Zara's mother says not in right state of mind to insist on autopsy in immediate aftermath
In a Facebook post, Noraidah Lamat said she was in a state of shock and panicked when she signed the document declining the autopsy.
There was no one to provide her with advice not to sign the document refusing the autopsy.
'I was shocked, panicked and could not make a proper decision during the incident. No advice was given and if we had known, we would not have signed the document refusing the autopsy,' Noraidah said in a comment on Facebook under the handle of "Noie AiDa".
The 45-year-old woman admitted that she could not think clearly when asked to give permission for an autopsy to be conducted on her daughter, Zara Qairina, 13, who died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 here on July 17.
'There was no clear explanation and I am not used to cases like this. I panicked and was not given any advice on the post-mortem process.
'If I had known (the importance of conducting a post-mortem), I would not have signed the document to refuse the post-mortem,' she said.
Her lawyer, Hamid Ismail, confirmed that the account with the username "Noie AiDa" belonged to Noraidah.
On Wednesday (Aug 13), Bukit Aman revealed that there was indeed a procedural non-compliance by the police in failing to conduct a post-mortem.
However, Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M Kumar said Noraidah herself signed a document issued by the hospital not to allow a post-mortem to be conducted on her daughter's remains.
Zara Qairina died on July 17 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a day after being found unconscious beside a drain at her religious school dormitory in Papar.
The Attorney General's Chambers then ordered that the Form 1 student's body to be exhumed and a post-mortem performed on Sunday (Aug 10).
Zara Qairina's body was reburied at the Tanjung Ubi Islamic Cemetery in Sipitang on Aug 11.

Participants in Kota Kinabalu also carried placards, posters, and banners with messages of solidarity, including "Justice For Zara," as a show of unity in demanding the truth. Police maintained order, and the event remained peaceful. The rally turned particularly sombre when Saimah Alkan, 37, from Tuaran, took the stage. Hugging her daughter tightly, she managed only a few words before tears flowed, evoking a wave of sympathy among the crowd. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Saimah, a mother of a daughter the same age as the late student, appealed to the government to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served for Zara Qairina. The incident involving the Form One student has drawn widespread sympathy, with calls for authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind the case. The Malay language daily also reported that participants of various ages began filling the location as early as 8pm on Saturday to gather in solidarity for Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, in Papar, at about 4am on July 16. Earlier, security personnel were seen monitoring the gathering site to ensure the event proceeded peacefully. Several community activists also delivered speeches of solidarity, demanding justice for the 13-year-old student. Attendees held placards reading "Justice For Zara Qairina" and "We Reject Bullying" while chanting the solidarity slogan. Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Sinar Harian reported thousands gathered peacefully at the #JusticeforZara rally in Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz, also known as Padang Polo, on Saturday. Organised by the Perak People's Awareness Association, the gathering aimed to show solidarity and demand justice for Zara Qairina. Participants carried placards and banners with messages such as "Justice For Zara", "We want justice for sister Zara", "Justice Is Not To Be Silenced", "Justice Must Be Upheld", and "Stop Bullying Now". Earlier, rally participants also performed special prayers and recited prayers for the deceased. To date, the police have taken more than 80 witness statements, including from students, while the Attorney General's Chambers announced that a full inquiry will be conducted in the Coroner's Court to determine the exact cause of death.
