Chicopee celebrates Portuguese heritage with flag-raising ceremony

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It was a prideful day for the local Portuguese community in the City of Chicopee.
Many residents and local officials came together to celebrate Portuguese Heritage Month with a flag-raising ceremony.
Mass. officials support local farms during National Dairy Month
The weather brought the event indoors, but it did not stop the festivities. The event showcased the cultural heritage of the Portuguese community with music, dance, and guest speakers sharing their insights into the culture and its historical significance.
'It means a lot to us that we don't get to get together daily,' President of the Portuguese Club Brian Mendes said. 'Events like this bring a lot of friends and family together.'
The celebrations continued at the Portuguese Club in Chicopee, where people sat down and enjoyed a nice lunch. Mendes said the Portuguese Club will be hosting events all month long.

Reuters is reporting that at least 11 children, along with 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals, where on board. Some 30 bodies have been recovered from the scene of the crash. Doctors in Ahmedabad say they have "never seen such mass casualties", according to a local reporter. The Hindustan Newspaper reports "chaos" in local emergency wards with "critical injuries everywhere" and non-stop admissions. The co-pilot had 1100 hours of flying experience. "As per ATC, the aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. "Aircraft immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site." It has now been reported that Flight 171 was hit by "multiple bird strikes" shortly after take off. Speaking to NDTV, Captain Saurabh Bhatnagar, former senior pilot, said: "It looks, prima facie, like a case of multiple bird hits wherein both the engines have lost power. "The take-off was perfect and just, I believe, short of taking the gear up, the aircraft started descending, which can happen only in case the engine loses power or the aircraft stops developing lift. Obviously, the investigation will reveal the exact reason. "From the footage, it seems that the take-off was uneventful. The aircraft came down in a controlled fashion. "The pilot had given the Mayday call, which means that it was a distress situation." Crowds can be seen surrounding the multi-storey building - a medical facility - and looking up at the wreckage. June 12 (UPI) -- An Air India plane carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, the airline said. The airline confirmed the incident involving flight AI171, which lifted off from Ahmedabad Airport at about 1:38 p.m. local time en route to London Gatwick Airport but did not provide further details on what took place. "Air India is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident," the airline said. No details on casualties were given, but the airline said the passengers and crew included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national. Those injured in the incident were taken to nearby hospitals. Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran offered his "deepest condolences" to the families and loved ones of those involved in the crash. "At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all of the affected people and their families," he said. "We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted." The plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed after reaching an altitude of 625 feet shortly after takeoff. "We are aware of initial reports and are working to gather more information," Boeing said. The plane crashed near a doctors' hostel in the Meghani area of Ahmedabad, prompting a swift response from police and fire crews who rushed to the area.
