Met Éireann: Status Yellow rain warning issued for 19 counties

Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow rain warnings that will impact large parts of the country today (June 12). The first warning issued by the national forecaster is for counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, and Sligo. The warning came into place at 11:00a.m today, Thursday, June 12, and will remain in place until 9:00p.m tonight. Met Éireann has said that there will be heavy rain, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. The second warning issued by Met Éireann today, is a status yellow rain warning for the each of the counties in Leinster, and for Co. Waterford, until 6:00p.m today. According to Met Éireann, there is a possibility of localised flooding, poor visibility, and difficult travelling conditions in the areas impacted. Finally, the UK Met Office has put a status yellow rain warning in place for each of the counties in Northern Ireland, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry. The warning in Northern Ireland came into place this morning, and will remain in place until 21:00p.m this evening. The Met Office has said that there is a 'good chance' that driving conditions will be affected by spray and standing water leading to longer journey times. It has also said that some flooding is 'possible', and short term loss of power and other services is 'likely'. Met Éireann Meanwhile, Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow advisory for potato blight over the coming days across the country. The national forecaster said that conditions conductive to the spread of blight will develop nationwide on today and tomorrow (June 12 – 13). Weather conditions which favour the spread of potato blight occur when temperatures rise above 10°C and relative humidity rises above 95%. The typical mild, damp Irish summer can provide the ideal conditions for the spread of the disease. Teagasc has estimated that some €5 million is spent annually on fungicides in Ireland to mitigate against the disease. Potato blight, caused by the pathogen Phytophthora infestans, poses a significant threat to potato crops in Ireland and globally.
