Selangor announces water price hike
Homes using more than 35m3 of water monthly, which is equivalent to 35,000 litres, will now have to pay RM3.51/m3 for each cubic meter above 35m3, which is an increase of RM0.88/m3.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that this measure was aimed at encouraging more optimal and responsible usage of water.
However, homes using up to 20 cubic meters (m3) will not face any increase and would continue paying the existing rate of RM0.65/m3.
'This means there will be no increase as the current rate underwent a review in February 2024.
'The minimum charge for domestic users will also remain at RM6.50," said Amirudin in a statement on Friday (Aug 1).
The new rates are in tandem with the Federal Government's approval of the application made by the states and Federal Territory Labuan to improve the services of treated water to both people and the various industries.
Those in condominiums, estates and government quarters will see an increase of RM0.41/m3, with consumers having to pay RM2.09 for each cubic metre.
For condominiums, the minimum charge of RM173 per month will remain without any increase, whilst the minimum rate for estates and government quarters will move to RM20.90/month.
'To reduce the cost of living impact on people living in low-cost housing, the new rate will see the lowest increase among all domestic sub-categories by RM0.10/m3 to RM1.18/m3," said Amirudin.
Places of worship and welfare institutions will only see a minimal increase of RM0.10/m3 to RM0.76/m3.
This was to ensure that places of worship and welfare institutions are not severely impacted, said Amirudin.
Not wanting to overly burden businesses, commercial entities and non-domestic buildings will be charged the same rate as domestic households using more than 35/m3, which is RM3.51/m3 with an increase of RM0.57 for each cubic metre.
Non-domestic buildings consuming beyond 35/m3 of water will move up to a rate of RM3.83/m3 for each cubic metre over 35/m3.
Amirudin said since the shipping industry also uses a considerable amount of water, it will now have to pay a new rate of RM8.01/m3.
The state has also included data centres as a new category, given that they require over a million litres per day to cool the systems in these centres.
Data centres will now be charged RM5.31/m3 of water.
Amirudin said the new rates will come into effect on Sept 1 this year.
'The state government will continue to provide free water monthly worth RM13 to 337,851 accounts through the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme (SADE)," added Amirudin.
He said the state government will also increase the household income eligibility for SADE from RM5,000/month to RM6,000/month to assist people who are truly in need.

GRS-PH cooperation formula to continue - Hajiji

RANAU (Aug 12): Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor reiterated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has agreed to maintain the present formula of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election. He said history has shown that a state government needs to have a strong relationship with the Federal Government. 'We want strong ties with the Federal Government. We want stability and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them. The Chief Minister said the present GRS-PH State Government's track record of bringing progress to Sabah has been proven. Hajiji said this was contrary to the opposition's claim, which he said was intended to pull wool over the people's eyes. Hajiji said the GRS-PH government had approved numerous assistance programmes for the state's education development and people's prosperity, which had never been done by other state governments before. 'This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will be continued if the people returned the mandate to GRS-PH in the coming election,' he said. He also said that the GRS-PH State Government had succeeded in getting greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. Earlier, he said that the State Government, through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA), is committed to continuing its agenda of addressing urban and rural poverty in the state through the new township development programme. He said the long-awaited Paginatan New Township project is expected to drive the local economy in the area, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, which at its core, aims at prioritising the well-being of the people and improving their quality of life. The 200-acre new township, located approximately 43 km from here, will be developed in five phases, involving the construction of various important amenities, including government offices, shops, low-cost housing, multi-purpose hall, library, health centre, market, police and fire stations. Once completed, the people in Paginatan would no longer have to go to Ranau or Telupid to deal with government departments, he said. State to hold workshops to boost Orang Asli economy

Selangor government will hold workshops to identify eligible Orang Asli who qualify for government assistance. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said Orang Asli participation in the various government programmes remained low. 'For instance, only 10 Orang Asli villages in Selangor have applied for funds under Sejati Madani. 'Sejati Madani is a Federal Government programme that allocates between RM50,000 and RM100,000 to boost the economy of villages. 'Hence, I will ask the state standing committee in charge of Orang Asli to identify eligible beneficiaries through workshops,' he said after attending the state-level Orang Asli Festival at Kampung Orang Asli Kelinsing in Sepang, Selangor. Amirudin said the state aimed to promote the Orang Asli economy by designating their handicrafts as official souvenirs for government departments, agencies and events. He said the state would showcase unique items of cultural and heritage importance like the Orang Asli woven headgear. 'This step will not only showcase the community's identity, but create new market opportunities to increase their income. 'These items can be used as souvenirs for Asean conferences and the like, hence introducing these products to a wider stage,' he said. State human resources and poverty eradication committee chairman V. Papparaidu who was present at the event, said the state was committed to creating opportunities and providing avenues for the Orang Asli community to actively participate in various education-related initiatives. Anwar rebuffs claims of inaction by Madani govt
KOTA BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed surprise and disbelief that certain quarters continue to claim the Madani Government has done nothing since taking over the country's administration. He emphasised that the Madani Government has undertaken numerous efforts to enhance governance and improve the welfare of the people. "It's fine to disagree, and criticism of the government is allowed, but they must also acknowledge the progress we've made. "During every Cabinet meeting, I urge each ministry to improve and expedite what is necessary. "So don't deny the changes we've made by constantly claiming in every speech that the government has done nothing. Don't just be angry all the time. "Indeed, what we are doing is still not enough, but we are always working to improve," he said. Anwar made the remarks during the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme here today. Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Meanwhile, in his speech, Mohd Nassuruddin expressed hope that the Federal Government would consider approving several key projects in Kelantan to support the state's development and public safety. Among the projects mentioned were the construction of the Sungai Lebir Dam in Kuala Krai as a flood mitigation structure, a regional sewage treatment plant in Tunjong and the formation of the Rantau Panjang Special Economic Zone. He also highlighted the need for the East Coast Expressway Phase 3 (LPT3) and a Collection, Processing, and Packaging Centre (CPPC) in Lojing to establish Kelantan as a major national food production hub. "The state government sincerely hopes the federal government will give due consideration to these projects and ensure the required allocations are disbursed soon. "We believe that only through continuous and close cooperation, accompanied by mutual strengthening between federal and state levels, can we achieve a comprehensive, inclusive development agenda with high impact for the people. "With a work culture rooted in Ubudiyyah (servitude), Mas'uliyyah (accountability), and Itqan (excellence), the state government will continue to provide full cooperation, especially in advancing the people's well-being and ensuring Kelantan stays on the right track toward achieving Kelantan Sejahtera 2033 under the Islamic Development Strategy," he said. He further welcomed the federal government's focus on less-developed states, saying it would help address development imbalances. "This is because the distribution and benefits of development aimed at making Malaysia a developed nation by 2030 must be implemented fairly and inclusively. "I hope this intention will receive serious attention from the prime minister, alongside the announced initiatives, to ensure that Kelantan is not left behind in national development. "It is time for Kelantan to stand on equal footing with other states, particularly in terms of infrastructure, investment, and public welfare," he added.
