The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced Monday the arrest of another suspect in the kidnapping and killing of a mother and her son in Quezon City last year.
Atty. Ariel Calub, the agent on the case, said the suspect is a jail officer.
'Kung titignan po natin ang mga kasama po niya puro mga ex-convict from Muntinlupa. Mga bagong laya po ito at siya po ang nagproprovide ng mga tirahan,' Calub said in a briefing.
(If we look at the people he's with, they are mostly ex-convicts from Muntinlupa. These are recently released individuals, and he's the one providing them with shelter.)
Calub said the arrested individual is one of the people who held up the two victims while they were driving at 2:45 a.m. on June 10 in Quezon City.
The son was killed during the incident while the group abducted the mother.
After the group demanded a P5 million ransom for the mother's release, the victim's family immediately sought help from the NBI.
The NBI previously said that the family's driver conspired with the suspects and tipped them off, leading them to cut off contact with authorities.
The mother's remains were later located in the town of Bai in Laguna.
Meanwhile, the NBI previously arrested a jail officer and a former person deprived of liberty in July 2024.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago said charges have been filed against the suspect and a warrant of arrest was issued by a QC regional trial court. —RF, GMA Integrated News

3 auto shops raided in Davao for illegal importation, rebuilding of right-hand vehicles

Authorities raided three auto surplus shops in Davao City for allegedly illegally importing and rebuilding right-hand-drive vehicles. In a statement on Wednesday, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said initial investigation revealed the surplus shops are not accredited to import, rebuild, or deal in right-hand drive motor vehicles. LTO said it found employees engaged in rebuilding right-hand drive motor vehicles in the backyard of their premises. 'This is part of our sustained operations since the raid we conducted in Quezon City last month against these kinds of illegal activities. We are conducting an investigation and charges will be filed,' LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said. 'The importation of right-hand drive motor vehicles is also illegal itself,' he added, citing Republic Act 8506, which has a penalty of imprisonment and a fine of P50,000. The law states that, 'It shall be unlawful for any person to import, cause the importation of, register, cause the registration of, use, or operate any vehicle with its steering wheel right-hand side thereof in any highway, street or road, whether private or public or of the national or local government.' During the raid on May 21, authorities also impounded about 45 right-hand drive vehicles from the said surplus shops.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

Teves stays in Bilibid despite court order for transfer to Manila City Jail

National Bureau of Investigation Director Jaime Santiago said Wednesday a Manila court has ordered the transfer of former Negros Oriental representative Arnolfo 'Arnie' Teves Jr. to the Manila City Jail. Teves is currently detained at the NBI facility in the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City. 'One court in Manila has already issued a commitment order, directing us to commit the person of congressman Teves to the Manila City Jail,' Santiago said in a press briefing. However, Santiago said he halted the transfer, explaining that several courts in Manila are handling Teves' cases. 'Baka mamaya 'yung isang court na 'yun na natanggap namin sa BJMP Manila, 'yung isa naman sa Bicutan, 'yung isa naman— so sabi ko sa aming warden, i-hold ninyo muna 'yan,' Santiago said. (It's possible that one of the courts will order his detention to BJMP Manila, another one to Bicutan, and another one somewhere else—so I told our warden, hold them for now.) According to the NBI, Teves is facing the following charges: 10 counts of murder, 13 counts of frustrated murder, four counts of attempted murder before the Manila regional trial court (RTC) Branch 51 Murder case before the Manila RTC Branch 12 Murder case before the Manila RTC Branch 15 Murder case before the Bayawan RTC Branch 63 Illegal possession of firearms and illegal possession of explosives at the Manila RTC Branch 12 Terrorist Financing, prevention, and suppression act before the Quezon City RTC Branch 77 Meanwhile, Santiago said Teves' camp has also filed a motion to consolidate the cases. 'Antayin natin ang final decision gn Manila courts. Courts ha? Marami eh. Para finally ma-determine namin saan namin finally i-turn over si Congressman Teves,' Santiago said. (Let's wait for the final decision of the Manila courts. Courts, okay? There are several. So we can finally determine where we will finally turn over Congressman Teves.) In the meantime, Santiago said he has ordered NBI personnel to give Teves his rights, to protect him, and to prevent his escape. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

NBI, BI arrest Korean fugitive staying in PH for nearly 6 years

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have arrested an individual wanted in Korea for fraud amounting to 10 million Korean won, NBI Director Jaime Santiago said Wednesday. According to Santiago, the NBI conducted the operation after the Organized and Transnational Crime Division (OTCD) received a communication from Korea in 2023 that the man is wanted in their country. "From then on, with the help of our Immigration, they started looking for this guy. Finally, they were able to get an asset na naituro na... nandyan lang pala [yung subject] sa Malate," Santiago said in a press briefing. (From then on, with the help of our Immigration, they started looking for this guy. Finally, they were able to get an asset who gave a tip that the subject was actually just in Malate.) According to Santiago, the NBI's manhunt operation for other fugitives referred by the Korean Embassy to the Philippine government is ongoing. "Isa lamang siya sa list (He is only one of the names on the list). Actually, this is the second arrest natin of Korean national who are fugitives from our country," he said. BI Deputy Spokesperson Melvin Mabulac said that based on travel records, the man arrived in the country in July 2019, classifying him as an overstaying alien. "Wala siyang ginawang any attempt to extend the status, 'yung Immigration status. That's why it's very violative sa Immigration Law. Overstaying siya. At the same manner din, marami siyang kaso dito at it would warrant the filing of undesirability and puwede siya ma-deport," Mabulac said. (He made no attempt to extend his immigration status. That's why it's a clear violation of Immigration Law. He's overstaying. At the same time, he has many cases here, which would warrant the filing of undesirability and he can be deported.) To prevent such cases, Mabulac said the BI has implemented an advanced passenger information system, which connects the country's system to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). "Upon mag-submit sila ng kanilang manifest, wala pa sa ating bansa, there's already an advanced vetting. And we are on the stage wherein ang limang airlines ngayon ang connected," he said (Upon submitting their manifest, even before they arrive in our country, there's already an advanced vetting. And we are at the stage where five airlines are now connected.) Meanwhile, NBI-OTCD chief Jerome Bomediano said the fugitive has been charged with estafa, falsification of public documents, malicious mischief, grave threat, damage to property, and human trafficking before Philippine courts. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
