Phil Steele joins Colin Cowherd, explains why he has Cade Klubnik winning the Heisman

USA Today19 hours ago
Colin Cowherd spent some time studying Cade Klubnik's tape this week, and it left him with a simple question.
'Is it possible that Cade Klubnik is the best quarterback in the sport this year?' Cowherd asked on his show.He brought in college football analyst Phil Steele for the discussion, and Steele made it clear he believes the Clemson star is primed for a huge season.
'I picked him to win the Heisman, Colin, and I'll tell you why,' Steele said. 'Two years ago, people questioned him with 19 touchdowns and nine picks. But last year, after getting back his injured receivers and adding a couple talented freshmen, he jumped to 36 touchdowns with just six interceptions.
'He's behind my No. 2 offensive line, he's throwing to my No. 2 receivers, and I've got Clemson winning all 12 games. I think Klubnik leads the nation in passing and brings home the Heisman this year.'
FanDuel currently lists Texas quarterback Arch Manning as the favorite (+750). Klubnik is tied at +900 with LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, who he'll face in Clemson's opener on August 30. Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith follows at +1200.
Clemson has never had a Heisman winner, though both Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence finished as runners-up during the program's Playoff run under Dabo Swinney.

Nebraska football in the mix for four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson

Nebraska football is making a firm push for class of 2027 four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson. This was reported by Rivals' Marcus Benjamin on Friday. Thompson is the No. 101 overall player in the 2027 class, the seventh overall defensive lineman in the class, and the ninth overall player from the state of Florida in his class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, and Syracuse are the schools that are standing out most in his recruitment. The Huskers have been in communication with Thompson quite a bit lately. Defensive line coach Terry Bradden has been the primary point of contact for the Huskers. Thompson had 66 tackles and four sacks in 15 games last season, per statistics from The Huskers could benefit from more talented defensive linemen, and Thompson certainly brings a strong skill set. Playing under Bradden could only help him further enhance his game. The program will have to work cut out for them in this recruitment. Blue Jays' ex-slugger Rowdy Tellez hit his former teammate with a pitch, and the reactions are priceless

Blue Jays' ex-slugger Rowdy Tellez hit his former teammate with a pitch, and the reactions are priceless originally appeared on The Sporting News Sometimes, the most priceless moments on a baseball field are the least expected. Take the closing stages of Texas Rangers at Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. The game was out of hand, in favor of the hosts up north. But there was still one fun moment to come. Rowdy Tellez, the hulking slugger that used to play for the Blue Jays, was on the mound, a position player handling mop-up duty. At the plate was George Springer, who used to be Rowdy's teammate. MORE: Juan Soto, Josh Naylor and Cal Raleigh are making stolen bases cool again Tellez plunked him. Look at these smiles: The pitch came in at such a tame pace that the radar gun apparently didn't even pick up its velocity. It's unlikely that it left a bruise, which helps make the whole moment laughable. MORE: Phillies' pitcher Matt Strahm has the funniest reason for investing in Pokemon cards No one wants to be in that spot. The position player doesn't want to pitch as a losing player in a blowout. The hitter doesn't necessarily want that at bat, because it's less competitive and it also feels embarrassing to make an out. But with bullpen rules and pitch count concerns, it's something that happens more and more in modern baseball. At least for the sake of this matchup, it created a moment of levity in a game that had long been over. Tellez and Springer will probably be able to laugh at this one together for a long time.
