United Airlines to offer service to Thailand, Vietnam in October
April 2 (UPI) -- United Airlines on Wednesday announced expanded service to Asia, becoming the only U.S. carrier with daily flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Bangkok, Thailand. The new service will begin on Oct. 26.
Flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco will travel to Hong Kong and then go to the new destinations. The flights will operate on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which typically has 257 seats in four classes.
More than 35 million international tourists visited Thailand in 2024, which is a 24.3% rise in one year. Meanwhile, Vietnam saw 17.5 million arrivals, which is a 39.5% gain.
United will offer flights from the United States to 32 different cities in the Pacific region -- four times that of any other U.S. carrier, the airline said.
"At United, we're changing the way people think about where they travel -- by offering the greatest access to see and explore the world, whether it's for relaxation, adventure or business," Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President, Global Network Planning and Alliances at United, said in a news release. "We offer more than the best schedule and travel options -- we connect customers to sought-after destinations and opportunities to explore new, vibrant cities."
Also starting Dec. 11, United will launch the first nonstop flights between the United States and Adelaide, Australia, in time for that continent's summer. The tri-weekly seasonal service on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will make United the leading carrier to Australia from the continental United States.
United also offers service to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
United will be adding a second daily flight between San Francisco and Manila starting Oct. 25. Travelers from both cities will have the option of a daytime or evening flight. United is the only U.S. airline to serve the Philippines -- with service in Manila and Cebu. The flights will be aboard a Boeing 777-300ER with 350 seats in four classes.
As the world's leading carrier across the Pacific, the airline served more than six million business and leisure passengers in the region last year.
In May, United will launch five new nonstop flights from its hub in Newark/New York to destinations: Nuuk, Greenland; Palermo, Italy; Bilbao, Spain; Madeira Island, Portugal and Faro, Portugal. The airline also is adding three new nonstop routes from Washington D.C./Dulles, including its first flight to Dakar, Senegal in West Africa, operating year-round, and new seasonal nonstop flights to Nice, France and Venice, Italy.
United, with more than 4,343 flights a day worldwide, also has hubs in Chicago, Denver and Houston.

Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Peter Welch, D-Vt., co-sponsored the bill that they have named the "Higher Wages for American Workers Act" and would increase the federal minimum wage from its current $7.25 per hour for non-exempt workers. "For decades, working Americans have seen their wages flatline," Hawley said on Tuesday in a joint press release with Welch. "One major culprit of this is the failure of the federal minimum wage to keep up with the economic reality facing hardworking Americans every day," Hawley added. Welch said inflation and rising costs are making it too hard for families to afford basic necessities. "We're in the midst of a severe affordability crisis, with families in red and blue states alike struggling to afford necessities like housing and groceries," Welch said. "A stagnant federal minimum wage only adds fuel to the fire," he continued. "Every hardworking American deserves a living wage that helps put a roof over their head and food on the table -- $7.25 an hour doesn't even come close." "Times have changed, and working families deserve a wage that reflects today's financial reality," Welch added. Hawley said the current federal minimum wage is less than what a worker earned in 1940 when adjusted for inflation. If the proposed federal minimum wage increase is passed into law, it would take effect on Jan. 1 and allow cost-of-living increases that match inflation in subsequent years. Many states have respective minimum wage laws that exceed the current and proposed federal minimum wage, but a dozen still were at the federal minimum wage in 2024. Many large employers also have higher minimum wages, including Walmart, which has paid its workers at least $14 an hour and often more since 2023. President Joe Biden in 2021 ordered the federal government to pay contract workers at least $15 an hour. California lawmakers in 2022 raised the state's minimum wage for many fast-food workers to up to $22 an hour.

Bernstein sees little risk related to global airline profitability
-- Bernstein said it sees minimal risk to global airline profitability, supported by strong traffic trends, a tight delivery pipeline from aircraft manufacturers, and sustained demand in the engine aftermarket. Both original equipment (OE) production and aftermarket services are set for growth. Airline traffic remains solid globally, particularly in Asia-Pacific ex-China, with available seat kilometer (ASK) growth of 5-6% this year expected to absorb most aircraft deliveries through 2026. Operating profits were better year-on-year for most North American and Asian carriers in Q4 and Q1, according to Bernstein, adding that while European low-cost carriers were weaker in Q1, there is no reason for concern, especially with heavy maintenance backlogs at MRO shops. The analyst sees strong demand outpacing supply at Airbus and Boeing (NYSE:BA), constrained by production challenges including supply chain issues and prior shutdowns on models such as the 737 MAX and 787. Boeing is seen to have more near-term upside due to its recovery trajectory, while Airbus faces pressure to meet second-half 2025 delivery targets for the A320 and A350. In the engine aftermarket, high utilization rates for CFM56 and V2500 engines are driving demand for life extensions and spares. Despite over 600 A320 family aircraft with grounded Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, Bernstein expects capacity constraints to ease as more repair shops come online. The firm also flagged that large Airbus orders, particularly from China, could be announced at the upcoming Air Show, while the focus for Boeing will be on its progress in production recovery. Overall, Bernstein remains constructive on the commercial aerospace cycle, citing robust fundamentals across OE, aftermarket, and airline profitability. Dale Moss, Lexi Young among 'Bachelor in Paradise' Season 10 cast

Dale Moss, who became engaged to Season 16 Bachelorette Clare Crawley, is among the singles looking for love in Costa Rica. "I'm really head down with travel and work and projects and things like that," he told Us Weekly. "But I definitely realized that there's more out there and sometimes you have to remove yourself from certain situations to get more clarity on that." A reel featuring the incoming singles was posted to the reality television show's official Instagram account Tuesday. "I may have caught footballs for a living, but catching hearts -- that's a natural talent," Moss says in that clip. The series follows "fan favorites from The Bachelor franchise" as they mingle and date one another. Other cast members include Jeremy Simon, Jonathan Johnson, Alexe-Anne Godin, Bailey Brown, Brian Autz, Hakeem Moulton, Jessica Edwards, Justin Glaze, Katherine Izzo, Kyle Howard, Lexi Young, Riquerdy Marinez, Sam McKinney, Spencer Conley and Zoe McGrady.
