
Detailed New Images of Jupiter's Aurora Reveal Strange and Unexplained Brightness
NASA's Webb space telescope has captured haunting new views of Jupiter's auroral display, revealing the bright light show in exquisite, never-before-seen details. Using the telescope's most recent observations of the gas giant, scientists uncovered a curious discrepancy between how Jupiter's auroras appear to Webb versus Hubble.
Webb's NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) zoomed into Jupiter's poles to capture the planet's fast-varying auroral features, which are 100 times brighter than the ones seen on Earth.
'We wanted to see how quickly the auroras change, expecting them to fade in and out ponderously, perhaps over a quarter of an hour or so,' Jonathan Nichols, a researcher at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, and lead author of a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications, said in a statement. 'Instead, we observed the whole auroral region fizzing and popping with light, sometimes varying by the second.'
On Earth, auroras take place when energetic particles from the Sun interact with the planet's magnetic field and its atmosphere, creating shimmering displays of light across the skies known as the Northern and Southern Lights. Aside from the Sun's particles, Jupiter has an additional source that creates its auroras. Jupiter's strong magnetic field grabs charged particles from its surroundings and accelerates them to high speeds. These speedy particles, some of which are thrown into space by Jupiter's orbiting moon Io, slam into the planet's atmosphere at high energies and excite the gas, causing it to glow.
Using Webb's recent observations of Jupiter's aurora, the scientists studied emissions from a molecule called trihydrogen cation. The special molecule is formed when energetic particles rip an electron off of a hydrogen molecule, and that molecule then reacts with other hydrogen molecules. The study found that the trihydrogen cation emissions are far more variable than they previously believed. Understanding the behavior of the special molecule helps scientists better understand how Jupiter's atmosphere cools and heats.
The scientists also took images of Jupiter's auroras with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope at the same time Webb made its observations, capturing them in ultraviolet light. They uncovered a strange discrepancy between the two sets of data, the brightest light observed by Webb had no real counterpart in the Hubble images.
'This has left us scratching our heads,' Nichols said. 'In order to cause the combination of brightness seen by both Webb and Hubble, we need to have a combination of high quantities of very low-energy particles hitting the atmosphere, which was previously thought to be impossible. We still don't understand how this happens.'
The team plans on carrying out follow-up observations of Jupiter's auroras using Webb and compare them to data collected by the ongoing Juno mission. The spacecraft has been orbiting the gas giant since 2016, capturing Jupiter and its moons in exquisite detail. Webb previously captured images of Jupiter's glowing auroras at its north and south poles, providing scientists with a new perspective of the planet's light display in infrared wavelengths.

UFO sleuths want fewer secrets in Trump-era investigations
After generations of stigma and secrecy around sightings of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), or what the public calls UFOs, investigators probing hundreds of unsolved cases say the second Trump administration could be a turning point for transparency. "We're trying to get as much of the raw evidence out as we can without putting our partners' equities at risk," said Jon Kosloski, director of the Pentagon's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, the government-wide task force leading research into mysterious sightings. "The office has hired additional personnel and we're investing in automated security review software that can redact the sensitive information from videos," he said of an effort to release more currently classified material related to the probes. Congress established the Resolution Office in 2022 to "detect, identify and attribute" mysterious objects of interest in the air, outer space, and underwater, with special focus on mitigating potential threats to military operations and national security. More than 1800 cases have been reviewed by the Pentagon so far, with the vast majority ultimately resolved as likely balloons, drones, debris or animals based on a comprehensive review of available data. Kosloski says "several dozen" cases remain anomalous even after rigorous analysis of evidence. They continue to receive new reports of anomalies by military service members and the general public every month. "It's a potential problem, a national security problem, safety of flight issue," Kosloski told ABC News. "We seem to have the full support of the administration" in pursuing answers. President Donald Trump has famously been a UFO skeptic. "It's never been my thing. I have to be honest," he told podcaster Joe Rogan in an October 2024 interview. "I have never been a believer." "I won't talk to you about what I know about it but it's very interesting," Trump told his son, Donald Trump Jr., in an online video during the 2020 campaign. "But Roswell's a very interesting place with a lot of people that would like to know what's going on." Since taking office a second time, Trump has vowed "radical transparency" across government. Last month, he ordered the release of all remaining classified files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy Jr. Some UFO enthusiasts across the political spectrum are pushing for a similar release of government files related to extraterrestrial mysteries. "When you have only certain information that's shared with the American people, that's when conspiracy theories happen. And it's, in my opinion, that conspiracy theories can be detrimental," said Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., in April as she opened the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets. Lawmakers from both parties have proposed legislation to force government agencies to disclose more information on UAPs, but Congress has yet to pass it. "The issue is when we mix secrecy with a stigma, and that we create such a stigma around a phenomenon that it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for agencies, for people to look at the issue seriously," said former Associate NASA Administrator Mike Gold, who served on the agency's UAP Independent Study Team. Gold, who is now part of the UAP Disclosure Fund, an independent group of scientific and national security experts, says Congress must fund more aggressive analysis of troves of existing government data. "If we study UAP, not only can we help with national security," Gold said, "but even if we don't discover something exotic, what's the worst case scenario? We discover an incredible new physical phenomenon?" Critics of the Pentagon effort led by Kosloski say it has been hobbled by "staffing shortfalls," bogged down by "bureaucratic confusion," and mired in "excessive secrecy." In recent testimony before Congress, whistleblowers insist the government is still hiding evidence of non-human intelligence, which top officials have long denied. Kosloski has accelerated the release of intensive investigations, publishing unclassified resolution reports for some of the most high-profile cases, detailing the technical and intelligence analysis behind the conclusion. "Our hope is to be able to triage them, identify those that have the best scientific data, the nexus with national security interests and the true anomalies behind them, and focus our attention on those really anomalous cases," Kosloski said. Last year, the Pentagon completed a historic review of 80 years of records related to unidentified anomalous phenomena, concluding there is "no evidence that any U.S. government investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology." Planet Nine? Not quite, but some astronomers think they've spotted a new dwarf planet
A possible new dwarf planet has been discovered at the edge of our solar system, so far-flung that it takes around 25,000 years to complete one orbit around the sun. The object, known as 2017 OF201, was found by researchers at the Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University who were searching for 'Planet Nine,' a hypothetical planet larger than Earth that is thought to orbit beyond Neptune. Some astronomers theorize that a mysterious ninth planet, which so far remains undetected, could explain an unusual clustering of objects and other anomalies observed in the outer solar system. In searching for the elusive Planet Nine, researchers instead turned up a different resident in our cosmic backyard. 'It's not very different from how Pluto was discovered,' said Sihao Cheng, a member at the Institute for Advanced Study who led the research team. 'This project was really an adventure.' If confirmed, the newfound dwarf planet would be what Cheng calls an 'extreme cousin' of Pluto. The findings were published on the preprint website arXiv and have not yet been peer-reviewed. Cheng and his colleagues estimate that 2017 OF201 measures about 435 miles across — significantly smaller than Pluto, which measures nearly 1,500 miles across. A dwarf planet is classified as a celestial body that orbits the sun that has enough mass and gravity to be mostly round, but unlike other planets, has not cleared its orbital path of asteroids and other objects. Eritas Yang, one of the study's co-authors and a graduate student at Princeton University, said that one of 2017 OF201's most interesting features is its extremely elongated orbit. At its farthest point from the sun, the object is more than 1,600 times more distant than the Earth is to the sun. The researchers found the dwarf planet candidate by meticulously sifting through a huge data set from a telescope in Chile that was scanning the universe for evidence of dark energy. By cobbling together observations over time, the researchers identified a moving object with migrations that followed a clear pattern. 2017 OF201 is likely one of the most distant visible objects in the solar system, but its discovery suggests there could be other dwarf planets populating that region of space. 'We were using public data that has been there for a long time,' said Jiaxuan Li, a study co-author and a graduate student at Princeton University. 'It was just hidden there.' Li said the object is close to the sun at the moment, which means the researchers need to wait about a month before they can conduct follow-up observations using ground-based telescopes. The scientists are also hopeful that they can eventually secure some time to study the object with the Hubble Space Telescope or the James Webb Space Telescope. In the meantime, Cheng said he hasn't given up searching for Planet Nine. The new discovery, however, may throw a wrench into some long-standing theories of the planet's existence. The hypothesis behind Planet Nine is that a planet several times the size of Earth in the outer solar system could explain why a group of icy objects seem to have unusually clustered orbits. 'Under the influence of Planet Nine, all objects that do not have this specific orbital geometry will eventually become unstable and get kicked out of the solar system,' Yang said. 2017 OF201's elongated orbit makes it an outlier from the clustered objects, but Yang's calculations suggest that the orbit of 2017 OF201 should remain stable over roughly the next billion years. In other words, 2017 OF201 likely would not be able to remain if Planet Nine does exist. But Yang said more research is needed, and the discovery of the new dwarf planet candidate is not necessarily a death knell for Planet Nine. For one, the simulations only used one specific location for Planet Nine, but scientists don't all agree on where the hypothetical planet lurks — if it's there at all. Konstantin Batygin, a professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology, proposed the existence of Planet Nine in a study published with his Caltech colleague Mike Brown in 2016. He said the discovery of 2017 OF201 doesn't prove or disprove the theory. The objects in the outer solar system that are likely to show a footprint of Planet Nine's gravity, Batygin said, are the ones where the closest points on their orbits around the sun are still distant enough that they don't strongly interact with Neptune. 'This one, unfortunately, does not fall into that category,' Batygin told NBC News. 'This object is on a chaotic orbit, and so when it comes to the question of 'What does it really mean for Planet Nine?' The answer is not very much, because it's chaotic.' Batygin said he was excited to see the new study because it adds more context to how objects came to be in the outer solar system, and he called the researchers' efforts mining public data sets 'heroic.' Cheng, for his part, said he hasn't abandoned hope of finding Planet Nine. 'This whole project started as a search for Planet Nine, and I'm still in that mode,' he said. On this day (June 3) 60 years ago, a NASA astronaut stepped outside his Gemini spacecraft and made history as the first American to perform an extavehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk. NASA astronaut Edward H. White II left his Gemini 4 capsule and crew mate Jim McDivitt for a 20-minute spacewalk on June 3, 1965. It was only the second extravehicular activity (EVA) ever made (the first was by Soviet-era cosmonaut Alexei Leonov a few months earlier) and the first by an American. White brought with him a camera and a small jet pack; the latter did not work very well. He was connected to his spacecraft by an umbilical. Gemini 4 entered an orbit about Earth between 103 and 180 miles (165 and 289 kilometers) in altitude. During the spacewalk, White was in radio contact with ground controllers in Hawaii and Houston. There are other, better-composed photos of White on the same historic spacewalk, but this one can be used to illustrate one of, if not the most important lesson NASA learned from his EVA: They did not know how yet to spacewalk. White floated well enough, but he had no real control of his movements, even with a prototype handheld jet pack. There were no handrails for him to use on the outside of the Gemini capsule, and he had not trained in neutral buoyancy underwater — the best analog for the conditions in the vacuum of space. Still, even with the troubles he encountered, White called the end of his EVA the "saddest moment" of his life.
