Yogi wants land ownership for 10k families from then East Pakistan

directed officials on Monday to provide land ownership to over 10,000 families displaced from then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, between 1960 and 1975, and settled in and around Pilibhit, Lakhimpur, Bijnor and Rampur.
The CM said if land was not available, alternative plots should be provided to affected families. Officials said that though these families had even constructed homes, land had not been transferred to them legally for various reasons.
Calling this action a "national responsibility" and not just a matter of land transfer, the CM said, "This would be an opportunity to acknowledge the years of struggle these families went through after leaving their homes and moving to India to resettle."
"These families, which took refuge in India and have waited for rightful rehabilitation, must be treated with sensitivity and dignity. It is the moral responsibility of govt," he said.
The CM said that with the repeal of the Govt Grants Act in 2018, it was necessary for govt to explore alternate legal mechanisms to provide land rights to the resettled families. He directed officials to look for new provisions within existing laws to address these issues.

Amid complaints of lack of cooperation by officials on the ground, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday called a meeting with the MPs, MLAs and officials concerned from Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi divisions before giving approvals to development projects and schemes in their areas. The idea behind such a meeting, referred to as 'mandalwar samvad' (divisional dialogue), is to hold discussion with the public representatives before giving shape to projects and schemes in their constituencies, sources said. Similar division-level meetings will be held in the future, an official said. The move is being seen as an attempt by the Chief Minister to resolve purported differences between officials and public representatives at the grassroots level in the run-up to the upcoming panchayat elections and the 2027 Assembly polls in the state. In the meeting, which was held at the CM's official residence in Lucknow, projects worth Rs 4,901 crore were finalised for Jhansi division, projects worth Rs 3,875 crore for Chitrakoot division and about projects worth Rs 10,914 crore were okayed for six districts of Kanpur division, it is learnt. Officials said public representatives were given the opportunity to propose schemes and projects for their areas, on which discussion was held over their viability and other issues. The projects proposed by the MLAs included that of road connectivity, irrigation, logistical hubs and approach roads to religious places. 'During the meeting, the Chief Minister asked the officials to take the opinion of the public representatives before finalising the projects for their constituencies and areas. While he asked the public representatives to monitor the implementation of government schemes in their areas and ensure their proper implementation,' said a senior official. 'He took feedback from the MLAs and MPs about the ground situation, administrative coordination and public expectations in their constituencies,' he added. The Chief Minister also directed the officials to ensure that the names of local representatives are engraved on the foundation or inauguration stones of development projects, he said. In the past, many public representatives, including ministers, have raised concern over lack of cooperation by officials in the implementation of projects or resolution of public grievances in their constituencies. 'Officials were given instructions by the Chief Minister keeping in view the issues raised by the public representatives. It is a healthy exercise as we as public representatives approach officials with the public issues so that things change on the ground,' said an MLA, who attended the meeting on Sunday.

Women candidates can use both maiden and married names on EVMs, says Maharashtra Election Commission
Pune: The State Election Commission (SEC) has allowed women candidates to display both their pre-marriage (maiden) and post-marriage names on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), provided they formally request it and meet the eligibility criteria, senior officials told TOI over the weekend. The directive, issued ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, is expected to benefit women known in public life by both names. But officials clarified that the name on the nomination form must match the name in the voters' list. Once the nomination is submitted, candidates may file an application with the returning officer requesting both names appear on the EVM. The application must be filed before the final date of withdrawal of candidature, the SEC stated. To support the request, candidates will need to submit a marriage certificate or a govt-issued gazette notification confirming the name change. In the absence of a gazette, one of 17 acceptable proofs — as prescribed by the SEC in a 2011 order — may be submitted. However, the official added that both names will appear in full on the EVM only if space permits. Maharashtra has reserved 50% of seats for women in municipal corporations, councils, nagar panchayats, zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. Of these, over 1,370 seats in municipal corporations and 3,885 seats in councils and nagar panchayats have been set aside for women candidates. Civil society groups and political observers welcomed SEC's decision. "This is a progressive step. In many Maharashtrian households, a woman's name changes completely after marriage. Allowing both names helps her preserve her identity," said a political analyst. A former PMC corporator said it would help women who are known by their maiden names in the area, and putting both names would be an advantage for them. "Since the SEC has announced it much ahead of the actual polls, I would consider giving all the documents to ensure that both my maiden name and the name post-marriage is included," the former corporator told TOI.
