Amid a controversy over the Bengali language West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for another Bhasha Andolan language movement ) and alleged that people are being harassed for speaking Bengali in many places.Addressing the 'Maha Nayak Samman' Awards on Thursday, CM Mamata Banerjee said, "Another Bhasha Andolan is needed to awaken everyone. People are being harassed for speaking Bengali in many places. Bengali is the fifth most spoken language in the world, and the second most spoken in Asia. Around 30 crore people speak Bengali, and today, Bengali speakers are being sent to jail."Calling for wider public engagement, she urged for programmes to be held across all levels to raise awareness."I cannot accept this, and I believe you cannot either. People cannot be detained just for speaking Bengali. We cannot tolerate this. Programmes must be organised on this issue at all levels. This issue is not just mine; it belongs to everyone. Bengal is everything to us. We must protect this land," she added.CM Banerjee hailed her mother tongue and said, "We all speak our mother tongue. Children speak 'Maa' for the first time in their mother tongue. However, a language war has been declared over the Bengali language."Taking a dig at West Bengal's film industry, Tollywood , Banerjee criticised the lack of Bengali content in music."These days, where is Bengali in our songs? It is all just loud and flashy music. We already have Bollywood for that. South Indian films are also popular. But Tollywood should have more Bengali songs, not just music," she said.Clarifying her stance, Banerjee said she was not opposed to other languages, but stressed the importance of preserving Bengali."I am not asking anyone to disrespect other languages. But that does not mean we lose our own. We should feel proud of our language. We are proud of all languages, but we cannot do anything by leaving Bengali aside. Let all languages grow in harmony and unity. We have to make Bengal's culture more developed, enriched, widespread, and vibrant. Civilisation is the backbone of a nation," the Chief Minister added.Meanwhile, the row over the Bengali language surfaced after Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress raised the issue during the 'Shahid Dibas' (Martyrs' Day) celebrations on July 21.At the same award ceremony, Banerjee also paid tribute to legendary actor Uttam Kumar . "It has been 45 years, but we can never forget Uttam Kumar. He was so good at lip-syncing. We started this recognition in 2012. He is still very close to our hearts, and I still believe he is the nation's pride, a symbol of our culture and character, the great Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. We remember him on his death anniversary. I truly regret never having met him," she said."I had met Suchitra Sen before her passing, even though she had not met anyone for 20 years. But she wanted to meet me, and I went immediately to see her. I also knew Supriya for a long time. I know Sharmila and Tanuja too. I met many of them at the KIFF, but I could never meet Uttam Kumar, and this absence keeps coming back to me again and again," she added.

Man dies by suicide in Kolkata, family claims he was living in fear of NRC
Kolkata: A 63-year-old man was found hanging in his residence in Kolkata on Sunday morning, with his family claiming that he had been living in fear that he would be sent to Bangladesh if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented. The victim worked as a non-teaching staff member at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata.(For representation/PTI) Initial probe revealed that the deceased, Dilip Kumar Saha, had arrived in Kolkata in 1972 from Nawabganj in Dhaka and had been living in Anandapally West in the Regent Park area, a police officer said. Saha worked as a non-teaching staff member at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. "This morning, his wife called him several times, but received no response from inside his locked room. She then called their niece-in-law from a neighbouring house. They broke open the door to find him hanging from the ceiling fan," the officer said. The deceased's wife Arati Saha said her husband had been worried that he would be deported to Bangladesh after implementation of the NRC. "He has been under severe stress for quite some time regarding this. There was no other tension. He came to Kolkata in his childhood. He was afraid that he would be sent to a detention camp and then pushed back to Bangladesh, where he had nobody. He had valid voter ID card and other documents," she said. It is suspected that this fear led him to take his own life, the police officer said, adding that a suicide note has been recovered from the room. The matter is being investigated, the officer said. Power Minister and local Trinamool Congress MLA Arup Biswas reached the place and spoke to the family members. "This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you," Biswas said.

CM to address MPs as TMC raises protest pitch
1 2 Kolkata: With Trinamool stepping up its attack on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants back home, CM Mamata Banerjee will speak to her MPs virtually on Monday to outline TMC's strategy for the week. The CM's address comes at a time TMC is raising its protest pitch, both in Delhi and Bengal. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is expected to address 9,000 party workers on Aug 5. He will also be part of INDIA bloc MPs' protest march to Nirvachan Sadan this week. BJP has stalled any discussion on SIR in Parliament for the last 10 days, said TMC's Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien. "The SIR vote 'chori' as a subject can easily be discussed in both Houses. BJP is scared. We will give the shaky Modi coalition a tutorial in Parliament and teach them how it can be discussed," he said. On Sunday, TMC MPs submitted notices on the issue of Delhi Police calling the Bengali language the Bangladeshi language, demanding a discussion in Parliament. Speaking at a presser at Trinamool Bhawan, state education minister Bratya Basu said: "They (BJP) are forgetting that it is because of the Bengali language that a new country was formed. Twenty-five crore people speak this language. Our national anthem and the national songs of two countries have been written in this language." "This is a UNESCO-recognised language and one of the first seven languages of the world. When Tamil Nadu got statehood, people gave their lives in a hunger strike. Even today, you can't enter Tamil Nadu while speaking Hindi. But you can speak all languages in Bengal. CM Mamata Banerjee even fights for Toto or Rajbanshi languages," Basu said. "This Hindi imposition goes against the vision of India. You cannot insult Bengali. You cannot label us as a citizen of some other nation. Hindi is a great language, but why are you insulting our Rabindranath Tagore, our DL Ray, our Nazrul Islam?" he added. Kolkata: With Bengali migrants, RG Kar case and SIR on their discussion agenda, Bengal BJP MPs are set to meet Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday. While Trinamool, the Left Front and Congress have been stepping up pressure over the harassment of Bengali migrant workers in BJP-governed states, the party's state unit has maintained that no Indian would suffer.
