Orla Prendergast takes centre stage to help Dragons roar home over Scorchers

The Irish international hit 13 boundaries in her 116, sharing a third wicket stand of 119 with Amy Hunter after Ava Canning had struck twice in the opening over.
Hunter hit eight fours in a stylish 62, while Arlene Kelly was also in the runs, making 41 as she and Prendergast added a further 107 for the fourth wicket.
Cara Murray chipped in with an even-time 26 in a final total of 284 for seven.
Gaby Lewis was clearly the leading threat to the Dragons' hopes, with the Ireland captain racing to 91 out of the first 120 scored before she fell to Bready all-rounder Alana Dalzell, who claimed four wickets in a fine display of swing bowling.
Sophie MacMahon hit a valiant 42, but the result was never in doubt.
Meanwhile, in the NCU Women's Premiership, Holywood beat Waringstown in the top-of-the-table clash.
The Lawn side were in early trouble with star players Amy Caulfield and Charlotte Lyons both back in the pavilion, but they were steadied by a third wicket partnership of 78 between Naomi Matthews, who made an unbeaten 40, and Samantha Bond (28). Tamsin Hope took three wickets, and a final total of 103 for five looked below par.
That indeed proved to be the case as Lara Maritz hit six fours in a top score of 46, sharing an opening stand of 65 with Eva Cupitt (20), while Madison Landsman (22 not out) was also in the runs in an eight-wicket win.
CSNI are in third place after a 50-run (DLS) win over Lisburn. Skipper Jemma Gillan was once again in the runs, hitting six boundaries in her 43-ball 55.
She and Sarah Rountree (28) put on 83 for the second wicket that saw the Stormont side post 148 for three.
Lisburn's reply never really got going despite 24 for Amelia Hughes. They were struggling on 47 for six in the 13th over when rain brought a premature end to proceedings.
CSNI's bowling unit did well with two wickets apiece for Vanessa Minford, Eva Wilson and Emily Carville.
The bowlers were also on top at North Down where Evey Keenan claimed five wickets for just eight runs as Muckamore were bowled out for 60.
Kiara Fisher (31) and Gracie Keenan (26) shared an unbroken second wicket stand of 62 to seal a comprehensive nine-wicket win.

Celtic secure long-term deal for 'major asset' - but exit still could be on cards

Brendan Rodgers believes Celtic have a 'major asset' on their hands in Johnny Kenny after handing the Irish striker a long-term contract extension at Parkhead. Kenny, 22, has signed a deal that ties him to Celtic until 2029 after being a regular feature in Rodgers' team during pre-season and coming off the bench in the opening William Hill Premiership win over St Mirren. He netted his first goal for the club in May in a 5-1 win at Aberdeen and scored a penalty in the Scottish Cup shoot-out defeat against the same opposition at Hampden. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined on a five-year deal from Sligo Rovers in January 2022 and has had loan spells with Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers, where he netted 25 goals last year. Johnny Kenny has agreed a new deal with Celtic. | SNS Group Rodgers said of the contract extension: 'It's good news for Johnny and the club. He's a young player that was signed a few years ago, went away, got experience, has come back and we can really see the difference in his development since he came back in January. 'So we think he's still got a load more development to go. He's quick, he's hungry and we think in the future he can be a really good asset for the club.' Kenny earlier revealed how important his manager's backing was. 'All I wanted to do was commit my future to this club and I'm delighted it's done now,' he told Celtic TV. 'I feel really proud. I spoke to the manager at the start of the summer and it was a case of tying it all together. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Kenny sets out his Celtic aims 'I like to think that I can score goals and the manager believes in me too, so that helps when I'm in and around the box, knowing that the manager backs me. I want to achieve everything possible at this club. I want to play Champions League football, win every trophy available and score goals. That's my aim.' Kenny is currently competing with the likes of Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah and Shin Yamada for first-team action but there appears to be a possibility he will go out on loan again if Rodgers gets the attacking options he is looking for in the transfer market. Rodgers said: 'At this very moment he's here and a part of our squad, so I think you look through to the end of the month and obviously there's still work across the squad to do. But he's had a really good pre-season, worked very hard, this will give him confidence and give him that feeling that he's wanted at the club.

Celtic striker commits future to club on long-term contract

The Irish striker has agreed terms on a new deal to run until 2029. Kenny first joined Celtic in 2022 from Sligo Rovers. He signed a five-year deal, which has now been extended by a further two years. The forward played for Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers on loan but has featured for the Celtic first-team in the second half of last season and the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign. 'I'm delighted. All I wanted to do was commit my future to this club and I'm delighted it's done now. 'I feel really proud. I spoke to the manager at the start of the summer and it was a case of tying it all together. 'It's a proud moment and I have to thank the club for giving me this opportunity. I just want to repay them on the pitch over the next few years. 'I can only say thank you to everyone, my family, friends and the supporters for the support they've given me. Let's hope for more years of success at this football club.' Brendan Rodgers said: 'I am really pleased that we have agreed this new contract with Johnny. He is a young player who I believe can have a big future with Celtic. 'He loves the club and is really hungry and focused on doing well for us, developing further and making an important contribution to the squad, so we look forward to working with him moving forward.'

Four wagers for York and Ascot

Ascot's Shergar Cup meeting tomorrow is a fun event but, in terms of good bets, it is York's Ebor meeting later this month that excites me more. The four-day event starts in less than two weeks and, unless there is a drastic change in the weather, racing looks likely to take place on fast ground. The most likely winner of the Sky Bet Ebor, Europe's richest flat handicap, on 23 August is Hipop De Loire, who was desperately unlucky in running in this race a year ago when fifth to another Irish raider Magical Zoe. Willie Mullins's eight-year-old gelding showed he is in good form when winning easily over hurdles at Galway late last month. However, he is now a top-priced 7-2 and that's too short for a race this competitive. Instead, I am happy to go in double-handed at big prices. PLAGE DE HAVRE destroyed a decent field when landing the bet365 Old Newton Cup Handicap at Haydock early last month. Although he is up 9lb in the official ratings for that win, his trainer Andrew Balding clearly thinks he is a really top horse, describing him after his Haydock win 'as good as he looks'. He could be running in group races by next year. Back him 1 point each way at 16-1 with bet365, paying four places. At a bigger price I also fancy the chances of MAJESTIC WARRIOR from Newmarket handler James Tate's yard. This five-year-old is a lightly-raced improver, but clearly fragile, having won three of his only four starts. His half-brother, Fujaira Prince, won the Ebor in 2020 and Majestic Warrior is being targeted at this prize. Back Majestic Warrior 1 point each way at 25-1 with Sky Bet, because the race sponsor is already paying five places. That price is widely available with other bookies, paying four places. He is not certain to make the cut for the race but it is very likely he will do so. Another competitive race at York is the Clipper Handicap on Thursday 21 August. Ed Bethell loves to target the big races at his local track and I hope that OLD COCK can land this prize. He is already a course and distance winner having landed the Oakmere Homes Hambleton Handicap back in May when well supported into 9-2. He returned to York last month for the John Smith's Racing Handicap when he was only fourth to Remmooz. However, that race was not run to suit him as he was held up off a slow pace after a sluggish start. This four-year-old gelding is better than he showed that day and the Clipper Handicap will be much more his cup of tea in a big field. Back him 1 point each way at 25-1 with Sky Bet, Paddy Power or Betfair, all paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. The Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot tomorrow is always one to enjoy but it is difficult from a betting perspective. Most riders have never ridden their mounts before and some foreign-based jockeys have never ridden at the track before. I was quite prepared not to have any bets at the meeting but it seems churlish not to have a dabble on one horse that I like. The most interesting race at Ascot is the last over a mile, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup (4.30 p.m). I am loath to desert Ebt's Guard after his big run for this blog when second in the Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood a week ago, having been put up each way at 25-1. However, he makes a quick reappearance off a high mark and so marginal preference is for ARISAIG who was pulled out of the Golden Mile on the day of the race after the torrential rain the previous day. Charlie Johnston's four-year-old filly is very much a good-ground horse and she will have her conditions tomorrow. Back her 1 point each at 9-1 with Ladbrokes or Coral, both paying three places. Last weekend went well with winners at 7-1 and 11-2 and a runner up at 25-1 from five tips. I am pleased to say that this means the profit for this flat season on all Penworthy tips is now well over 100 points to level stakes. This good run of winning wagers will not go on forever but it's enjoyable – and good for the bank balance – while it lasts. Pending: 1 point each way Arisaig at 9-1 for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile, paying 1/5 odds, 3 places. 1 point each way Old Cock at 25-1 for theClipper Handicap, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 1 point each way Plage De Havre at 16-1 for the Ebor Handicap, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 1 point each way Majestic Warrior at 25-1 for the Ebor Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 5 places. Last weekend: + 16.25 points 1 point each way Kyle of Lochalsh at 11-2 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 4 places, BOG. 1st. + 6.6 points. 1 point each way Vino Victrix at 20-1 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5odds, 4 places BOG. Unplaced. – 2 points. 1 point each way Ebt's Guard at 25-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 2nd. + 5.25 points. 1 point each way Dutch Decoy at 8-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/5 odds, 5 places, BOG. Unplaced. – 2 points. 1 point each way Waardah at 7-1 for the Lillie Langtry, paying 1/5 odds, 3 places. 1st. + 8.4 points. 2025 flat season running total: + 109.43 points. 2024-5 jump season: – 47.61 points on all tips. 2024 flat season: + 41.4 points on all tips. 2023-4 jump season: + 42.01 points on all tips. 2023 flat season: – 48.22 points on all tips. 2022-3 jump season: + 54.3 points on all tips.
