Cyriel Dessers minimum Rangers transfer fee revealed as AEK set to spend big on statement signing

The Greeks mean business after takeover by Marios Iliopoulos but new Ibrox regime determined to turn a profit on Dessers Greek Giants AEK are preparing to push the boat out to land Rangers hitman Cyriel Dessers. The enigmatic Ibrox striker has blasted 51 goals in two years in Glasgow but remains a divisive figure among the Light Blue legions. ‌ Now Record Sport understands AEK are keen to offer him a fresh start in the Greek capital - and are willing to spend big. ‌ The Yellow and Blacks were taken over by shipping magnate Marios Iliopoulos last year and he's determined to make a statement signing this summer. They've identified Gers' 30-year-old Nigeria international as the man they want to spearhead their big push to recapture the Super League title they last won in 2023. But they will likely have to start the bidding at the £5million mark as Rangers' new American owners prepare to dig their heels in. The previous Ibrox regime spent £4.5million when they signed the former Feyenoord forward from Italian outfit Cremonese in 2023 and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell believes his record of scoring a goal-every-other game in Glasgow justifies a return on that investment. Dessers has been the subject of interest in recent windows, with his agent Stijn Franics revealing earlier this year that he had as many as TEN clubs sniffing about his signature in January. None could come up with the cash Gers were looking for and he stayed on to finish the campaign in Glasgow only one shy of the 30 mark. ‌ Selling Dessers would free up some fresh funds for new boss Russell Martin to spend. Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers have vowed to inject £20m of fresh funds into the Ibrox coffers, with CEO Patrick Stewart promising the new gaffer a 'decent amount' would be ring fenced for recruitment purposes. ‌ But Martin has been told he will have to move players on if he wants to raise additional funds for what is likely to be a considerable rebuild this summer. Record Sport broke the news last week that Leicester City defender Conor Coady could be the first new face in bolster Gers' backline. Ib Rox chiefs have already made contact with the Foxes as they look to kick off the Martin revolution with the experienced ex-England's capture. We also revealed how Rangers are in the hunt for £4 million-rated Israeli striker Dor Turgeman, who could be the man to replace Dessers. Talks with his club Maccabi Tel Aviv are on going as Rangers look to land the 21-year-old hit-man. Young Wales international ruled out of World Championship The 20-year-old was one of the heroes of the stirring victory over Grand Slam-chasing England back in March Harry Rees-Weldon of Wales scores the crucial try (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) Young Dragons winger Harry Rees-Weldon has been ruled out of Wales U20s' World Championship campaign after suffering an injury in training. The 20-year-old starred in the Six Nations earlier this year, crossing for an eye-catching try in the stirring upset of Grand Slam-chasing England at the Cardiff Arms Park. Since then, Rees-Weldon has gone on to make his senior debut for the Men of Gwent, scoring on his debut against the Ospreys. ‌ He then followed that up with back-to-back starts in South Africa against the Stormers and Bulls. ‌ However, a leg injury suffered in training means he will now miss the tournament in Italy. 'Harry is out after an injury in training,' Wales head coach Richard Whiffin told the South Wales Argus. 'It's such a shame because he was brilliant at the back end of the Six Nations. Article continues below 'He then showed that he can step up to the next level with the Dragons in the United Rugby Championship but sadly he won't make the plane. 'Harry is in rehab already and now it's up to others to step up in what is a strong area for us, with Tom Bowen to come back into the mix. One guy's misfortune is another's opportunity.' The injury to Rees-Weldon is understood to not be serious, with the speedster targeting a pre-season return. ‌ Whiffin had initially planned to name his squad for the tournament prior to Friday's second warm-up match against Italy. However, he will now wait until after that friendly at the Arms Park as he weighs up a number of injury doubts. His side started their preparations last week with a warm-up match against England at Pontypool Park. Article continues below Despite leading 14-7 at half-time, five tries in the final 13 minutes saw Wales collapse to a 47-14 defeat. Wales begin their World Rugby U20s Championship campaign against Argentina on June 29. Skills coach Neil Jenkins, who will not travel to Japan with the senior national team this summer, has been working with the U20s as they continue to build towards the tournament in Italy.

Orla Prendergast takes centre stage to help Dragons roar home over Scorchers

The Irish international hit 13 boundaries in her 116, sharing a third wicket stand of 119 with Amy Hunter after Ava Canning had struck twice in the opening over. Hunter hit eight fours in a stylish 62, while Arlene Kelly was also in the runs, making 41 as she and Prendergast added a further 107 for the fourth wicket. Cara Murray chipped in with an even-time 26 in a final total of 284 for seven. Gaby Lewis was clearly the leading threat to the Dragons' hopes, with the Ireland captain racing to 91 out of the first 120 scored before she fell to Bready all-rounder Alana Dalzell, who claimed four wickets in a fine display of swing bowling. Sophie MacMahon hit a valiant 42, but the result was never in doubt. Meanwhile, in the NCU Women's Premiership, Holywood beat Waringstown in the top-of-the-table clash. The Lawn side were in early trouble with star players Amy Caulfield and Charlotte Lyons both back in the pavilion, but they were steadied by a third wicket partnership of 78 between Naomi Matthews, who made an unbeaten 40, and Samantha Bond (28). Tamsin Hope took three wickets, and a final total of 103 for five looked below par. That indeed proved to be the case as Lara Maritz hit six fours in a top score of 46, sharing an opening stand of 65 with Eva Cupitt (20), while Madison Landsman (22 not out) was also in the runs in an eight-wicket win. CSNI are in third place after a 50-run (DLS) win over Lisburn. Skipper Jemma Gillan was once again in the runs, hitting six boundaries in her 43-ball 55. She and Sarah Rountree (28) put on 83 for the second wicket that saw the Stormont side post 148 for three. Lisburn's reply never really got going despite 24 for Amelia Hughes. They were struggling on 47 for six in the 13th over when rain brought a premature end to proceedings. CSNI's bowling unit did well with two wickets apiece for Vanessa Minford, Eva Wilson and Emily Carville. The bowlers were also on top at North Down where Evey Keenan claimed five wickets for just eight runs as Muckamore were bowled out for 60. Kiara Fisher (31) and Gracie Keenan (26) shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 62 to seal a comprehensive nine-wicket win.
