Michigan State opponent, Big Ten foe Iowa names starting quarterback for 2025
Michigan State football is gearing up for the 2025 football season, the second under Jonathan Smith. While it may be a long ways away, the Spartans will be making a vaunted trip to Kinnick Stadium to face off with the Iowa Hawkeyes in late November.
While a lot can happen between then and now, offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who is also entering his second season at the helm of the Hawkeye's offense, has named a starting quarterback for the upcoming year.
South Dakota State transfer Mark Gronowski has won the job, beating out Auburn transfer Hank Brown, amongst others.
Gronowski is one of the biggest transfer portal gets this cycle, with the former Jackrabbit having a very successful career at the FCS level, where he threw for over 10,000 passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 1,767 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns.

Iowa offensive line leader named to ESPN's top 100 college football players of 2025
The hype around the Iowa Hawkeyes' offense unsurprisingly lies within the talented transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski, who could elevate the Hawkeyes to the next level, but for him to be great, it starts up front. Gronowski can only be as good as his offensive line, and that starts right in the middle with his veteran center, Logan Jones, who is back for another year at Iowa before certainly heading to the NFL to play on Sundays. Logan Jones is a senior for the Hawkeyes and has molded himself into the quintessential Iowa offensive lineman. He is mean and nasty while understanding the game at a supremely high level. He makes Tim Lester's offense go as much as the quarterback. His production and expectations have landed him among ESPN's top 100 college football players for 2025 at No. 98. 98. Logan Jones C, Iowa, senior2024 stat: 1 sack allowed2024 postseason ranking: NR The 6-foot-3, 302-pound Jones is the linchpin of the Hawkeyes' line who helped running back Kaleb Johnson have a breakout season in 2024. A converted defensive lineman, Jones has settled in well to the role and turned himself into one of the most consistent centers in the country. - Paolo Uggetti, ESPN Jones is smart, strong, and tough, which makes him such a strong cog at the center of the offensive line. In Tim Lester's offense, which has wrinkles from prior Iowa schemes, Jones needs to know the calls, the checks, and the protection. He handles all things in unison with the quarterback to make this thing go. A local product from Council Bluffs, Iowa, Logan Jones embodies doing whatever it takes to be great. He came to Iowa on the defensive side of the ball but trusted the coaching staff when they moved him over to offense, and has not just accepted it, but taken off into one of the best centers in all of college football. Former Iowa football OT, current Bucs star in elite company in NFL players poll
We're now in the top 30 in the newest NFL players ranking of the best in the game currently. This is where the list gets extremely hard to make, as there are so many fantastic players in the league, all deserving of respect. But this is why the players get paid the big bucks. Iowa fans most recently saw George Kittle come in at 31st on the ranking, but he wasn't the highest-ranked former Hawkeye on the list. Because that honor belongs to one of the offensive tackles in the entire game. A guy who can play both left and right tackle at an elite level. And a player who just became the highest-paid offensive lineman in the history of the NFL. Tristan Wirfs was named the 28th-best player in the entire league by his fellow players. Wirfs' place on this list is very fair, maybe even a little bit too low. He's a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time First-team All-Pro, and a Super Bowl champion. Oh, and he's only 26 years old. The sky is the limit for Wirfs in terms of what he can do the rest of his career. There's a very good chance he could go down as the best offensive lineman to ever play the game. It's high praise, but he's deserved it with what he's done in the league so far. There's also a good chance that Wirfs ends up being the highest-ranked former Hawk on this list, just beating out Kittle. The rest of the list is still being revealed gradually, so we'll have to wait and see if that's the case. Regardless, it's a great accomplishment for Wirfs and another ledger to add to his resume. It's great to see a former Hawkeye have this much success in the NFL, especially after a stellar career in Iowa City. And it'll be exciting to see what Wirfs can do in 2025. Michigan State football included in ESPN's preseason bowl projections
One of the two experts at ESPN has the Spartans bowling this season. ESPN has released their preseason bowl projections, and one of the two writers included in the projections has the Spartans reaching the postseason this fall. That would be Mark Schlabach, while Kyle Bonagura has Michigan State failing to reach bowl eligibility for a fourth straight season. Schlabach has Michigan State landing in the nearby GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. His projected matchup for the Spartans is against Ohio out of the Mid-American Conference. Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over/under of 5.5, signifying the Spartans will be right on the fringe of reaching the postseason. The Spartans went 5-7 last season in year one under head coach Jonathan Smith, but expectations have been raised this year with fans expecting a bowl berth from the Spartans. Michigan State opens the 2025 season next week against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium on August 29 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
