Drunk rugby fan who shouted humiliating sexist abuse at female referee banned and fined

Daily Mail3 hours ago
A female rugby official was verbally abused by a drunk supporter and Ossett RUFC player who shouted 'get your baps out' at the referee.
Casey Johnson was watching his team in action earlier this year when he made the comment which was found by the RFU to have been 'prejudicial to the interests of the game.' A disciplinary panel of English rugby's governing body banned Johnson from playing, coaching and watching rugby for 32 weeks.
He also had to pay £125 in costs. The identity of the referee has been kept anonymous.
In their summary judgement of the incident, the RFU panel said the phrase used by Johnson was 'abhorrent' and 'highly offensive.' Johnson admitted he was 'intoxicated' and 'had no real explanation for why he shouted the phrase'. His ban will expire on March 13 next year.
In the referee's testimony to the RFU, she revealed how she had been 'shocked' by the comment made at her and that her hurt parents were in the crowd.
The RFU said: 'It goes without saying that such a phrase shouted to a woman has no place in society, including rugby, and it plainly goes against rugby's core values. It has the very real potential to impact on the participation of women in rugby and cannot be tolerated.'
Elsewhere, South Africa's hopes of bouncing back from their shock Rugby Championship defeat by Australia have been hit by injuries to iconic captain Siya Kolisi and other key players.
The Springboks, who have won the last two World Cups, lost their No 1 ranking after conceding 38 unanswered points to the Wallabies at the weekend.
The two teams will meet again in Cape Town on Saturday. But Kolisi is out for four weeks with a knee problem while Pieter-Steph du Toit – the current World Rugby men's player of the year – and wing Kurt-Lee Arendse are also set for spells on the sidelines.

Driver in stolen car smashes into armed police van during 100mph chase

This is the moment a driver in a stolen car crashes into an armed police van during a 100mph chase through country roads. Footage released by Wiltshire Police on Saturday (14 August) shows Marlon Henriques fleeing after officers tried to pull him over for speeding in a 30mph zone. During the 12-minute pursuit, Henriques exhibited some of the 'worst and most reckless driving' the force had ever seen, as he ran red lights and almost smashed into an army truck. He then crashed into the rear of a van, which caused it to overturn off the road and hit a tree, before then colliding with a police firearms vehicle. Henriques, 30, of Tidworth, Wiltshire, admitted to taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified and uninsured. He was jailed for 22 months and disqualified from driving for four years and 11 months at Salisbury Crown Court on Thursday (14 August).

Moment man found guilty of attempted murder in Dalston shooting pulls up outside restaurant

A man who has been found guilty of the attempted murder of a nine-year-old girl in Dalston was caught on CCTV driving towards the restaurant where the shooting took place. Footage released by the Metropolitan Police on Monday (18 August) shows a Nissan Juke being driven by Javon Riley, 33, heading towards Evin restaurant on Kingsland High Street on 29 May 2024. Riley drove past the restaurant several times to ensure the intended targets, three men who belonged to a rival gang, were present. A gunman on a motorbike then pulled up and opened fire six times. One of the bullets lodged in the girl's brain. Police said Riley was instrumental in ensuring the shooter evaded capture, transferring him from the scene as well as disposing of the firearm. Neither the gunman nor the weapon has been found. Riley will be sentenced on Friday, 12 September at the Old Bailey.
