TVS Motor strategically times product rollout to match market dynamics
Two- and three-wheeler maker
TVS Motor Company
is looking to expand its network as some of the company's electric vehicle (EV) products are in the 'final stages' of development even as the launch of these products is strategically timed by the company.
'You will see these products in the coming quarters,' KN Radhakrishnan, CEO of
TVS Motor
Company said on Monday at the company's Q4 earnings call. "Even if the products are ready, we ensure they enter the market when they can achieve their full potential. Sometimes, it's a strategic decision to delay the launch to align with market dynamics.he added, while reaffirming that TVS continues to invest in both ICE and EV products.
'Brilliant' PLI incentive
TVS is among a few automakers to benefit from the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. As a result, the company has seen margin improvement, which was reflected in its Q4 FY25 earnings.
'We look at PLI in totality, which is 0.5 per cent of the total turnover, and it is a brilliant PLI incentive,' the CEO said.
The company stated that it has recognised the PLI for the entire financial year 2024-25, based on progress in line with the Ministry of Heavy Industries' SOP on PLI. Its operating EBITDA margin of 14 per cent in Q4 includes the full-year PLI benefit, covering all previous quarters. For Q4 alone, the EBITDA margin stands at 12.5 per cent, compared to 11.3 per cent in Q4 FY24.
While the incentives apply to sales of the iQube electric scooter, the CEO did not disclose the percentage of the category of EV currently benefiting from these incentives.'We have to look at the total benefit for the companies accruing. We should not look at which segment and how much,' he said.
The government launched the ₹25,938-crore scheme in 2021 to boost domestic manufacturing of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) products and attract investments across the automotive value chain.
Under the scheme, companies receive incentives based on sales growth compared to a base year, provided they meet specific criteria related to domestic value addition and investment levels. Last year, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra submitted incentive claims under the PLI scheme, which have since been approved by the government.
Going forward, Radhakrishnan expects the PLI benefits to continue.
Made in India cells
The company has also applied for its new electric three-wheeler, while it is also planning to start manufacturing cells in India. Currently, its majority import includes cells, but plans are in place for domestic production.
"Cells will soon be manufactured in India, and we are partnering with several companies in this regard. So, the EV journey is just beginning," he added. TVS reported revenue from EV sales at ₹3,364 crore in FY25, with EV sales rising 44 per cent to 2.79 lakh units, compared to 1.94 lakh units in FY24.
In Q4 FY25, its EV revenue stood at ₹889 crore, with sales growing 54 per cent to 76,000 units, up from 49,000 units in the same quarter last year.
Growth momentum to continue
According to the CEO, the January-March period saw a slowdown in the two-wheeler industry, mainly because last year's Diwali season had exceptional growth, with rural markets outpacing urban ones for the first time. Additionally, retail financing companies may have capitalised on this growth, and there was some tightening of retail finance in the last quarter.
However, he is confident that these reflections are becoming much more refined this year.
TVS expects the growth momentum in the domestic market for FY26 to mirror last year, despite a potentially moderate first quarter. He sees the scooter segment growing over motorcycles. While April is seeing the base effect from last year, May and June are expected to perform better, aided by a longer marriage season this year, he said.
The company believes growth will be driven by factors such as a reduction in the benchmark repo rate, lower EMIs, income tax rebates in the budget, infrastructure improvements, an uptick in the replacement cycle, and expectations of a normal monsoon, all of which are likely to boost consumer sentiment.
For FY26, TVS has also allocated a capex of ₹1,800 crore, up from ₹1,100 crore last year. The company reveals that majority of this will be directed towards new product development, technology, R&D, and some capacity enhancements.
On CNG-driven vehicles, Radhakrishnan said, "It is a strong option, but it's important to consider when, how, and which models to focus on. We are studying this closely, as it's a critical area of work."
Good momentum in exports
While TVS acknowledges challenges arising from the current geopolitical situation, it remains optimistic about the strong demand for two-wheelers.
TVS exports to the LATAM region have seen strong growth, with high demand across markets like Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala. However, there have been some challenges in the Middle East.
"LATAM performed well last year, but the African markets saw mixed momentum, with growth in key countries slowing due to economic challenges, including higher inflation and currency devaluation. While Sri Lanka has shown signs of recovery, Bangladesh continues to face some challenges,' he said.By the end of the year, TVS owned- British iconic bike maker
Norton Motorcycles
will begin launching new products in global markets.

Nod for 806 projects under PLI
New Delhi: The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, launched to strengthen India's manufacturing base and boost exports, has approved 806 applications across 14 sectors so far, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday. As of July, a total of Rs1,856 crore in incentives has been disbursed in the ongoing financial year (FY26), taking the cumulative disbursal since inception to Rs21,689 crore, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. The PLI schemes, with an overall outlay of Rs1.97 lakh crore, are designed to make Indian industries globally competitive and bring in large-scale investments, the Union Minister noted. 'The approved sectors include electronics, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, food processing, solar modules, specialty steel, medical devices, telecom, and drones, among others,' he added. Till June, investments worth Rs1.90 lakh crore have been realised under the PLI schemes. This has led to incremental production and sales of more than Rs17 lakh crore, while exports have crossed Rs7.5 lakh crore. The scheme has also created over 12.3 lakh direct and indirect jobs across the country. Electronics and pharmaceuticals have emerged as major beneficiaries. Mobile phone production, for instance, has grown by 146 per cent in value terms between 2020-21 and 2024-25, while exports of mobiles have surged nearly eightfold, from Rs22,870 crore in 2020-21 to Rs2 lakh crore in 2024-25. The pharmaceutical sector has reported cumulative sales of Rs2.66 lakh crore in three years, with exports accounting for Rs1.70 lakh crore. India has even transitioned from being a net importer of bulk drugs to a net exporter during this period. The government said that measures like quarterly disbursement of claims, online application systems, simplified compliance requirements, and faster regulatory approvals have been introduced to ensure timely support under the scheme.

'He's interested in sports, but doesn't play games in politics': PM Modi on NDA vice-president nominee CP Radhakrishnan
NEW DELHI: "We have been friends for over 40 years; back then, our hair was black," PM Narendra Modi recalled at the felicitation of NDA vice-presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan (CPR) during NDA parliamentary party meeting on Parliament premises on Tuesday. The PM expressed happiness at the enthusiasm among allies for "CPR" and urged opposition to support his candidature. Radhakrishnan is likely to file his nomination papers Wednesday, accompanied by nearly 160 MPs and CMs of NDA-governed states. Twenty proposers and as many supporters are expected to join him when he does so. Sources said the documentation work for his nomination was completed on Tuesday. After felicitating Radhakrishnan with a shawl, Modi praised his simple lifestyle and dedication to public service, noting cryptically, "He might have a lot of interest in sports, but he does not play games in politics". Like Modi, Radhakrishnan, a two-time former Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore and former Tamil Nadu BJP president, was an RSS functionary before joining Jana Sangh and later BJP. Modi's remarks on Radhakrishnan's interest in sports and political integrity reminded political circles of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned as vice president on July 21 amid indications of strained ties with the governing party. Modi lauded Radhakrishnan's 40 years of public service and appealed for his unanimous election. However, opposition later announced the name of former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate, ensuring a vice-presidential election on Sept 9. Modi's speech covered various issues, including S&P Global Ratings' recent upgrade of India's long-term sovereign credit rating, which, he said, highlights the robust condition of the country's economy and will attract more investment. He said after his Independence Day speech, in which he announced next-generation reforms and GST rate simplification, he was told the stock market will respond positively. Indeed, Sensex has rallied for two consecutive days following the three-day holiday for I-Day and the weekend. Modi, confident of India's economic outlook despite a 50% tariff imposed by US, highlighted that Delhi international airport is among the world's busiest and India's forex reserves remain high. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju told the media that the governing alliance warmly welcomed Radhakrishnan's introduction by PM Modi at the meeting. "NDA candidate Radhakrishnan was introduced at the meeting," he said. Hailing Radhakrishnan's nomination, Rijiju emphasised his clean record: "CPR is an excellent choice for vice president. Everyone has accepted this. There has been no controversy in his life, no corruption, no stain; he has lived a simple life, working only for society and the country. If such a person becomes VP, it will be a matter of great happiness for the nation".

Sunrise sectors battery, solar modules manufacturing lag in PLI application clearance; specialty steel & food products lead
The government has cleared 806 applications under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes that began in 2021 and incentive amounts to the tune of Rs 21,689 crore have been disbursed, resulting in investments worth Rs 1.90 lakh crore in the 14 PLI sectors, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said Tuesday. Data shared by the Ministry in a reply to a parliamentary question showed that applications from traditionally strong sectors such as food products and specialty steel saw the highest number of clearances, while sunrise sectors that require larger investments, such as Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries and high-efficiency solar PV modules, saw the least number of application clearances. Explaining the low disbursement figures, a government official told The Indian Express that the disbursements are low as several companies have not been able to meet the targets. 'The private sector has flagged that there is a lack of sufficient demand, which is the reason why they have not met targets,' the official said. 'The production, however, is happening, but they are not getting incentives as they have not reached the benchmark. The government is satisfied with investment and production figures but disbursements continue to be very low. But in one way, the objective of the government — to increase capacity and production — is being achieved,' the official said. The official pointed out that 'pricing pressure' in China is one of the key reasons why approvals in the ACC battery and high-efficiency solar PV modules segments are low. China has emerged as a leader in the EV sector and also controls much of the critical minerals crucial for the automobile industry. While the government has cleared only four battery manufacturing applications, the comparable number in the solar module sector stands at 14. Clearances in other sunrise sectors such as 'drones and drone components' also stood at 23, the Ministry's reply to a parliamentary question showed. On the contrary, sectors where India has been stronger have seen higher clearances. The government has cleared as many as 182 applications in the food products category, 109 in the specialty steel sector and 95 in the automobiles & auto components sector. Electronics manufacturing and technology product manufacturing, meanwhile, continued their strong performance in terms of production. Over 50 applications have received clearance, the data showed. The Ministry said that in the electronics sector, the production of mobiles in value terms has increased by around 146 per cent from Rs 2,13,773 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 5,25,000 crore in 2024-25. 'During the same period, exports of mobile phones in value terms have increased by around 775 per cent from Rs 22,870 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 2,00,000 crore in 2024-25,' the Ministry said. The Ministry said that PLI in the pharmaceuticals sector has also begun boosting production, resulting in cumulative sales of Rs 2.66 lakh crore, out of which exports worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore have been achieved in the first three years of the scheme. 'The scheme has contributed to India becoming a net exporter of bulk drugs (Rs 2,280 crore) from a net importer (-Rs 1,930 crore), as was the case in FY 2021-22. It has also resulted in a significant reduction in the gap between the domestic manufacturing capacity and demand for critical drugs,' the Ministry said. Under the PLI Scheme for medical devices, 21 projects have started manufacturing 54 unique medical devices, which include high-end devices such as Linear Accelerator (LINAC), MRI, CT-Scan, Heart Valve, Stent, Dialyser Machine, C-Arm, Cath Lab, Mammograph, MRI Coils, etc., the Ministry said. The government in 2021 had announced PLI schemes for 14 sectors with an outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore.
