Coca-Cola (KO) Raises 2025 Profit Forecast
The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) reported its second quarter 2025 results on July 22nd, delivering 5% organic revenue growth, 4% year-over-year comparable earnings per share growth, and continued robust comparable margin expansion, despite a 1% decline in volume amid currency headwinds. Management raised full-year 2025 comparable currency-neutral EPS growth guidance to about 8% and underscored strong operational agility, market-specific pivots, disciplined reinvestment, and tangible advances in productivity as key drivers of performance. The following insights address strategic execution, margin durability, and portfolio innovation that underpin the company's long-term investment thesis. Margin expansion drives KO's profit growth Comparable operating margin expanded by 190 basis points year-over-year, driven by a combination of productivity initiatives, favorable investment timing, and cycling effects. Margin resilience persisted even as volume growth turned negative 1% year-over-year, juxtaposed with solid performance in developed markets and pockets of emerging market weakness. "Comparable gross margin increased approximately 80 basis points, and comparable operating margin increased approximately 190 basis points. Both were driven by underlying expansion, partially offset by currency headwinds. Approximately one-third of our underlying expansion was driven by faster realization of our productivity initiatives, while the rest was driven by timing of investments and favorable cycling versus the prior year." -- John Murphy, President and Chief Financial Officer This sustained margin expansion highlights structural cost discipline and operational leverage, supporting earnings momentum even in a mixed volume environment where pricing power and productivity offset input pressures. Strategic pivots sustain KO top-line algorithm KO achieved seventeen consecutive quarters of global value share gains, with 5% organic revenue growth (non-GAAP) and sequential improvements in key developed markets. Management emphasized the need for rapid, data-driven adjustments at both geographic and channel levels, as illustrated by accelerated marketing and value initiatives targeting Mexico, India, and underperforming emerging markets following weather and geopolitical headwinds. "We got hit by an early monsoon in India, which is the important selling season, plus the India-Pakistan conflict, brief as it was, plus weather in Mexico, which required us to pivot to bring back growth in those parts of the world coming into the second half. So it's really, if you like, about the need for the all-weather strategy, to be taken up another notch in terms of how fast you can pivot and execute to still deliver the results that we're delivering." -- James Quincey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer This operational agility enhances KO's ability to defend its growth algorithm, mitigating externally driven volatility and reinforcing its leadership via tailored price-pack architecture and marketing that restore brand momentum across regions. Portfolio innovation and capacity gains unlock future growth The Fairlife brand sustained double-digit volume growth, albeit at moderating rates in the second half of 2025, due to pronounced U.S. production bottlenecks; the expansion of the New York facility in early 2026 will relieve capacity constraints. At the same time, KO's $30 billion-brand portfolio and disciplined innovation pipeline (e.g. Sprite Plus Tea, U.S. cane sugar Coca-Cola) address evolving consumer preferences, while ongoing international expansion targets differentiated value-added dairy opportunities. "Firstly, Fairlife continues to have strong growth. Double-digit volume growth in the second quarter. The New York facility will come online at the beginning of 2026, obviously. That doesn't all turn on with a flick of the switch on day one, and that will ramp up over 2026, but it will steadily debottleneck our constraints on capacity across all the different Fairlife variants and package sizes. Secondly, as it relates to international, having made some investments in dairy which were unhappy in small countries and with small investments, it is worth pointing out that Santa Clara in Mexico also had a strong performance. It's now the number one value-added dairy business in Mexico." -- James Quincey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Capacity expansion and innovation ensure that KO captures share in high-growth premium categories, extending its competitive moat beyond traditional CSDs (carbonated soft drinks). Looking Ahead Management reaffirmed its full-year 2025 organic revenue growth guidance of 5%-6% and raised comparable currency-neutral earnings per share growth guidance to about 8% for 2025, though comparable EPS growth is now expected at 3% year-over-year due to a roughly 5-point currency headwind. KO expects positive volume growth in the second half of 2025 as transitory Q2 impacts fade and investment flexibility increases, with concentrate sales in Q3 2025 expected to trail unit cases modestly. The company highlighted robust free cash flow generation ($3.9 billion in Q2, up $600 million versus the prior year's second quarter), and ongoing discipline in hedging and productivity, while confirming that strong first-half 2025 margin gains mean margin expansion will not be weighted toward the second half. The company raised its full-year free cash flow outlook to above $13.5 billion and affirmed revenue growth guidance above 5%, supported by double-digit Red Hat growth, robust automation, and surging AI-related bookings. Key insights below highlight IBM's accelerating software momentum, transformation in productivity, and expanding AI footprint. OpenShift achieved $1.7 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR), and Red Hat's virtualization pipeline grew by over $300 million in total bookings through the first three quarters. "OpenShift growing revenue more than 20% with ARR now at $1.7 billion. IBM productivity transformation expands margins and financial flexibility IBM expanded its operating gross profit margin by 230 basis points, reflecting disciplined execution and productivity initiatives including embedding AI into workflows and optimizing the supply chain by moving distributed infrastructure manufacturing to a strategic partner. IBM exited 2024 with $3.5 billion in annual run rate savings and now expects to reach $4.5 billion by the end of 2025, fueling further margin expansion and cash flow conversion. "We are taking up the year on our productivity initiatives. We exited last year, we talked about $3.5 billion of productivity that we've been able to fundamentally drive out of this business … that's given us guidance and confidence to raise that to $4.5 billion. That flows to operating margin. We're taking our operating margins up from a half a point to now roughly a point … and then we're flowing that all the way down through the cash flow. High quality, sustainable cash flow generation." -- Jim Kavanaugh, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Escalating productivity-driven savings provide IBM with headroom for strategic M&A and ongoing innovation investment. AI portfolio and ecosystem drive differentiated growth at scale IBM's cumulative Gen AI book of business surpassed $7.5 billion since inception, with AI now surpassing 10% of consulting revenue at a more than three-point margin premium compared to non-AI work. Over 150 prebuilt agents and deep partnerships with Oracle, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Salesforce, and others are embedding Watson x solutions across customer workflows, while unique offerings like Code Assistant for z and the newly launched z17 mainframe further strengthen IBM's competitive position in scalable enterprise AI. "Our Gen AI book of business now stands at over $7.5 billion inception to date, with momentum accelerating quarter over quarter. We are seeing strong demand for our AI agents and assistants, REL AI, Granite Models, as well as an accelerating need for our consulting services to deploy AI. Just last week, IBM was recognized as an emerging leader in the first-ever Gartner emerging market quadrant for Gen AI consulting and implementation services." -- Arvind Krishna, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer IBM's leadership in enterprise-scale AI and its partner ecosystem create a powerful flywheel effect, deepening client engagement and underpinning the company's long-term secular growth thesis in AI-powered automation and hybrid cloud environments. Looking Ahead For the full year, IBM reaffirmed constant currency revenue growth of 5% plus (non-GAAP) and raised free cash flow guidance above $13.5 billion. Management expects software to approach double-digit revenue growth, with Red Hat growth in the mid-teens and low-single-digit gains in transaction processing are expected as the z17 mainframe cycle accelerates. Operating pre-tax margin is now expected to expand by about one point for the full year, and IBM is comfortable with consensus expectations for revenue and profit. IMAX Reports Record Q2 Box Office Surge
IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) reported Q2 2025 results on July 24, 2025, delivering record domestic box office results. The company achieved a 41% year-over-year increase in global box office, and adjusted EBITDA margin exceeded 42% for the second quarter in a row. Management raised full-year 2025 system installation guidance to 150-160, reflecting surging demand, and confirmed a replenished backlog with robust installation slate visibility through 2027. The key insights below focus on IMAX's network expansion, competitive dynamics, and sustained profitability drivers. IMAX installations and signings accelerate global reach System installations grew 50% year over year with 36 new installations. Geographic expansion was highlighted by France, the Netherlands, and Japan achieving their largest single-year growth. The company signed 124 new and upgraded systems year to date, nearly matching full-year 2024 signings in just six months. "Given the demand for IMAX systems, moving higher in our range for full-year installations to between 150 and 160 systems worldwide. And we've now completed agreements for 124 new and upgraded IMAX systems worldwide year to date compared to 130 in all of 2024." -- Richard Gelfond, Chief Executive Officer This accelerated pace of installations and new signings expands the addressable market, drives future recurring revenue, and demonstrates management's ability to convert strategic demand into tangible network growth, IMAX box office and market share hit all-time highs IMAX delivered its highest-grossing domestic box office quarter ever, achieving a 3.6% share of global box office on less than 1% of active movie screens, with U.S. and China ticket-sale market shares at 5.3% and 6%, respectively. Major releases such as "Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning" and "F1: The Movie" saw IMAX capture over 20% of opening weekend box office receipts. This is an exceptional achievement, with an average opening-weekend share of about 15% for recent major releases. "With all seven of these films to date, we've averaged about 15% of the North American box office on opening weekend on just 400 IMAX screens, soaring as high as 20% on Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Thinners, and F1 during opening weekend. That's a feat we've only achieved eight times in our entire history. And three of those milestones came in this second quarter." -- Richard Gelfond, Chief Executive Officer This consistent box office outperformance reinforces the brand's status as a must-have premium format for tentpole releases, firmly differentiating it from non-IMAX premium large format (PLF) competitors. Improving operating leverage and capital discipline drive profitability Gross profit grew 22% year over year to $54 million, with consolidated gross margin hitting 58%, driven by box office outperformance, high-margin revenue mix, and tight control of infrastructure expenses. Year-to-date operating cash flow increased 25% year over year to just over $30 million, while adjusted EBITDA margin climbed to 42.6%, up 780 basis points year over year, alongside an expanded $375 million credit facility announced in July 2025. "We've talked about this before, but exceeding box office levels over $250 million in each quarter, essentially, every dollar beyond that flows right through down to EBITDA and to cash at about an 85% conversion rate. And so that's what will continue to generate the cash flow." -- Natasha Fernandes, Chief Financial Officer This strong margin and cash flow conversion indicate that incremental box office is largely accretive, offering substantial upside leverage as the network and slate scale, while prudent investment and low-cost capital structure further protect long-term shareholder value. Looking Ahead Management raised full-year 2025 installation guidance to 150-160 systems and projects adjusted EBITDA margin (non-GAAP) in the low-forties percent range for the full year. Visibility into the film slate now extends through 2027 with a record number of 'film for IMAX' titles secured, supporting confidence in sustained global box office and installation growth. The company reports a replenishing system backlog and expects to set a new annual record for local language box office within Q3 2025.
