Kapolei softball's Saito set to play for Team USA

Yahoo29-01-2025

Fourteen-year-old Skyla Marie Saito is set to represent her home state and country on one of the biggest stages in youth softball.
The Kapolei High School freshman was recently named to the USA Softball 15-and-Under National Team, earning a coveted spot among 16 players from across the nation.
The Ewa Beach native will don the red, white, and blue at the upcoming Pan American Championship in Acapulco, Mexico, and later at the WBSC World Cup in Italy. For Saito, the honor is both humbling and thrilling.
'I get to represent Hawai'i—that's a big thing for me,' Saito said. 'We're small, so getting to represent this very small state means a lot. And overall, representing USA internationally—it's crazy to be one of the few people to do it.'
Saito credits her teammates and mentors for pushing her to new heights in the sport she loves.
'All my teammates have made me want to be better, especially working with my upperclassmen. They've really pushed me to improve,' she said.
A catcher with a powerful bat, Saito plays club softball with Hana Pa'a while balancing her freshman year at Kapolei. She sees the game as more than just a sport—it's a lifelong teacher.
'Softball is basically my life,' she said. 'It's taught me so many life lessons—how to work with others and adapt to different situations. I'm really excited to see these new places and play with people I've never seen before. But honestly, I'm also a little scared about how it's all going to turn out.'
Saito and Team USA will first take the field at the Pan American Championship, set for March 19-26 in Acapulco, Mexico. Following that, the squad will compete in the WBSC World Cup from June 27 to July 5 in Italy, where they will take on some of the top young talent in the world.

Ohio State, other teams to be compensated based on game usage in 'College Football 26'

Ohio State, other teams to be compensated based on game usage in 'College Football 26' Not only is the game of college football undergoing seismic changes, but so too, apparently, is the popular EA Sports college football franchise. The game came back from a major ten-year hiatus last year with the release of "College Football 25." You can thank Name, Image and Likeness, and the ability to compensate individual players for the inclusion in the game for the renaissance, and we all celebrated. Now, as things evolve, it appears as though schools will be paid differently for their participation in "College Football 26." Players were already compensated last season and will continue to be so with an elevated amount this season. But for this year, teams won't get a fee based on tier levels from the AP's Top 25 poll, but instead the pay will be tied to how often each of the 136 teams in the game is used, at least according to a report from Matt Liberman. The next iteration of the game is set to be released on July 10, and if those reports are true, Ohio State should benefit greatly. Though raw numbers aren't available, the Buckeyes have arguably the biggest and most followed fanbase in the sport, and there's no doubt that there's a lot of Scarlet and Gray on video game screens across the video game universe. 'For each CFB product released by EA SPORTS, we (CLC Learfield) will provide a percentage for each institution based on the games played for that institution as a percentage of the total games played across all institutions," a document obtained by Liberman stated. "This percentage of games played will become the final allocation percentage for each school that will be applied to the total gross royalties for all institutions received.' If you are like us, you can't wait to get your chance to play college football again on an Xbox Series X/S or a Playstation 5. Just remember to use Ohio State so the school maxes out its royalties for the game. I mean, every little bit helps, right? HBCU National Championship thriving under revamped schedule

The stage is set for the 10th edition of the HBCU national championship game-better known as the Celebration Bowl-and fans no longer have to wait to book their hotels. ESPN has announced that the official date and time of the 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl will be Saturday, December 13, 2025, at noon ET, live on ABC. The Celebration Bowl, which pits the champions of the MEAC and SWAC against one another, has become the definitive showdown for HBCU football supremacy. And last year's edition delivered in a big way, both on the field and in living rooms across the country. In 2024, the Celebration Bowl marked its first appearance under the newly revamped College Football Playoff schedule. The change shifted the game up by a week, creating ripple effects that sparked debate within the HBCU football world. Critics pointed out that the MEAC champion had a built-in advantage-an additional two weeks to prepare. The SWAC champion had to turn around and play immediately after their conference championship. Still, none of that mattered once the pads started popping. Jackson State, fresh off their SWAC title, steamrolled South Carolina State in a 28-7 statement win to capture their first Celebration Bowl crown. The Tigers also became the second straight SWAC program to hoist the trophy. Flipping a script long dominated by MEAC programs. Off the field, the numbers told a success story of their own. The 2024 Celebration Bowl pulled in 2.1 million viewers on ABC. That number was up 37% from the previous year's 1.5 million audience, according to ESPN. Much of that spike can be credited to the strategic time slot. The noon ET kickoff faced virtually no competition from other college bowl games or NFL matchups. A luxury not afforded in previous years, when scheduling overlap diluted viewership. Attendance for the HBCU national championship has also remained solid, with over 40,000 fans packing Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the 2024 edition. That kind of turnout, paired with rising TV numbers, shows that the Celebration Bowl isn't just surviving in the ever-changing college football landscape, it's thriving. As anticipation builds for the 2025 reveal, one thing is clear. The Celebration Bowl has firmly cemented itself as the crown jewel of HBCU football. And with year 10 on the horizon, all eyes will be on what's next. The post HBCU National Championship thriving under revamped schedule appeared first on HBCU Gameday.
