China building strong foundation for next wave of AI, robotics: Unitree CEO

As the head of China's humanoid robotics start-up Unitree disclosed its annual revenue has passed one billion yuan (US$139.4 million), entrepreneurs and scholars said the country's strong data infrastructure, mature supply chain and vast market position it as a potential leader in the next wave of development for artificial intelligence (AI).
'The rising attention on our industry, along with increasing demand and support, has created the essential conditions for leading companies to grow rapidly,' Wang Xingxing said during a panel discussion on Thursday at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, where he announced the milestone.
The Unitree founder and CEO said support from the government of Zhejiang province, where the company is based, along with its favourable business environment and
rich talent pool , all contributed to his firm's success since its founding in 2016.
Li Haitao, dean of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, said at the same panel China has 'tremendous potential' in AI.
'Only two countries can lead the AI revolution in the next decade so far,' Li said during the World Economic Forum event, also known as 'Summer Davos'.
'One is America. One is China.'

The country's soybean imports hit a record July high this year.

Zhou Ming, renowned as the mastermind behind key industrial software used in planes such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A380, has left his leadership role at US-based global engineering giant Altair to return to China. Advertisement An announcement on the website of the College of Engineering at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Ningbo said Zhou had joined as a chair professor and the first dean of the college in June and was already setting up a research team. Zhou also confirmed the move on his personal social media accounts, saying: 'I'm excited to drive frontier research addressing global challenges while inspiring the next generation of technology innovators. It's incredibly energising to be part of a mission far larger than ourselves.' The university said Zhou would 'establish a world-class research and development team for engineering software and optimisation design technology'. It will focus on core engineering software technology with the aim of 'empowering the independent innovation and enhancement of core competitiveness in China's high-end manufacturing industry'. Altair is a global leader in engineering software and computational science, focusing on simulation, data analysis, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. The name of Huawei's chipset, which was designed by semiconductor design subsidiary HiSilicon , was found prominently displayed in screenshots shared online by Pura 80 users after a system update of the handset. Information about the processors used by Huawei on 5G smartphones, including the Mate 60 Pro and Mate 70 series , was previously uncovered only via third-party teardown analyses, without any official confirmation from the Shenzhen -based company. Privately held Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The Kirin 9020, first seen in Huawei's Mate 70 smartphones last year, was made by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) using the advanced 7-nanometre production process, according to a report by Canadian research firm TechInsights published in December.
