UEFA agree Champions League rule change next season after Arsenal controversy

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side were knocked out of the Champions League by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain after being forced to play away in the second leg of their semi-final
UEFA are set to make an alteration to Champions League rules following the first season operating the tournament's new format. The European governing body are preparing to hand home advantage to the teams who perform best in the league phase for the duration of the knockout round after both Arsenal and Barcelona were denied that and met heartbreaking exits.
The first edition of the expanded 36-team tournament, which saw Paris Saint-Germain comprehensively crowned champions over the weekend, guaranteed that clubs who finished in the top eight of the league phase would play the second leg of their round of 16 tie at home. But from that point, the competition utilised an open draw meaning side's finishing position in the table counted for nothing in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Arsenal and Barcelona finished second and third respectively in the league phase but were forced to play away in the second leg against opponents PSG and Inter Milan, who were ranked 15th and fourth. From next season, the opposite will be ensured.

UEFA's club competitions committee agreed to the change in a meeting ahead of Saturday's Champions League final. Regulations for 2025/26 have already been published but modifications can be made if ratified by the Executive Committee.
A virtual meeting is expected to be held no later than the League Phase draw, which takes place on August 28th.
Both Arsenal and Barcelona saw their performances early in the competition count for little at the quarter-final stage too. Real Madrid were only ranked 11th but still were able to host the second leg against Arsenal at the Bernabeu.
Barca meanwhile had to travel to Germany to confirm their progression over Borussia Dortmund. Both sides found success but were unable to replicate it in tighter affairs at the final four.
Reports claimed that Mikel Arteta's side voiced their displeasure over the situation they found themselves in. The club are said to have felt aggrieved that their consistency in the league phase wasn't rewarded in the knockout stages.
Following Arsenal's exit, Arteta claimed that the Gunners were the best team in the competition. Speaking in his press conference after the defeat, the Spaniard said his team deserved more.

"Talking about merits, I think we deserve much more. When you analyse both games, who has been the best player, the MVP, has been the same player, the goalkeeper.
"And the Champions League is decided in the boxes and it's won the game for them because obviously today after 20 minutes and what happened in London as well, the result should have been very different.

"So I can take a lot of positives and I'm very proud of the team. We have to arrive in the competition at this stage with the full squad, full available, in best condition. We haven't got that, so let's put that aside.
"Still, the team that I've seen today against is probably one of the best, if not the best team in Europe. It gives me so much pride but at the same time I'm so upset, so annoyed that we didn't manage to do it."

Cesc Fabregas says he believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid links to Inter

The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer. ⚫🔵✍️#ForzaInter #WelcomePetar — Inter ⭐⭐ (@Inter_en) June 4, 2025 'I really believe in Como's long-term project,' he said. 'I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition. 'The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. 'We've become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club but with big, very big ambitions for the future.' Inter meanwhile have signed Croatia international Petar Sucic from Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder, who has seven international caps, played last season on loan at Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Sweden boss flatly rejects Gyokeres transfer claims amid ongoing Arsenal talks

Viktor Gyokeres has been forced to withdraw from Sweden's squad for this week's international break through injury as speculation mounts over his future at Sporting Lisbon Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has denied that Viktor Gyokeres has left the national team squad to avoid injury amid a potential move to Arsenal. Gyokeres is one of the hottest properties on the market this summer. The striker has scored a ridiculous 97 goals in 102 games across two years with Sporting Lisbon, winning successive Primeira Liga titles. His contract runs until the summer of 2028 but it appears increasingly likely he will leave the Estádio José Alvalade. ‌ Arsenal are among the clubs chasing his signature as they search for a new striker. They have opened talks with the Portuguese giants over a potential deal, though first comes an international break. ‌ Sweden will face Hungary and Algeria in friendlies across the next week, with the Scandanavians not starting their World Cup qualification campaign until September. Even so, the two friendlies are a good chance for Tomasson to assess his squad. Gyokeres had been included in the original 24-man group for the games in Budapest and Stockholm. But on Tuesday it was announced that the 27-year-old would be leaving the group early. That sparked rumours that Gyokeres may have pulled out in order to protect himself from picking up an injury which could potentially scupper a big summer move. But that talk has now been rubbished by Tomasson. "No! He felt a small injury and our medical team was already aware of it and we decided, together, to release him," Tomasson said. "I spoke to Viktor last week. He hasn't trained much in the last few weeks and was feeling some discomfort because of a small injury. "I was happy to see him and have him with us in this training camp. It says a lot about Viktor, how much he wants to get involved. We're thinking about it [a replacement] and need to talk more about it. In a perfect world, we have all players available." ‌ The Swedish FA released a short statment earlier this week to confirm Gyokeres' exit. It read: "Viktor Gyökeres is not available for the men's national team's friendlies against Hungary and Algeria due to a minor injury. "The striker will leave the squad after dialogue with the national team's medical team. Gyökeres needs to rehabilitate a minor injury and is therefore not available for the upcoming international matches against Hungary and Algeria. "In consultation with the medical team, the decision has been made that Viktor will leave the national team. The men's national team will face Hungary on June 6th away and Algeria at Strawberry Arena on June 10th." ‌ The striker provided an update on his future earlier in the week. He insisted that he had not made a decision on his future despite the Gunners having opened talks with Sporting chiefs. "We will see… nobody knows anything yet," Gyokeres said on the Flymoduspod podcast. "I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now."
