Govt. slammed for last-minute scrapping of Friday's Bakrid holiday
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and several Muslim organisations have protested against the government decision to revoke the Bakrid holiday on Friday. The government has shifted the holiday to Saturday as Muslims in the State are celebrating Bakrid on Saturday.
IUML State general secretary P.M.A. Salam has demanded that the government declare a separate holiday on Saturday rather than scrapping the previously announced holiday on Friday.
Mr. Salam pointed out that Friday would be of significance too, as Muslims celebrating Bakrid on Saturday would be fasting on Friday, making it essential to retain the holiday on both days.
IUML district president Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president A.P. Anil Kumar too demanded that the government change its decision to revoke Friday's holiday.
Wisdom Islamic Organisation general secretary T.K. Ashraf too criticised the government move saying that it would put many professionals in difficulty.
'We have been demanding at least three days holidays for two Id celebrations. If not possible, at least having two days off will allow those working in distant districts to travel home, celebrate Id and return to work,' he said.
Mr. Ashraf expressed concerns that the government's last-minute decision to revoke the declared holiday on Friday would be seen as disregard for the Muslim community's celebrations, particularly since it is the day of the significant Arafa fast.

Dakshina Kannada crackdown: Keep politics out
Two back-to-back murders in Dakshina Kannada, each laced with communal undertones, have finally jolted the government to action. Police officers are now cracking down on lumpen elements across communities – a much-needed move to restore order. The government has rightly overhauled the police top brass in Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Udupi, signalling a firm resolve to address the escalating communal tensions. But even as law enforcement begins to act decisively, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje has chosen a troubling path. She has written to Justice N K Sudhindra Rao, chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, alleging police harassment of 'innocent' Hindu activists. A copy of the letter has also been marked to the National Human Rights fact finding committee on DK murders to submit interim report next complaint is both misplaced and misleading. As a constitutional authority, she should stand by the law, not those who flout it. The police have been doing their duty in a district teetering on the edge. Her letter, devoid of specifics, amounts to a blatant interference in the enforcement of law and order. The claim that GPS tracking is being used to target Hindutva activists holds no water – modern technology tools are legitimate instruments to track criminal suspects irrespective of their religious identity. Who exactly are these 'innocent' people she wants to shield? Many are known offenders. For instance, Suhas Shetty whose recent murder sparked outrage was a rowdy sheeter with two murder charges against him, all booked when BJP was in power. Karandlaje's portrayal of police action as one-sided is factually incorrect. The list of anti-social elements who the police propose to extern from the district includes those from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Such interference from a union minister not only undermines the police action to restore peace but also sends dangerous signals that political patronage can shield anti-social elements from the due process of law. The Prime Minister should take serious note of Minister seeks PCA, NHRC intervention over 'targeting' of Hindutva groups in Dakshina police must be allowed to continue their operations unhindered. They should act even against those occupying top positions if they engage in hate speech or incite violence. Politicians who poison the minds of the youth and use them as pawns for narrow electoral gains, while their children study abroad, should be held accountable. The state government must back the police not just with moral support, but with robust legal resources that ensure that these criminals don't get a reprieve from the court. The coastal districts need healing and that will happen only when politicians stop stoking fires, and allow the law to take its course.

TISS asks pro-VC to step down after charges of ‘irregularities'
Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has asked its pro-vice-chancellor Prof Shankar Das to step down. While the official order only mentioned that he is relieved from the charge with immediate effect "upon the approval of the competent authority," sources claimed there were allegations of financial misappropriation and irregularities in appointments of project staff against Das, report Yogita Rao & Hemali Chhapia. Das, who has been in the running for the VC post at TISS claimed "the allegations are baseless" and "a targeted attempt to malign" his reputation. He held interim charge as VC of Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, Pune, for the last 8 months. A complaint was filed against TISS pro-vice-chancellor Prof Shankar Das with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), and a subsequent probe by an internal committee prompted the institute to ask him to step down, sources said. Das said he is deeply pained and shocked by the charges. "The institution gave me a clearance report on Nov 29, 2024, for the interview for the vice-chancellor's post on Dec 15, 2024. So, getting this order at this point is shocking for me," he said. Das has held interim charge as vice-chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, for the last eight months. He has been associated with the School of Health Systems Studies at TISS for a long time. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Sources said the allegations against Das were about fraudulent bills produced for project work and also irregularities in staff appointments for projects. "Preliminary investigations by an internal panel suggested there was substance in the allegations," said a source, adding there has been growing resentment regarding the "high-handed manner" in which he managed issues at the institute. Das, however, said all the expenses at TISS, a Central university, are accounted for. "In all these years, my record has remained unblemished. I have consistently upheld the highest standards of integrity and commitment… After having served this institution with utmost sincerity and dedication for 35 years — as a student, faculty member and pro-vice-chancellor — this comes as a grave personal and professional affront. The timing and nature of these allegations, especially in the absence of a sitting VC for the past two years, raises serious concerns. This is a critical phase of my career… To be subjected to such defamation at this juncture is deeply distressing, not only for me but also for my family and those who have known my journey," he said, adding he had full faith the truth will emerge. He also "respectfully" urged everyone to refrain from drawing premature conclusions. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Chennai: Former judge of Madras high court , Justice M S Janarthanam, known for his work on the reservation front and who had studied and recommended a 3% internal reservation for arunthathiyars among the Scheduled Castes, passed away on Friday. He was 89. Justice Janarthanam served in the high court from 1988 to 1998. He was appointed Tamil Nadu Backward Class Commission chairman in 2006 and served in that role until 2015. Chief minister M K Stalin said Justice Janarthanam would be accorded state honours and that he would personally attend the last rites, in recognition of the judge's contribution to social justice. "It was based on his recommendation that reservation was implemented for Muslims, Christians, and arunthathiyars in Tamil Nadu," Stalin said in a condolence message. Justice Janarthanam headed the state commission for backward classes and also was the one-man commission constituted by then chief minister, M Karunanidhi, to study the educational, social, and economic backwardness of the arunthathiyar community, which was part of the Scheduled Caste category. In Aug 2024, a seven-judge bench of Supreme Court, headed by then Chief Justice of India, Justice D Y Chandrachud, upheld the validity of the Tamil Nadu Arunthathiyars Reservation Act, 2009. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Tome isso 1x ao dia se tem mais de 40 anos Portal Saúde do Homem Clique aqui Undo The Tamil Nadu govt had passed the Act based on the recommendation of the commission headed by Justice Janarthanam, providing a 3% internal reservation to the arunthathiyar community within the 18% quota provided for the Scheduled Caste in 2008. The Act brought together seven scheduled castes (SCs) — arunthathiyar, chakkiliyar, madari, madiga, pagadai, thoti, and adi andhra — as arunthathiyars for the sake of reservation on a preferential basis. Justice Janarthanam also served as president of the Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. "He was a firm but gentle human being. I have been associated with him since he was a registrar in Madras high court before his elevation as a judge of the court. His demise is a loss to the legal fraternity," advocate-general P S Raman said. Describing him as a shining example of the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said Justice Janarthanam recommended a 10.5% reservation for vanniyars. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said: "The passing of such a figure is a great loss to both the judiciary and democratic movements fighting for social justice."
