ENG vs IND 1st Test: Hourly weather report of Headingley, Leeds on June 24

Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team have put themselves in strong contention to win the first of the five Tests against England at Headingley, Leeds, after setting a record 371-run target for the home team. India, with the help of centuries from Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the second innings, posted a big total of 364 runs before being bundled out. Now, England will resume Day 5—the final day of the match—needing 350 more runs to win, having finished Day 4 at 21 for no loss. Both teams will fancy their chances of winning the match, but the weather report for Leeds on Tuesday, June 24, tilts the situation towards a draw.
IND vs ENG 1st Test: Leeds weather report for June 24
According to the latest weather reports from AccuWeather.com for Leeds, United Kingdom, on June 24, there is a strong probability of rain starting in the morning. The rain is expected to start at 3 am with 24 per cent chance of precipitation, increasing to 29 per cent at 4 am and 57 per cent at 5 am. The precipitation chances come down to 49 per cent at 7 am before picking up pace again at 9 am—just at the time of the start of the match. Starting 11 am, the rain is expected to calm down in intensity but continue with lighter showers.
Again, the rain is predicted to pick up pace at 2 pm and continue till night. If this report turns out to be accurate, both England and India may have to settle for a draw—bringing an anticlimactic end to an absolutely stellar match.
Despite having the reputation of a batter's graveyard, Headingley usually provides better batting conditions on the last two days of play—as the many run chases at this venue suggest, including Ben Stokes' historic 135* to help England beat Australia in the 2019 Ashes. But to win against India, the hosts have to channel their inner 2022, when they chased down a 378-run target set by India at Birmingham. That match remains the only one to date where India have lost a Test match after setting a 350-plus target in the final innings.

Expected stubbornness but Jay Shah is honest and proper: Ganguly on tenure as BCCI President

NEW DELHI: Reflecting on his eventful tenure as BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he expected a "certain kind of toughness and stubbornness" from the then Board secretary and current ICC chairman Jay Shah but was left impressed with his "honesty" and resolve to do things "properly". Ganguly and Shah were colleagues at the world's richest cricket board from October 2019 to September 2022, navigating a tumultuous phase caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought sporting activity to a grinding halt for few months. "He (Jay) had his own way of doing things but the best thing about him was he wanted to do things properly for Indian cricket," Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview at his residence in Kolkata. "See, he had the power, the support, so you expected certain kind of toughness, stubbornness from him but he would do things for Indian cricket," the iconic former captain explained, referring to Shah's status of being the son of Home Minister Amit Shah. It was the first time that both Ganguly and Shah held BCCI positions. Before that, Ganguly had headed the Cricket Association of Bengal, while Shah was an office-bearer in the Gujarat Cricket Association. While Ganguly was replaced by another former Test player Roger Binny in 2022, Shah continued as BCCI secretary till November 2024 before taking over as the youngest ever ICC chairman at 36 years of age. Asked about how the power dynamics and relationship was between the scion of a political family and a celebrated cricket star, Ganguly said they shared a cordial equation which has continued to this date.

Sanjay Manjrekar Takes Aim At Virat Kohli. Internet Says: "Retired But Your Obsession..."

Sanjay Manjrekar took a cheeky dig at Virat Kohli, while summarising the Shubman Gill -led Team India's performance in the ongoing 1st Test against England in Leeds. Following the Test retirements of Kohli and Rohit Sharma, fans and experts had expressed concerns over the team's batting in the lead up to the series. However, Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and others have performed exceedingly well in the absence of the big stars. Captain and Gill slammed centuries in the first innings, while KL Rahul top-scored for the team in the second innings with a remarkable 137. If that wasn't enough, Pant became the first Asian batter to score hundreds in both the innings of a Test match in England. Taking to social media, Manjrekar said that the young Indian team has silenced its doubters, while taking an indirect dig at Kohli. "Cricket is a by far the no 1 sport in India. There is tremendous incentive for young kids to take up cricket. Hence 'What after fab 4, or what after Virat' is an irrational fear," Manjrekar wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The Test at Leeds has been a run-fest for Team India so far, with their lead well beyond 300 runs. In the first innings, triple treat of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 in 159 balls, with 16 fours), skipper Shubman Gill (147 in 227 balls, with 19 fours and a six) and Rishabh Pant (134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes) powered India to 471. After England's strong reply that left India's lead to just six runs, KL Rahul, who missed out on a fifty in the first innings, got his big one too, while Pant became India's first wicketkeeper-batter with twin Test tons, scoring 118 in 140 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes. It is the sixth time ever that this milestone has been achieved by a team in Test cricket.
