Four wagers for York and Ascot

Four wagers for York and Ascot

Spectator08-08-2025
Ascot's Shergar Cup meeting tomorrow is a fun event but, in terms of good bets, it is York's Ebor meeting later this month that excites me more. The four-day event starts in less than two weeks and, unless there is a drastic change in the weather, racing looks likely to take place on fast ground.
The most likely winner of the Sky Bet Ebor, Europe's richest flat handicap, on 23 August is Hipop De Loire, who was desperately unlucky in running in this race a year ago when fifth to another Irish raider Magical Zoe. Willie Mullins's eight-year-old gelding showed he is in good form when winning easily over hurdles at Galway late last month. However, he is now a top-priced 7-2 and that's too short for a race this competitive.
Instead, I am happy to go in double-handed at big prices. PLAGE DE HAVRE destroyed a decent field when landing the bet365 Old Newton Cup Handicap at Haydock early last month. Although he is up 9lb in the official ratings for that win, his trainer Andrew Balding clearly thinks he is a really top horse, describing him after his Haydock win 'as good as he looks'. He could be running in group races by next year. Back him 1 point each way at 16-1 with bet365, paying four places.
At a bigger price I also fancy the chances of MAJESTIC WARRIOR from Newmarket handler James Tate's yard. This five-year-old is a lightly-raced improver, but clearly fragile, having won three of his only four starts. His half-brother, Fujaira Prince, won the Ebor in 2020 and Majestic Warrior is being targeted at this prize.
Back Majestic Warrior 1 point each way at 25-1 with Sky Bet, because the race sponsor is already paying five places. That price is widely available with other bookies, paying four places. He is not certain to make the cut for the race but it is very likely he will do so.
Another competitive race at York is the Clipper Handicap on Thursday 21 August. Ed Bethell loves to target the big races at his local track and I hope that OLD COCK can land this prize. He is already a course and distance winner having landed the Oakmere Homes Hambleton Handicap back in May when well supported into 9-2.
He returned to York last month for the John Smith's Racing Handicap when he was only fourth to Remmooz. However, that race was not run to suit him as he was held up off a slow pace after a sluggish start. This four-year-old gelding is better than he showed that day and the Clipper Handicap will be much more his cup of tea in a big field. Back him 1 point each way at 25-1 with Sky Bet, Paddy Power or Betfair, all paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
The Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot tomorrow is always one to enjoy but it is difficult from a betting perspective. Most riders have never ridden their mounts before and some foreign-based jockeys have never ridden at the track before. I was quite prepared not to have any bets at the meeting but it seems churlish not to have a dabble on one horse that I like.
The most interesting race at Ascot is the last over a mile, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup (4.30 p.m). I am loath to desert Ebt's Guard after his big run for this blog when second in the Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood a week ago, having been put up each way at 25-1.
However, he makes a quick reappearance off a high mark and so marginal preference is for ARISAIG who was pulled out of the Golden Mile on the day of the race after the torrential rain the previous day. Charlie Johnston's four-year-old filly is very much a good-ground horse and she will have her conditions tomorrow. Back her 1 point each at 9-1 with Ladbrokes or Coral, both paying three places.
Last weekend went well with winners at 7-1 and 11-2 and a runner up at 25-1 from five tips. I am pleased to say that this means the profit for this flat season on all Penworthy tips is now well over 100 points to level stakes. This good run of winning wagers will not go on forever but it's enjoyable – and good for the bank balance – while it lasts.
Pending:
1 point each way Arisaig at 9-1 for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile, paying 1/5 odds, 3 places.
1 point each way Old Cock at 25-1 for theClipper Handicap, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Plage De Havre at 16-1 for the Ebor Handicap, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Majestic Warrior at 25-1 for the Ebor Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 5 places.
Last weekend: + 16.25 points
1 point each way Kyle of Lochalsh at 11-2 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 4 places, BOG. 1st. + 6.6 points.
1 point each way Vino Victrix at 20-1 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5odds, 4 places BOG. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Ebt's Guard at 25-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 2nd. + 5.25 points.
1 point each way Dutch Decoy at 8-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/5 odds, 5 places, BOG. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Waardah at 7-1 for the Lillie Langtry, paying 1/5 odds, 3 places. 1st. + 8.4 points.
2025 flat season running total: + 109.43 points.
2024-5 jump season: – 47.61 points on all tips.
2024 flat season: + 41.4 points on all tips.
2023-4 jump season: + 42.01 points on all tips.
2023 flat season: – 48.22 points on all tips.
2022-3 jump season: + 54.3 points on all tips.

Brighton vs Fulham predictions: Premier League tips and odds

Our expert has two tips for the Premier League match between Brighton and Fulham at the Amex Stadium on Saturday (kick-off, 3pm), including a long shot for the first goalscorer. Brighton vs Fulham tips Odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Already a Sky Bet member? Stubborn Fulham can claim a point Brighton edged the most recent meeting between the sides at the Amex in March, when they needed a 98th-minute penalty from Joao Pedro to secure a 2-1 victory. The Brazil striker has since moved to Chelsea and the Seagulls don't have a ready-made replacement. Fabian Hurzeler's team, who finished eighth last term, have still done some decent-looking business in the transfer market and seem poised for another good campaign. But Fulham, 11th in 2024-25, are likely to prove stubborn rivals again. The visitors have had an extremely quiet transfer window, but with that comes continuity and Marco Silva's men are an organised outfit who will be well drilled for this season opener. It's hard to see either side giving away many chances and the draw is temptingly priced. Set-pieces might prove key Brighton look set to become a greater force from dead-ball situations this season. They have a new set-piece coach in Yannick Euvrard, who assisted Belgium at Euro 2021 and the 2022 World Cup. And new signing Maxim de Cuyper, an attacking left full-back, delivers dangerous free-kicks and corners. If, as expected, this is a cagey game, set-pieces could be key and it looks worth taking a punt on Jan Paul van Hecke at big odds to score first. The centre back has scored only once for Brighton – but that goal came in the home fixture against Fulham last term with a smart back-post header from a free-kick. He was subsequently named the club's player of the season and might be a threat in the air with improved service this campaign. Brighton vs Fulham odds

Man Utd vs Arsenal prediction, team news & bet builder tips

Both teams to score and Manchester United to win - 6/1 Bet365 Bryan Mbuemo to score - 17/5 BetVictor Manchester United kick off their Premier League season on Sunday, taking on Arsenal in the late kick-off, as they look to make a huge improvement on last season. The Red Devils, who have won the title 20 times, finished 15th in May, 32 points behind Sunday's opponents and 42 behind the Champions Liverpool, which is the same as the number of points they picked up from their 38 games. Boss Ruben Amorim only took charge in November, and it was anything but a dream start to life at Old Trafford, winning just 16 of his 42 games in charge, but after spending just shy of £200m, he will be confident of a huge improvement this time around. The Gunners would also love an improvement on their league position after finishing as runners-up for the last three seasons; the last time they bettered that was back in 2003/04, when they won the last of their 13 league titles. United have actually been champions more recently, winning their last title back in 2012/13. Mikel Arteta has spent a similar amount as Amorim, bringing in five players, including strikers Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres, who he hopes can take them to the next step. Gyokeres was long linked with a move to Old Trafford to link up with his former Sporting manager, but instead, after scoring 57 goals in 49 appearances last season, he joined Arsenal for £64m. Man Utd vs Arsenal tips: United to get off to a flying start According to the Premier League winner odds, Arsenal are second favourites behind Liverpool, while United are fifth in the betting behind City and Chelsea. You can also get 15/4 on United finishing in the Premier League top four odds, while the Gunners are 1/5. The first game of the season is always hard to predict, but this is the perfect fixture for both sides to see where they're at. United have lost just two of their last 18 home league games against Arsenal, winning 10 and drawing six; however, both of those defeats have occurred since Arteta took charge. A win on Sunday would be the Reds' 100th over Arsenal in all competitions. They have met 243 times with United winning 99, Arsenal 89 and 55 draws, and a victory this weekend would make them the first ever team to beat Arsenal 100 times. Football betting sites have installed Arsenal as favourites, while United are home underdogs in the latest Premier League odds. The visitors have scored in each of their last 11 away league games at Old Trafford, which could make a compelling case for targeting a score draw. An even bolder bet would be to take the 6/1 odds on both teams to score and United to win. United's biggest issue last season was scoring goals with just 44 league goals but the signing of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should certainly fix that problem. Man Utd vs Arsenal betting: Mbeumo to shine on debut Former Brentford striker Mbeumo scored the first goal in 10 different games last season, on his way to scoring 21 goals for club and country, including against Arsenal in a 3-1 defeat. He also scored in the first minute in two consecutive games against Tottenham and West Ham, and he would no doubt love to get his United career off to a flying start. Betting sites are offering 10/1 on him doing it again on Sunday, you can also get 11/1 on him scoring last, but we like the price for him to score anytime on his Old Trafford bow. Man Utd vs Arsenal prediction 2: Bryan Mbuemo to score anytime - 17/5 BetVictor Man Utd vs Arsenal team news Man Utd vs Arsenal betting offers Betfred are offering existing customers the chance to claim £10 in free bets after placing a £10 bet builder on Man Utd vs Arsenal or any Premier League match across the opening weekend of the season. To qualify bettors must opt-in on the promotion before placing a £10 bet builder before kick-off on your selected game. Your bet builder must contain three selections or more and odds of 3/1 or greater. Once your qualifying wager has settled, your account will be credited with a £10 free bet to use on a bet builder. Free bets are active until 11.59pm on August 23. Please gamble responsibly When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. Betting can be addictive and it's important to stay in control of your betting. Never treat gambling as a way to make money, never bet more than you can afford and when the fun stops, stop. Gambling sites offer punters tools, like deposit limits, profit and loss trackers and self-exclusion options, to help them stay in control. But if you ever feel like you need help or advice on gambling addiction, don't hesitate to contact one of the charities or organisations below.

Weekend European football predictions: La Liga and Ligue 1 tips and odds

Our expert has picked out four tips from Saturday and Sunday's matches in Spain's La Liga and France's Ligue 1. We think Strasbourg and Valencia can both post wins. Saturday's European football tips Mika Biereth to score for Monaco vs Le Havre @ 10/11 with bet365 (Saturday, 6pm BST) Valencia to beat Real Sociedad @ 8/5 with bet365 (Saturday, 8.30pm BST) Getafe or draw double chance vs Celta Vigo @ 21/20 with bet365 (Sunday, 4pm BST) Strasbourg to beat Metz @ 5/4 with bet365 (Sunday, 4.15pm BST) Odds courtesy of bet365. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Already a bet365 member? Check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. Monaco vs Le Havre (Saturday, 6pm) Assuming Paris Saint-Germain again dominate Ligue 1 this season, Monaco are expected to be in the mix to finish best of the rest, having added the likes of Paul Pogba, Ansu Fati, Eric Dier and Lukas Hradecky to their ranks. But it is a player Monaco signed last season who could make an impact in their opener against Le Havre. Striker Mika Biereth joined the club from Sturm Graz in January and the 22-year-old adapted quickly to Ligue 1 with 13 goals in 16 league appearances. Going into his first full season at the club, he is a value bet at 10/11 to score in their opener against Le Havre, having found the net when the sides met in April. Valencia vs Real Sociedad (Saturday, 8pm) When Carlos Corberan left West Bromwich Albion to take charge at Valencia in December, he inherited a side who were 19th in the La Liga table. But under the former Huddersfield boss, Valencia got their act together, going unbeaten in 10 La Liga fixtures towards the end of the campaign to finish 12th. Corberan has now had a full summer to work with his side, bringing in some talented individuals such as Arnaut Danjuma and Baptiste Santamaria, and his team look overpriced at 8/5 to beat Real Sociedad. Valencia won just 11 league games last season but nine of those victories came at the Mestalla and Real Sociedad, who sold pivotal midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, lost 10 times on their travels in La Liga last season. Celta Vigo vs Getafe (Sunday, 4pm) The Estadio de Balaidos was not an easy place to go in La Liga last season, so it is no surprise that Celta Vigo are odds-on favourites to win there against Getafe on Sunday. But at this stage of the season, I'd be cautious about backing them at 8/11, given they have lost star youngster Fer Lopez to Wolves this summer and are overreliant on ageing forwards Borja Iglesias and Iago Aspas, who turned 38 this month. Getafe finished a respectable 13th in La Liga last term and defensive solidity was at the core of that, with just 39 goals conceded in 38 league matches – the same number as champions Barcelona. They are worth backing at 21/20 to nick at least a point off of Vigo. Metz vs Strasbourg (Sunday, 4.15pm) It could be an exciting season for Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who are preparing for the Conference League play-offs this month after finishing seventh in the French top flight last season. They look in a good place under Liam Rosenior and have added some exciting young talent over the summer with the likes of Joaquin Panichelli, Lucas Hogsberg and Mathis Amougou joining and Valentin Barco and Andrew Omobamidele's loan deals made permanent. The core of the squad looks much the same, with key defender Mamadou Sarr sold to Chelsea but brought back in on loan, Felix Lemarechal a creative midfield threat and Emanuel Emegha leading the line after scoring 14 Ligue 1 goals last term. At 5/4, they look a decent pick to beat Metz, who came up via the promotion play-offs last term and could be out of their depth after failing to win 16 games in the second tier.
