People of Lake Palestine recovering one year after EF-1 Tornado
LAKE PALESTINE, Texas (KETK)- The people of Lake Palestine said even though the clean-up process is over, the storm left the area traumatized after a year of recovery.
'It was insane,' resident Shelby Soto said. 'It was like being in a movie when you first stepped out. It was surreal,'

Shelby Soto lives by the lake and lived through the May 23rd, 2024 EF-1 tornado. Soto said when it hit, she was on her porch with friends and family.
'All we could see was like a bunch of water and stuff flying around,' Soto said.
Soto and her friends and family took cover but worried for their animals and friends living by the lake.
'All we could do is pray and go inside because there was no time to, like, hide or anything, because there was no warning, no sirens, no text messages, nothing,' Soto said.

After the storm passed, their family discovered the severe damage. The area near Lake Palestine Resort was decimated with trees on the ground, trailer homes moved or rolled over and remains of the marina.
'It was just everywhere, there's debris everywhere,' Soto said. 'It looked insane, like there wasn't a part out here that didn't have some type of debris lying around.'
It has taken a year to recover, and Soto believes it's all thanks to the community banding together.
'After it, it really brought everybody together,' Soto said. 'We're like a little, small, little family out here now.'
The community is now helping other storm victims by hosting a fundraiser Friday night. Raising money for the people of Frankston, who were hit by an e-f zero tornado earlier this month.

Tornado confirmed in Wheaton
The Springfield National Weather Service did confirm that an EF-1 tornado touched down at the Body of Christ church on the southwest side of town. The tornado tracked through Wheaton and dissipated a half mile northeast of town. The damage path was a little over 3 miles long and up to 100 yards wide. Winds were estimated to be up to 85 mph. May 2025: A look back at last month's weather
Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month for May 2025: Warmest High Temperature: 81 degrees (May 1st) Coolest High Temperature: 54 degrees (May 26th) Coolest Low Temperature: 36 degrees (May 10th) Warmest Low Temperature: 61 degrees (May 16th) Overall, for the month of May, we were BELOW average. That's not so surprising considering how cold Memorial Day was! Our average May temperature is 61.3 degrees, and we ended up at 59.6 degrees for the month, which is 1.7 degrees below normal. May began on a warm note. The warmest temperature of the month occurred on May 1st at 81 degrees! However, eventually the colder weather set in. Outside of May 29th, the last ten days featured temperatures that were a good bit below normal and that was enough to sway the month to the below normal side. Of particular interest was the stretch from Friday, May 25th to Tuesday, May 27th, where three out of five days failed to see highs reach 60 degrees! In fact, we did not reach 70 degrees for a week straight from the 22nd to the 28th. Wettest Day: 0.73″ (May 13th) Number of Days with Measurable Rainfall: 18 out of 31 days May provided beneficial rains to many parts of the region that were flirting with drought at the beginning of spring. Most towns in May experienced above average rainfall, with Beckley coming in at about a half inch above normal at just over five inches. A lot of this rain came down quickly, however, which was not as beneficial to the water table. However, overall conditions related to drought did improve during the month of May. Memorial Day was one of the coolest holidays in recent memory! High temperatures were stuck in the 50s for most of the region. Beckley only reached 54 degrees officially! We should be in the low to mid 70s. The clouds, occasional sprinkles and overall gloom did not make for good boating or swimming weather to say the least.
