Eid-ul-Zuha 2025: Schools, Colleges In Kerala To Remain Closed On June 7
The Kerala government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the state on Friday and Saturday (June 7) in view of Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid). However, government offices will remain open on Friday, as the official public holiday has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 7, in accordance with the revised festival date. The holiday was earlier set for June 6 but had to be postponed after the moon was not sighted in time, causing the observance of the festival by a day. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state general secretary PMA Salam said the decision to grant a holiday to educational institutions on Friday came after strong public opposition. "The government gave in to public pressure. Instead of announcing a general holiday for all government institutions, it restricted the leave to educational institutions. Government offices should have been included," he said. In a Facebook post, he added, "The cancellation of the previously declared Eid holiday led to protests. The Muslim League demanded that Friday be declared a holiday for all government offices, not just educational institutions." Central Govt Offices In Kerala To Remain Closed On Saturday Central government offices in Kerala will also remain shut on Saturday, June 7, following the state government's revised directive. However, they remain open on Friday.

Holiday for educational institutions on June 6
The State government has declared a holiday for educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Friday. A press release issued by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's Office did not assign any reason for the decision. However, it came in the wake of Indian Union Muslim League and Congress demanding that the government reinstate the Bakrid Holiday marked in the administration annual calendar on Friday. The government had shifted the Bakrid holiday to June 7, adhering to the Islamic religious calendar. It declared that June 7 (Saturday) will be a holiday for all government offices in Kerala, including all Public Sector Undertakings, all educational institutions, including professional colleges under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

Govt. slammed for last-minute scrapping of Friday's Bakrid holiday
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and several Muslim organisations have protested against the government decision to revoke the Bakrid holiday on Friday. The government has shifted the holiday to Saturday as Muslims in the State are celebrating Bakrid on Saturday. IUML State general secretary P.M.A. Salam has demanded that the government declare a separate holiday on Saturday rather than scrapping the previously announced holiday on Friday. Mr. Salam pointed out that Friday would be of significance too, as Muslims celebrating Bakrid on Saturday would be fasting on Friday, making it essential to retain the holiday on both days. IUML district president Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president A.P. Anil Kumar too demanded that the government change its decision to revoke Friday's holiday. Wisdom Islamic Organisation general secretary T.K. Ashraf too criticised the government move saying that it would put many professionals in difficulty. 'We have been demanding at least three days holidays for two Id celebrations. If not possible, at least having two days off will allow those working in distant districts to travel home, celebrate Id and return to work,' he said. Mr. Ashraf expressed concerns that the government's last-minute decision to revoke the declared holiday on Friday would be seen as disregard for the Muslim community's celebrations, particularly since it is the day of the significant Arafa fast.

Kerala govt revises Bakrid holiday to June 7, faces backlash over cutback
The Kerala government on Thursday announced that Saturday, June 7, will be a public holiday in observance of Bakrid, following reports that the festival will be celebrated across the state on that day. Earlier, the government had declared Friday, June 6, as the holiday for Bakrid. However, with the festival falling a day later, authorities have revised the decision. As a result, June 6 (Friday) will now be a regular working day. The updated holiday on June 7 will apply to all government offices, public sector undertakings, educational institutions including professional colleges, and institutions governed by the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, the government order said. Officials said the change was made to ensure the holiday aligns with the actual date of celebration observed by the people. The Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the student wing of the Indian Union Muslim League, criticised the Kerala government for cutting the Bakrid public-holiday period to a single day. In a Facebook post, MSF state president P K Navas called the move "extremely shameful" and urged the government to reverse it. "Kerala has always treated every community's festival as a festival for all," Navas wrote. "If you cannot protect us, at least do not harass us; if you cannot give, do not take away," he said.
