Residents stop road work in Korattur, demand civic agencies fix sewage issues
In a bid to prevent overflow of sewage on the roads, residents in various wards have demanded GCC to identify land for construction of sewage pumping stations by CMWSSB, expedite the ongoing work, improve sewage treatment infrastructure and prevent frequent burst of sewer pipelines. After GCC officials started milling work of Korattur Station Road this week, residents stopped the road relaying work, demanding officials to resolve the issue of overflow of sewage on the road before relaying the road. AIADMK councillor said the sewage pipeline burst ten times in the past few months on Station Road leading to overflow of sewage. 'Residents have requested measures to resolve the issue of sewage pipelines bursting at frequent intervals. The residents want diversion of sewage pumping to Kodungaiyur Treatment Plant instead of Koyambedu Treatment Plant or an improvement in pumping stations. If the GCC relayed the road without resolving the issue, they will have to cut the road again in a few days to resolve the sewage issue,' he said. MDMK councillor said the residents have complained about overflow of sewage, causing public health issues for children of Karimedu Colony, First Street, Residents of ward 55 have complained on social media that the sewage was overflowing on Mangammal Street, polluting the storm water drain of Chennai Corporation. president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Accociations, said the added zones of north Chennai need more sewage pumping stations and facilities for treatment of sewage and improved septage management. TN Govt Collects 300 MT Waste from Govt Offices in Special Drive
Status: cleared Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt on Thursday collected over 300 metric tonnes of waste from 1,100 govt offices across the state, including the state secretariat. The initiative, launched under the "Thooimai Iyakkam" (Cleanliness Movement), coincided with World Environment Day on June 5 and marks the beginning of a larger, phased campaign. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Special programme implementation department minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said the initiative was kicked off in all 38 districts. "We have created a war room in GCC's headquarters to monitor the activities," he said, adding that the drive will also expand to colleges, hospitals, and schools in the next ten days. The drive was spearheaded by the newly established Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL), which aims to streamline the collection, recycling, and reuse of waste across state departments. Offices of district collectors, corporations, municipalities, panchayat unions, and various other departments participated in the effort, handing over pre-segregated waste including plastics, e-waste, metals, paper, glass, and unusable furniture. Udhayanidhi said the initiative must be a long-term one, seeking support from members of the public. Officials said all collected waste will be processed in the composting centres and will either be recycled or reused. The special projects department has also released guidelines to all govt offices to carry out cleaning drives every week and segregate the waste. Udhayanidhi said measures to improve the initiative, including funding, will be discussed. Earlier this week, the govt released a video on solid waste management awareness featuring actor Yogi Babu on waste segregation and disposal. MSID:: 121652283 413 |

Vyasarpadi to get sensory park for disabled kids
Chennai: Children with disabilities will soon have an inclusive space to play and learn at Vyasarpadi — a first in North Chennai. GCC will build a new sensory park zone at a cost of 1.29 crore. Residents of North Chennai have welcomed the move, saying it will offer recreational and developmental support for children with special needs in the area. "The park will offer various forms of training, including speech therapy and occupational therapy. In addition to recreation, the focus will be on sensory development, with learning sessions for kids," said ward 44 councillor Sarbajaya Das. A team had discussions with consultants regarding the design for children with special needs, he said. "We came to know that parents are often forced to spend at least 500 to 1,000 per therapy session for children with ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Many cannot afford this. This park will help ease that financial burden by offering essential therapies at no or minimal cost," Sarbajaya said. The park will come up on Kamaraj Street in Vyasarpadi and work is expected to commence by the end of June. The corporation has also decided to install lifts, so parents don't have to carry their children to the second floor. Parents will be allowed to accompany their children during training and therapy sessions. The ward councillor, along with zonal-level officials, has planned awareness campaigns across North Chennai to inform residents about the new park. "Residents must be made aware of the park," said R Boopalan, a resident of Tondiarpet.
