Tapestry Farms Spring Fling raises funds for refugee assistance, support

Yahoo22-04-2025
Tapestry Farms welcomes the community to its annual Spring Fling benefit, a fundraiser and celebration of the new growing season, on Friday, May 2 from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Waterfront Convention Center, 2021 State Street in Bettendorf. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the evening will feature live music, food and drink and a silent auction. Lanon Baccam, a combat veteran, public servant and Iowan whose family arrived in Mount Pleasant as Tai Dam refugees from Laos in 1980, will be the keynote speaker. Funds raised will support Tapestry Farms' work with refugees who resettle in the Quad Cities, focusing on access to housing, education, healthcare, food and employment. The 14 urban farm plots throughout the Quad Cities reclaim underutilized land to grow fresh, nutritious produce.
'We are so very thankful for the community of support that surrounds our work, growing fresh produce and walking alongside refugees from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti,' said Ann McGlynn, founder and executive director of Tapestry Farms. 'We are looking forward to an evening with hundreds of our friends, celebrating our work together and raising vital funding to continue on into our eighth year of refugees and neighbors, flourishing together.'
Lanon Baccam's parents came to the U.S. as part of a wave of resettlement by Iowa's governor at the time, Robert D. Ray. His administration was known for welcoming refugees. The Baccams built their life in Mount Pleasant, where his parents worked in the Mackay Envelope factory. Baccam enlisted in the Iowa National Guard at 17 and was later deployed to Afghanistan as a combat engineer. He worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, advancing policies that supported fellow veterans, opened access to jobs in agriculture and expanded rural broadband access. 'We're honored to welcome Lanon to this year's Spring Fling,' McGlynn said. 'His lived experience and lifelong service to others reflects the heart of our work—accompanying our refugee neighbors with dignity, trust, and practical support.'
Tapestry Farms helps refugee neighbors navigate healthcare and education systems and access housing, jobs and food. It has a small legal clinic and has helped over 20 refugees become U.S. citizens over the past seven years. Worldwide, there are over 43.4 million refugees who have fled their home countries because of conflict, persecution, violence and climate disasters. The Spring Fling is a way for Quad Citians to action on behalf of those who have fled to find homes in the community. Attendees will learn about Tapestry Farms' impact and how their support can make an impact on area refugee families.
'If you've ever wondered how to show up for refugees in our community, come to Spring Fling,' McGlynn said. 'It's a joyful evening that ushers in the growing season here in the Quad-Cities and will leave you full of hope and a deep sense of connection. We would love to have you there.'

Martinez waterfront eyed for revitalization by Southern California company

For many Bay Area cities, a downtown waterfront can be a source of vitality, but the city of Martinez is still waiting for its ship to come in. On Wednesday evening, the public was eager to get a look at a redevelopment proposal for its marina that had some people excited and others skeptical. On its own website, the city of Martinez refers to itself as the "Bay Area's Hidden Gem." But what may be most hidden is the reason anyone would go there. Now, the people are getting their hopes raised, once again, that that may be changing. "All of our businesses want to thrive, and the best way that they can thrive is if they have people here to see what they have to offer," said Martinez Chamber of Commerce President Aaron Alencastre. Martinez seems to have everything it needs to be a thriving destination for visitors. It's quaint downtown features historic buildings with small restaurants and antique shops. And then there's the waterfront, with a large park and marina that many cities would love to have. But it remains ghostly quiet, and the facilities have fallen into disrepair. Alencastre thinks he knows why. "Martinez lacks an attractor," he said. "You know, there's not something here that really drives people to come across the bridge and look at the marina and say, 'hey, what's that over there?' We've lacked that. And I think this project gives us the opportunity to see something like that happen. To give people a reason to seek out Martinez." The "project" he was talking about was a big secret, about to be revealed. At 7 o'clock, Tucker Sadler, an architectural company out of San Diego, was scheduled to present its proposal to revitalize the waterfront area. As the head of a city with no money of its own to spend, Mayor Brianne Zorn was clearly excited by the prospect. "Most of the reason why Martinez is quiet is we have not had organizations like Tucker Sadler look to Martinez and say, I would like to invest here," she said. "And it's a really wonderful opportunity so see somebody with as much experience as they have in other places in the country, looking at Martinez and saying, 'yes, this is where I would like to invest our development dollars.'" No details or renderings were being released before the meeting, but Zorn said the new development would probably be anchored by at least one hotel. And when she imagines what could be coming, her thoughts go to the similar-sized city of Edmonds, Washington. "They have a beautiful boutique downtown, they have a beautiful waterfront, lots of recreation and they have a ferry," she said. That would be important because, so far, Martinez hasn't qualified to be a stop for Bay Area ferry service. "There's a lot of opportunity for it," Zorn said. "We're very well situated. But, again, without the people there, it doesn't meet the threshold." People are what's important in any city, and downtown businesses like the Antique Corner could use a lot more foot traffic. "Foot traffic is like 90 percent of our business," said owner Ray Jensen. "When it's dead here, it's dead all day. And when we have people, it flourishes." Wendy Therrian is one of the vendors in the antique collective. She said she has high hopes for what a reimagined waterfront could mean. But she also understands why, after years of promises, some are keeping a wait-and-see attitude. "I think that there's a certain feeling that there's been an expectation and it hasn't been delivered within the time frame that folks expected," said Therrian. "But I really firmly believe, it's 2025, right. So, there's going to be something and they're going to unveil it. I have to feel positive about it. It's going to be great, I think." The proposal is still in its earliest stages. The city will have to decide whether or not to enter into an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA) with Tucker Sadler, but clearly there is excitement about the project. The waterfront is Martinez's own hidden gem. They hope that the evening's long-awaited reveal will eventually transform a diamond-in-the-rough into something that can really sparkle.

Milk's comeback is great news for Des Moines' AE Dairy

The New York Times deemed 2025 the " Strangest Year" for milk, but it's turned out to be a "great" year for AE Dairy in Des Moines, says CEO Miriam Erickson Brown. Why it matters: The family-owned operation is preparing to celebrate its centennial in 2030, despite national dairy turbulence. The big picture: Milk consumption has declined for decades, partly driven by shifting diet trends — from the fat-free craze of the '90s to the rise of plant-based alternatives in the 2000s. But last year, whole milk sales rose for just the second time since the 1970s, per market research firm Circana. Plant milk consumption (which the Ericksons call "plant juice") went down 5.9% amid concerns over added sugars and ultra-processed ingredients. What they're saying: AE Dairy benefits from a primarily Iowan customer base, where trends move more slowly in comparison to the coasts, Erickson Brown says. Its Des Moines plant distributes mainly around Iowa and neighboring areas like Kansas City. Zoom in: Now that dairy is "in" again, AE Dairy is experimenting with high-protein products. It recently released a protein-enhanced yogurt and "Hi, Protein!" milk and chocolate milk. Dutch Bros, a popular coffee chain that's popped off on TikTok, is using AE Dairy milk for its protein coffees. Cottage cheese demand has also prompted the company to release new flavors. Yes, but: In 2023, the Iowa Legislature legalized raw milk sales, which CFO Warren Erickson "wouldn't recommend" consuming. The bottom line: "If you're asking us, milk has always had the natural story, the wholesomeness, the health benefits and the nourishment. It's always been a centerpiece of Iowa," Erickson Brown says.
