China's Plateauing Fuel Use Is Without Precedent, IEA Says
(Bloomberg) -- A slowdown in the growth of China's fuel use is without precedent for a country at its stage of economic development, the International Energy Agency said.

Rapid uptake of alternative transport, coupled with shifts in the Asian nation's economy, mean fuel use is close to plateauing and may already have done so. There's may be a small drop in fuel use this year, the Paris-based adviser said.
'For China's fuel growth trajectory to be leveling off at this early stage of development is without historical precedent,' the IEA said. 'This slide is likely to accelerate over the medium-term, which would be sufficient to generate a plateau in total China oil demand this decade.'
China's use of the three most important fuel products - gasoline, jet/kerosene and gasoil - declined slightly to 8.1 million barrels a day in 2024, the IEA said in its monthly Oil Market Report. This is just below 2021 levels and narrowly above 2019 use.
For 2025, the agency anticipates a modest gain of 210,000 barrels a day in China's oil demand but there are signs the country's fuel consumption 'may even have passed its peak.'
A slump in the construction sector, historically a cornerstone of gasoil use, alongside persistently underwhelming consumer spending, which is closely associated with personal mobility and gasoline demand, has meant that recent economic gains appear to have been less oil intensive than in the past, according to the IEA.
New electric vehicles currently account for half of car sales, undercutting around 250,000 to 300,000 barrels a day of demand growth in 2024. The wider use of compressed and liquefied natural gas in road freight displaced around 150,000 barrels a day, the report showed.
Expansion in the provision of public transport, especially high-speed rail, has also contributed to the weakening in fuel use.
These fuel substitutions have suppressed demand growth by around 1.2 million barrels a day since 2019 and will cancel out a further 400,000 barrels a day this year, mainly due to accelerating EV penetration, the IEA said.

Results were shared in an oral presentation at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Congress 2025, held June 13-16 in Glasgow, United Kingdom. 'Today's results underscore the promising potential of Intellia's approach to gene editing therapy – a one-time treatment that was well tolerated and offered a highly differentiated, durable effect for patients suffering from a serious disease,' said Intellia President and Chief Executive Officer John Leonard, M.D. 'Seeing all 10 patients in the Phase 1 portion of this study free from both HAE attacks and chronic therapy at nearly two years of median follow-up is incredibly encouraging. In the Phase 1 portion of the study, a one-time dose of 25 mg (N=3), 50 mg (N=4) or 75 mg (N=3) of lonvo-z was administered via intravenous infusion and plasma kallikrein protein levels were measured along with HAE attacks. At the time of the February 12 data cutoff, patients were attack-free and treatment-free for a median of nearly two years. With up to three years of follow-up, a single dose of lonvo-z led to a mean reduction in monthly HAE attack rate of 98% over the study period, compared to pre-treatment baseline. For all 10 patients, deep, dose-dependent and durable reductions in plasma kallikrein protein continued to be observed through the latest assessment. Safety Across all three dose levels, lonvo-z has been well tolerated and continues to demonstrate a favorable safety profile consistent with earlier data presented at EAACI in 2024. The most frequent adverse events during the study period were infusion-related reactions (IRRs). IRRs were mostly Grade 1 and resolved with all patients receiving the full dose. With up to 3 years of follow-up, no treatment-emergent serious adverse events were observed, and no treatment-related adverse events were observed during the period following 28 days after dosing. Clinical Development Plans Intellia's global Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled HAELO trial is ongoing to assess the safety and efficacy of lonvo-z at the 50 mg dosage. Elon Musk biographer says major Tesla merger could be imminent: 'I think it's going to happen'
Could Tesla eventually merge with another of Elon Musk's companies, xAI? A prominent insider thinks such a move is increasingly likely. Walter Isaacson, the prominent Musk biographer who has received unprecedented access to Tesla's CEO, recently said he expects the two companies to eventually merge, Not a Tesla App reported. During a CNBC interview, Isaacson said combining Tesla and xAI would ultimately better serve each company's mission. "I think it's going to happen," Isaacson said, per "Because Musk, even in my book when he's starting xAI, [was] talking about [how] these chatbots are fine, but what you need is real-world AI. You need to be able to not only take all the texts and tweets that have ever been written, but all the videos from Teslas and all the Optimus robot [is] seeing and hearing." Tesla was a pioneer in electric vehicles and still has the top-selling vehicles in the space — although its sales numbers have dipped this year. But Musk has repeatedly said that the future of the company is tied in more than just cars, including "vast numbers of autonomous humanoid robots." Renault boss De Meo leaves, company says, after report he will lead Kering
PARIS (Reuters) -Renault chief executive Luca De Meo is leaving the carmaker, the company said on Sunday, shortly after paper Le Figaro reported he was set to take over the lead at struggling luxury group Kering. "Luca de Meo has expressed his decision to step down in order to take on new challenges outside the automotive sector," the company said in a statement. Kering declined to comment. A person familiar with the thinking of Kering Chairman and CEO Francois-Henri Pinault told Reuters he was actively working on his succession, which includes splitting up the two roles to hire a new chief executive.
