My cultural awakening: a punk band told me quit drinking. So I did

The Guardian24-05-2025
I started drinking when I was 14. It was how we'd have fun as kids in Aberdeen – I didn't come across any youth clubs or anything particularly productive. You drank beer or alcopops in some shady lane, and you drank so quickly that you'd get drunk but then be sober enough to get home at 11pm so your parents wouldn't notice anything. It wasn't drinking for pleasure: binge drinking was just what everyone – regardless of social groups – seemed to be doing.
During my teenage years I worked at a newsagent and I would read Kerrang! every week, which was extremely formative for me in discovering music. It's incredible how many new bands I was introduced to, and just how my music taste evolved – from nu-metal bands such as Korn to Rage Against the Machine and, most influentially, Fugazi.
One day in 1999, when I was 16, I read about the hardcore punk band Minor Threat. Ian MacKaye, a member of Fugazi, was an important figure for me: he had a very specific way of approaching music and was fiercely independent. I was inspired by him, shaving my hair and wearing a beanie. A friend even started calling me Bain MacKaye. His previous band, Minor Threat, were active in the early 80s and had been part of what became known as the 'straight edge' movement, a subculture of hardcore punks who turned away from drugs and alcohol in reaction to punk's excesses.
In Minor Threat's song Out of Step, MacKaye sings lyrics such as 'I don't drink', but he shortens it to 'don't drink', so it sounds more like he's telling you to do the same, which to some degree he is. It wasn't so much the music itself that grabbed me, it was more that I became interested in this perspective of questioning the mainstream.
I wasn't particularly rebellious: I didn't talk back to teachers or have a problem with my parents. So the concept of being straight edge and not taking drugs or drinking seemed like the most radical thing I could do in a middle-class environment.
To begin with, not drinking was just experimental, then it became a challenge. With time, I started to see the good in it. You never know how you're going to react under stress or grief, and from an early age I had just ruled out drinking as a way to deal with these things. I had also developed an ability to speak my mind or just have the balls to speak to new people sober, not needing something to help ease social anxieties.
I was the odd one out among my friends. They'd wonder why I was doing it and probably made fun of me, but I was never excommunicated from my circle. Still, when I went to university in around 2003, one guy said to me: 'You shouldn't come inside a pub if you're not ready to drink and smoke in it'. People would often ask me if I was religious or if there were alcohol problems in my family. There always had to be a reason, like it wasn't a choice to be sober. That's what was so appealing – it just seemed so radical to be sober. And I have been ever since. It is largely a force of habit nowadays, not the teenage rebellion I felt back then, though I do still listen to Minor Threat from time to time.
Sobriety has given me a very different experience in life. At university I spent a lot of time with foreign students who were slightly older than me. Alcohol was still a part of their social circle but in a more sophisticated way. That group included the person who became my wife. I now live with her in Finland, where I work as a lab technician. In Finland the phrase straight edge, or streittari, is well known to describe the lifestyle of those who don't drink or do drugs, but not many people know its roots – an 80s hardcore punk band.

Love Island's Cach reveals Toni is ‘struggling' with fame after winning show and sparks concern about their future

LOVE Island star Cach Mercer has revealed Toni Laites is finding fame overwhelming as he admitted she'll eventually go back to America. The dancer spoke on the Old & Bald podcast after the couple scooped the £50k prize earlier this month. 6 6 6 6 Cach said that former Las Vegas waitress Toni is being mobbed everywhere she goes and is struggling with the attention from young fans, after viewers were gripped by her rocky love story in the ITV2 villa. Cach said he has been keeping a close eye on her every day. However, one comment has sparked that Toni could be heading back to America soon, leaving question marks over their blossoming relationship. Asked how things are outside of the villa, Cach said: "It's going well, I feel like feelings are strong as they were in the villa. "I've been spending every day with her since obviously she's here by herself, so making sure she's OK and stuff. "But she's struggling a bit with the attention aspect. "Because before she worked a normal job, and had no followig, she's never had this amount of attention in her life. "I've let her know that we've just come off one of the biggest shows in the UK and everybody in the UK watches it." Cach added: "Once she goes back to America I don't think it will be that bad ... it will be more like she can breath. "Like we went shopping the other day and she gets swarmed by the little girls like people calling her 'icon'. Cach and Toni WIN Love Island and bag £50k as raunchiest ever series ends "She loves it as well but when she comes away from it she deeps it and gets overwhelmed, like not being able to do shopping. "She'll get used to it and I feel like it won't be this tense for too long." Best pals Shakira and Toni battled it out to win Love Island with their partners Harry and Cach. Toni was the show's first American bombshell and fans loved her rollercoaster journey on the show. Just a few weeks before the final, Toni split from Cach to rekindle with her old flame Harrison - not knowing he had been intimate with Casa Amor's Lauren. After just one day, he U-turned yet again - and ended up leaving the villa when Lauren was voted out. Despite Cach breaking down in tears over the embarrassment of his public split from Toni, he forgave her. They started up their relationship once again and on their final night in the villa said "I love you". 6 6

Emmerdale star left stumped in difficult Celebrity Catchphrase final – could you outsmart her and work them out?

AN Emmerdale star was left flummoxed in a difficult Celebrity Catchphrase final - but could you solve the tricky riddles? Rebecca Sarker, who plays Manpreet Sharma, struggled to decipher some cryptic puzzles. 5 5 The actress, 50, had competed against Jordan Stephens and Les Dennis. While ascending the Super Catchphrase pyramid, Rebecca faced three difficult riddles. The first depicted the Mr. Chips character writing at a desk, with piles of paper on either side. Rebecca guessed "letter of the law" and "pencil" - but the answer turned out to be "Paper Cut". The next one showed a woman looking at a menu, pointing at the starters. Figures depicted bowls of soup which had days of the week written on them. Rebecca took a stab at "Tuesday starter" and "daily starter", among others before passing. She was later left kicking herself when the answer was revealed as "Soup Of The Day". With only seconds remaining, Rebecca moved on to another puzzle - but only saw it briefly. It featured a woman and child making sand castles together on a beach. Emmerdale's Joe Absolom wins huge jackpot with seconds to spare on Celebrity Catchphrase - but did you get it before him? Rebecca just barely saw butterflies with watches in the centre appear on screen. These represented the answer - commonly-used turn of phrase, "Time Flies". Having answered earlier puzzles correctly, Rebecca walked away with a combined £8,400 for her charity - which included her fund banked earlier. Emmerdale co-star, Joe Absolom had a very different outcome on the ITV show. The soap star, 46, had just seconds left to work out the crucial jackpot puzzle. Joe made light work of the pyramid - with 29 seconds remaining to answer the £50,000 Catchphrase. After deliberation - and only four seconds left - the actor correctly answered "One stop shop." It meant Joe scooped £50,000 for his charity - as well as £6,700 he won in earlier rounds. Host Stephen Mulhern said: "Do you know what, that is incredible. Wow, I have never seen it done like that." Joe then revealed he couldn't wait to share the good news with his charity. He joined the Emmerdale cast this year, playing shady new bad guy Ray Walters. 5 5
