the two-time cancer survivor tested positive for a product to prevent hair loss, robbing Valverde of a key player, while another defender Unai Egiluz suffered a season-ending knee injury in a friendly. Athletic's season could depend to an extent on whether it is successful in its efforts to tempt Spain international defender Aymeric Laporte back to the club, and if they do, they will be tough to beat, especially in the passionate San Mames Stadium.

Queiroz faces tough test with Oman's WC hopes on the line
Muscat – Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz will lead Oman in the decisive fourth round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the national team aiming for its first-ever appearance in the tournament. Oman will compete in Group A alongside Qatar and the UAE. The first match is scheduled for October 8 against hosts Qatar in Doha, followed by a face-off with the UAE at the same venue. Queiroz, 71, has coached Portugal, Colombia, Iran and South Africa, in addition to stints with Real Madrid and as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. He led Iran to two World Cups and Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2021. Sports analyst Hilal bin Hamad al Mukhaini described Queiroz as a 'big name in the world of coaching' with 'extensive and diverse experience with international teams'. He told ONA the appointment was an important step but stressed it must be backed by 'hard work and sufficient time for the coach to implement his technical ideas'. Former Oman captain Fawzi Bashir said the appointment was a 'successful decision' by Oman Football Association. 'He is no stranger to the region, having worked with Gulf clubs and national teams. This gives him an advantage in understanding the nature of the Gulf player,' he said. Former Oman captain Fawzi Bashir Bashir added that the qualifying campaign would require 'integrated work from the technical, administrative and medical staff, as well as from the fans', with the greatest responsibility on the players. Sports journalist Walid bin Zaher al Abri said the change was needed after recent below-par performances, including a 3-0 defeat to Kyrgyzstan. 'When we talk about Queiroz, we're talking about a coach with a leadership personality and extensive experience.' Abri explained that Queiroz has the ability to bring a technical shift in the national team, but faces significant challenges, particularly in familiarising himself with the players. 'This is complicated by the distinct environment of the Omani team compared to his previous assignments with Iran, Colombia and Egypt – teams with strong leagues and many players active in Europe.' Sports analyst Hilal bin Hamad al Mukhaini He added that the Omani league is comparatively underdeveloped and the national team has an older average age, both of which present further challenges for Queiroz to overcome. According to football coach Nasser bin Mohammed al Hajri, the change came with 'some risk' but was necessary. 'In my opinion, he is the most suitable. He has sufficient technical experience and understands the game in the Gulf region,' he said, add-ing that assistant coach Hamad al Azani's knowledge of the players would help bridge Queiroz's lack of direct familiarity.
