Zverev to meet Khachanov in ATP Toronto semi-finals

TORONTON: Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semi-final on Monday by ending the Canadian title defence of Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP Toronto Masters. The final game, with Zverev serving at 5-3, was interrupted by shouts from an unruly fan who was tossed out by security. The distraction ended a run of 14 consecutive points on serve, with the seed double-faulting once he was able to continue serving. He finished off the evening with a sharp volley winner at the net on his first match point. Zverev completed his 40th win of the year in just over two and a half hours. The world number three won the tournament in 2017 but had not been past the quarter-finals in Canada since. "After losing the first set, I had to tell myself we were both playing well," the holder of seven Masters trophies said. "I had one or two mistakes at the end of the first, but it was a high-level match. "I felt that if I kept playing well, I would get my chances – and I did. I can't complain about the second and third sets." Zverev will bid for the oddly scheduled Thursday final against three-time semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, who dismissed young American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). "It was a very close, competitive match," Khachanov said. "I had to come back from some tough situations. "How you handle that mentally is important. I was glad to close it out in the second set. "I had to try and not give him the opportunity to step in and attack; that's what I did today." Zverev has won five of the seven matches he has played against Khachanov. Popyrin and Zverev duelled throughout the evenly matched 71-minute opening set as it went into a tiebreaker. Zverev was unable to convert on two winning chances, but Popyrin came good on his own second opportunity with a net cord winner that caught his opponent stranded at the baseline. The German began to turn the tables in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead only to see the Aussie level at 4-all. Zverev pulled away to level the match at a set apiece, breaking for 6-4 as Popyrin sent a volley wide. The top seed began the final set with a 3-0 lead on his way into the tournament final four at the pre-US Open event.

Young bowling star Qurratu'Ain balances studies and sports with grit

SINCE joining Malaysia's national bowling squad in January, Qurratu'Ain Izdihar Mohd Pozi has navigated a demanding schedule—balancing rigorous training, academic commitments, and podium expectations. The 17-year-old recently returned from the Asian Under-18 Junior Bowling Championships in Doha with five gold medals, marking her career-best performance. 'Alhamdulillah, I'm very grateful and can't believe I managed to win five out of Malaysia's seven gold medals because all the events were tough. But with the help of my coaches, I stayed consistent and focused on my game. My family also always supports me,' she shared upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Preparing for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) trials while competing internationally added pressure, but Qurratu'Ain remained steadfast. Post-tournament, she aims to refocus on academics while maintaining her training regimen. The Selangor athlete and her teammates underwent intensive four-hour daily sessions for two weeks before the championships to build endurance. 'For me, the most difficult part is balancing studies and tournaments because it's currently trial exam season,' she admitted. Though hopeful for SEA Games 2025 selection, Qurratu'Ain's immediate goal is the Asian Youth Championships at Sunway Megalanes later this month. 'I hope to be selected for the SEA Games, but for now, the focus is on training. Insya-Allah, if possible, I want more gold,' she said. Malaysia dominated the Doha event with seven golds, one silver, and five bronzes—its best performance in the tournament's history. - Bernama

De Minaur battles past Tiafoe into Toronto Masters quarter-finals

ALEX de Minaur continued his strong form by defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The Australian, fresh off his Washington title win, extended his winning streak to seven matches in a gruelling encounter lasting just under two and a half hours. De Minaur, the ninth seed, will next face the winner of the match between Italian Flavio Cobolli and American fourth seed Ben Shelton. Despite the victory, the Australian voiced concerns over the new 12-day Masters schedule, which has disrupted player routines. 'I didn't enjoy having so much time off. The body is used to going and going,' he said. The match saw nearly 50 unforced errors from Tiafoe, with De Minaur overcoming a mid-match slump in the second set. 'It was never gonna be easy. He's got the ability to switch it on whenever he wants,' De Minaur admitted. 'I was just happy to sneak away with this win.' Meanwhile, sixth seed Andrey Rublev secured his 14th Masters quarter-final after Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/2), 3-0 due to possible cramping. Rublev, last year's runner-up in Montreal, will face either Jiri Lehecka or Taylor Fritz next. - AFP
