Army of volunteers behind Badminton Horse Trials

BBC News06-05-2025

More than 800 volunteers turn up every year to help out at the Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire which run this week between 7 - 11 May.For one couple the event, which attracts about 200,000 visitors to watch the best horses and riders in the world, it really is a love affair.Martin Fleur-Lane met his wife-to-be Emma nearly 25 years ago by the finish of the cross country course."We subsequently got engaged a few years later by the lake, so there are many happy memories for both of us, with families and friends attending with us over the years," says Emma.
Throughout the year, Martin travels past Badminton every day to his furniture workshop in Luckington. He has been volunteering at the event since about the mid 90s.Mostly, he says he would be riding a quad bike delivering dressage scores down to the secretaries and giving lifts to riders from the lorry park to other areas of the ground.
"As a fence judge you are judging whether a horse and rider have both cleared the fence without incurring any penalties between the white and the red flags, which are positioned either side of the fence. "During the day you also need to blow a whistle towards the next fence to alert them each time a competitor is approaching and to alert spectators in the immediate area that a horse is galloping down the track. "It's like a chain of whistles going around the course so that people know a competitor is on their way."Emma has been volunteering since about 2003. "We have regularly volunteered at various events over the years taking on various roles such as cross country steward, doing the start box, doing provisional scores in the cross country control box and dressage score writing," she said.
Jane Tuckwell, the event director said she could not manage without her army of volunteers."MARS Badminton Horse Trials are incredibly grateful to all the wonderful volunteers that throw themselves 100% into the event to make it happen," she said. Martin and Emma along with the hundreds of other volunteers do it because they love it."I have been coming since I was a little girl and always loved it," said Emma."For me it is my Christmas and is the highlight of the year. "We have met many wonderful people over the years fence judging at events and made numerous friends who we regularly see throughout the year or team up with to fence judge with or work in other areas of events we attend."It takes many years of hard work and dedication from the riders, owners and support teams around them to get to this level and a lot of luck. "You are seeing the best of the best here this week."
"Badminton is not only to us, but to many people is the premier event in the world for everyone to come and enjoy and have such a fantastic weekend whether your horse mad or not it's just a fabulous day out for all the family and the dogs love it too!"

With less than 48 hours until the transfer window opens, here are the latest transfer rumours surrounding Scottish football... Celtic agree deal for 'fearless winger' Celtic appear set to make Nordsjaelland winger Benjamin Nygren their first new signing of the summer transfer window. The Parkhead club have already sealed a return for former left-back Kieran Tierney, who has rejoined his boyhood side on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Arsenal. Now manager Brendan Rodgers is closing in on the capture of Sweden international Nygren after reportedly beating off competition from clubs across Europe to agree personal terms with the 23-year-old. Nygren scored 16 goals and registered four assists last season to earn a place in the Superliga Team of the Year. He also recently made his international breakthrough with two goals in three caps. His Sweden teammate, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, recently talked up the player's abilities. 'It was very good to play with Benjamin," Isak said. "I really enjoyed it. It's clear he is a fearless player who has a lot of confidence. Playing with a winger like that who is able to provide good crosses can only be beneficial for someone like me. I think he did incredibly well in the two games (against Hungary and Algeria) and it was a nice boost for him that he was also able to score his goal too.' Rangers target defender New Rangers head coach Russell Martin has identified his former defender, Harry Darling, as a signing target, according to a report. The centre-back played under Martin at both Swansea City and MK Dons and is available on a free transfer this summer after rejecting an offer to remain with the Swans following the expiry of his contract. According to the Rangers Review, the 25-year-old could be set for a reunion with Martin at Ibrox, although there is rival interest from clubs across the English Championship. He's got athleticism, mentality, technical ability and, first and foremost, he's a great character." The 32-year-old former England international has one year left on his contract at Leicester City who are looking to offload players following their relegation from Premier League. Rangers are in the market for centre-backs after bidding farewell to Leon Balogun, while Robin Propper is also expected to depart with a move back to his former club FC Twente mooted. Atletico Madrid want Scotland star Scotland captain Andy Robertson has emerged as a serious target for La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. The Liverpool left-back is facing an uncertain future at Anfield amid reports that the club are closing in on the signing of Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez as his replacement. Robertson, capped 84 times, recently spoke of still having "a few good years left" after making 33 Premier League appearances across Liverpool's title-winning campaign. The 30-year-old former Queen's Park, Dundee United and Hull City defender only has one year left on his Reds contract and is reportedly keen on the making the move to Madrid.

Harry Darling battle heats up as Rangers boss Russell Martin battles old club and rivals in early test of spending power

We told you at the start of the week how the centre half, who is a free agent as his contract expires at Swansea City, was high on Martin's wanted list. Darling, 25, made 39 appearances for Swansea last season as they finished 11th in the Championship. He's a powerful centre half whose made more than 100 appearances for the Welsh outfit. He's a headline writers' dream and has an eye for goal too - even if he isn't the tallest. And he's worked with Martin twice, at both MK Dons and Swansea, where he knows all about his preference for his teams to be able to play out from the back. Back in his Swansea days, Martin said: 'He's very young and hungry and he possesses all the attributes you need to play at the very top, in my opinion, and it's up to us to help him unlock those now. 'He's got athleticism, mentality, technical ability and, first and foremost, he's a great character." Darling could be a key acquisition in an area where the Gers let Leon Balogun walk at the end of his deal - as major question marks remain over the future of Robin Propper. But the bad news for the Ibrox men is that they may have to push the boat out amid major interest in the player from one of Martin's former clubs, Norwich City - whose manager Liam Manning ALSO worked with the player at MK Dons. Manning said this week: "I had a terrific time with Harry a few years ago at MK, and I thought he was outstanding. And look, he's really excelled at the level. For me, I think he's someone that's showing what he's capable of at Championship level." Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Big-spending Birmingham City are interested too, as are ambitious Wrexham. Swansea City would clearly love to keep him but the chances of that are diminishing and director of football Richard Montague recently admitted the cub were desperate to avoid such scenarios from cropping up in future. Darling is not the first Swansea player in recent seasons to see his contract come to an end – and Montague accepts the club must look to avoid similar scenarios in the future. He said: "We want to keep our best players and we don't want to get in the situation where those players can do what Harry has been able to do, which is brilliant for Harry but less good for us as a club. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Rangers explore free transfer deal for Swansea centre-back

The Ibrox boss is thought to be keen on a deal for the defender he coached at both MK Dons and Swansea. Darling, 25, is a free agent after his contract at Swansea City expired at the end of last season. The Swans had attempted to keep Darling with a contract offer tabled to the stopper; however, interest from elsewhere means he is expected to leave on a free. According to The Rangers Review, Martin is interested in reuniting with the player at Rangers with the possibility of a free transfer move being explored. Read more: English Championship clubs are also thought to be interested in a move for Darling this summer. It comes as Rangers are also working to sign Conor Coady from Leicester City. The defender, 32, has a year left on his contract with Rangers eyeing a move for the versatile central defender.
