How Emmanuel Macron met Brigitte and the scandals of France's first couple

Time of India27-05-2025

Macron met Brigitte as a teen in her literature class
French President Emmanuel Macron first met Brigitte Auzière in 1993 at La Providence, a Catholic high school in Amiens. He was 15 years old, the legal age of consent in France, and she was his 39-year-old literature and drama teacher. Brigitte was also married and a mother of three, including one daughter who was in Macron's class.
The relationship began quietly but drew attention the following summer, when Brigitte's family reportedly caught the two sunbathing at her parents' home. The revelation led to outrage within the community. According to Maëlle Brun's biography
Brigitte Macron: An Unfettered Woman
, locals sent anonymous letters to the Auzière family's chocolate business and spat on Brigitte's front door. Friends and neighbors turned against her.

Despite the backlash, Macron maintained his attachment. 'We spoke about everything. And I discovered we had always known one another,' he would later reflect in interviews. Brigitte, then still married to banker André-Louis Auzière, struggled privately, fearing the young Macron would eventually move on. 'My head was in a mess,' she told
Paris Match
. 'I told myself that he would fall in love with someone his age. It didn't happen.'
A decade-long affair ends in marriage
The scandal grew as Macron left Amiens for a prestigious high school in Paris, yet the pair remained in contact. Every Friday, he would reportedly board a train after classes to see Brigitte. Over the years, her marriage deteriorated. The divorce was finalized nearly a decade after their affair began.
Live Events
In 2007, Emmanuel and Brigitte were married in Le Touquet, the beach town where her family kept a weekend home. Macron was 29. Brigitte was 54. Her three children attended the wedding, along with Macron's parents.
At the wedding, Macron acknowledged the difficulties his new family had faced. 'Each and every one of you is a witness to these last 13 years,' he said. 'And you have accepted us.'

After their marriage, Brigitte left her teaching job to support Macron's growing political career. When he became finance minister in 2014, she acted as his closest advisor. She remained prominent as he campaigned for president, often appearing at his side.
Rumors, media scrutiny, and political ascent
The couple's age gap and origin story continued to attract media coverage and public speculation. Some critics questioned the authenticity of their relationship, while others pushed unfounded rumors, including claims Macron was covering up a homosexual relationship. The president denied those rumors, but biographer Brun notes Brigitte was privately shaken.
Despite this, the couple's image as a unified political team solidified. In 2017, Macron won the presidency at age 39, the youngest in French history, cementing Brigitte's role as an unconventional First Lady.
She later addressed the scrutiny in an interview with
Elle France
: 'We have breakfast together, me with my wrinkles, him with his youth, but it's like that.'
Viral Vietnam video renews public fascination
In May 2025, renewed interest in the couple's relationship surfaced after a video showed Brigitte Macron appearing to shove her husband's face as they arrived in Vietnam. Macron dismissed the moment as playful, saying they were 'joking,' and urged observers to 'calm down.'

But with France also facing economic warnings and ongoing political uncertainty, including a December government collapse and recent drug rumor denial from the Elysée Palace, the resurfacing of their decades-old scandal has renewed public fascination with the origins of Macron's personal life, and its lasting influence on his political identity.

Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' falls short of 'Indian 2' premiere day advance bookings in the USA

Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life,' directed by Mani Ratnam, is set for a strong U.S. debut, earning $454,000 in advance sales. However, it trails Haasan's 'Indian 2,' which has already grossed $580,431, becoming his biggest North American premiere. 'Thug Life' faces controversy in Karnataka, with its release postponed due to Haasan's remarks on Kannada's origin. Kamal Haasan 's much-anticipated gangster drama Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam , is poised for a solid debut in the United States, though it has fallen short of matching the premiere day advance booking numbers of Haasan's upcoming film Indian 2. Advance ticket sales for Thug Life's U.S. premiere have reached US $454,000 across 375 locations, covering over 1000 shows and selling more than 17,000 tickets. Industry analysts are projecting that the film's total North American premiere day earnings could go up to US $ 800,000 positioning it as Haasan's second-biggest premiere day opening in the region.. However, when compared to the advance sales of Indian 2, which is set to release last year, Thug Life trails notably. Indian 2 has already clocked $580,431 in advance sales across 484 locations, with 1,457 shows and 27,935 tickets sold for its U.S. premiere. This makes Indian 2 Haasan's biggest premiere day in North America so far — even before its 2 being a sequel to Kamal Haasan's 1996 hit film Indian- the buzz for the film was much more as compared to Thug Life. Thug Life marks a major reunion between Kamal Haasan and legendary director Mani Ratnam after their iconic 1987 collaboration Nayakan. The film features a stellar ensemble cast including Silambarasan TR , Trisha Krishnan , Joju George , and Ali Fazal , with music composed by A.R. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you 18-79 with no funeral insurance? Back home, however, Thug Life has run into controversy. The film's release in Karnataka has been postponed following backlash against Haasan's recent remarks claiming Kannada originated from Tamil. The statement drew sharp criticism from the Kannada-speaking community and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), which demanded an apology and threatened to block the film's release in the state. Haasan stood by his comments, refusing to apologize, asserting they were misinterpreted. Following escalating tensions, the decision was made to indefinitely postpone Thug Life's release in Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court also weighed in, advising Haasan to apologize to the Kannada community. Despite the controversy, Thug Life continues to generate substantial international interest. The film's strong U.S. advance bookings reaffirm Kamal Haasan's enduring global appeal, though it now has a new bar to beat with Indian 2 already setting an impressive record ahead of its premiere. Japan PM vows to 'energise' S. Korea cooperation under new leader Lee

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, (left), and Japnese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba TOKYO : Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Wednesday he wanted to "energise" cooperation with South Korea, after new centre-left President Lee Jae-myung took power. Spats over territory and a bitter dispute over Japan's use of forced labour during its decades-long 20th-century occupation of the Korean peninsula have long strained ties between the two neighbours. But the countries became closer under South Korea's disgraced former leader Yoon Suk Yeol, including through three-way talks with joint ally the United States. "This year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea," Ishiba told reporters in Tokyo. "With President Lee Jae-myung, I would like to energise cooperation between Japan and South Korea as well as between Japan, the United States and South Korea." Ishiba added that "it would be good if we could hold a Japan-South Korea summit in the near future". Lee won a snap election held six months after a disastrous attempt to declare martial law by South Korea's ex-president Yoon plunged the country into political chaos. "There are various public opinions inside South Korea" towards Japan, Ishiba said. Lee has previously taken a harder line towards the country than Yoon, including saying that the ex-president was "submissive" to Japan, according to Yonhap news agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "The new president has made some statements in the past.
