DENVER (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon's 116 points is tied for the league lead with three games to go in the regular season. That may very well be the total he winds up with, too.
The Colorado Avalanche forward will sit out against Vancouver on Thursday night, marking the first game he's missed this season. He may also be sidelined this weekend for the final two regular season games as a way to both rest and heal up for the playoffs.

Asked if MacKinnon, who has appeared in 209 straight games, was out purely for rest purposes, coach Jared Bednar said, 'he's dealing with something, too. You get to this point in the year, all these guys are dealing with something."
It's been a lot of hockey for MacKinnon, who was the MVP in helping Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. The fast-flying forward has 32 goals and 84 assists this season as he makes a case to win a second straight MVP title. He's tied with Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov for the most points this season.
The 29-year-old MacKinnon was the first skater to reach the 30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110-point marks this season.
'He's such a valuable player,' defenseman Cale Makar said. 'Every single day, what he brings to our team is pretty incredible. In my mind, he's a runaway (MVP winner).'

MacKinnon isn't the only player sitting out the game against the Canucks. The Avalanche also will be without defensemen Ryan Lindgren (upper body) and Josh Manson (upper body), along with forward Jonathan Drouin (upper body).
Meanwhile, up the road in Loveland, Colorado, captain Gabriel Landeskog has joined the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League on a minor league conditioning assignment. He could play with the Eagles on Friday or Saturday — maybe even both — in his comeback bid after nearly three years without playing an NHL game. A knee injury and subsequent surgeries have sidelined Landeskog since he helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022.
Landeskog could be activated for Game 1 of Colorado's first-round playoff series if the conditioning assignment and additional practices go well. The Avalanche will enter the postseason as no worse than the Central Division's No. 3 seed.
'The more excited he gets about a return, the more excited I get," Bednar said. "Because I know there's been lots of peaks and valleys.

'When you're talking about mental toughness, resilience, the work ethic that it takes to go through what he's gone through, and have all those ups and downs and peaks and valleys along his recovery to get to the point where it's possible he could play, that's pretty exciting.'
Landeskog's teammates feel the same way.
'Everybody wants him to be able to come back from this and succeed,' Makar said. 'Everybody's rooting for him in here."

Brown, Milam drive in 4 runs each, LSU beats West Virginia 12-5 to clinch 20th CWS berth
Associated Press BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jake Brown hit a home run and had four RBIs, Steven Milam had two doubles and also drove in four runs and LSU beat West Virginia 12-5 on Sunday night to sweep the best-of-three Baton Rouge Super Regional. No. 6 seed LSU (48-15) clinched the program's 20th berth in the College World Series, where the Tigers will try to win their eighth national championship — all since 1991, the most recent in 2023. Derek Curiel led off the game with a double and scored to make it 1-0 when Brown reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and the Tigers led the rest of the way. Anthony Eyanson (11-2) gave up four runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. Chris Stanfield, Curiel and Ethan Frey each drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Milam cleared the bases with a double off starter Jack Kartsonas (6-4) to spark a five-run second that made it 6-0. After Jace Rinehart hit a two-out solo shot and pinch-hitter Chase Swain drew a walk, Chase Shores came on a struck out Brodie Kresser swinging to end the eighth and the pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. Sam White hit a leadoff homer and Ben Lumsden added a two-run shot in the fourth before White added an RBI single in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4. Stanfield hit a two-RBI single to spark a six-run seventh, capped when Brown's two-run home run gave LSU an eight-run lead. Milam and Josh Pearson each hit a grand slam as LSU beat the Mountaineers 16-9 in Game 1 on Saturday. West Virginia (44-16) set the program's single-season record for wins under first-year coach Steve Sabins. The Mountains advanced to their first-ever super regional last season. The game had originally been scheduled for 5:06 p.m. local time but was delayed approximately three hours due to inclement weather in the area. ___ AP college sports: recommended

The Philadelphia Eagles have a couple players who could contend for the MVP award.
The Philadelphia Eagles have a couple players who could contend for the MVP award. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles were able to win the second Super Bowl in franchise history this past season, and it was due in no small part to the spectacular play from their stars. Advertisement But some think they could get even better in the 2025 season. In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon, he gives five "under-the-radar" candidates for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award this season. The reigning Super Bowl champions happen to have two players on his list, the first of which is star quarterback Jalen Hurts. "Jalen Hurts' fantastic supporting cast probably cost him MVP consideration in 2024, and that's a shame because the uniquely talented star was the NFL's fifth-highest-rated passer while producing a combined 32 touchdowns," Gagnon wrote. "The problem is only 18 of those came through the air, and the tush push doesn't win over too many voters. However, if Hurts can bolster that number in particular, he could have a chance." The Eagles may run the tush-push for a lot of Hurts' rushing touchdowns, but that does not take away the fact that he is an excellent player. If he can bring his passing touchdown number up, he could be a candidate for MVP this season. Advertisement The other play Gagnon thinks could be a sleeper is the Eagles' running back, Saquon Barkley. "The running back and Hurts could again cancel each other out to a degree, and both benefit from the tremendous talent around them," Gagnon wrote. "However, if the Eagles quarterback missed time and more were to fall on Barkley's shoulders—and if Hurts could deliver for a contender—an MVP run is not out of the realm of possibility." The last time a non-quarterback won the MVP award was back in 2012 when future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson won it in 2012. But if there is one person who can break that streak, it is Barkley, who can put the entire team on his shoulders at times. If he can do that this season, he could be a candidate. Our only beef here: These two aren't 'sleeper' candidates for MVP. Rather, they are candidates - period. Advertisement If both players play well this season, they could very well cancel each other out, but they would be very hard to ignore entirely when the MVP conversation comes up. Saudi Arabia's World Cup hopes hinge on a near-impossible task against Australia
A Saudi squad that has scored six goals through nine qualifying games needs to beat Australia by a five-goal margin to earn a direct spot at the 2026 World Cup. Head coach Herve Renard knows it's an extremely unlikely outcome for his Saudi team, but he's urging his players to go all in Tuesday in the last game of the third round of Asian qualifying for next year's global tournament. 'The door is closed but we have to try to qualify even if it is through the window,' Renard said after his team's 2-0 win over Bahrain last week kept Saudi. 'Everything must go very well for us if we are to qualify; we have to score goals.' Anything less than a five-goal deficit means Australia — in second spot in Group C — qualifies for a seventh World Cup. The last time the Socceroos lost by such a margin was in successive 6-0 defeats against Brazil and France in 2013. The Australians have scored 14 goals and conceded six through nine qualifiers. After successive World Cup qualifications through the playoffs, Australia is close to securing a direct route but coach Tony Popovic is taking nothing for granted. 'We need to do a job in Saudi,' Popovic said. 'We're in a great position, but we need to finish it off.' Popovic has only been in the job since September, stepping in after Graham Arnold resigned after collecting just one point in the group's first two qualification games. 'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do,' he said. 'And we're very close now to achieving our goal.' Asia has been allocated eight places at the 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The top two teams in each of the three groups in this round advance directly. The third- and fourth-place teams in each group go into another round vying for two more places. Japan was the first to qualify and will top Group C regardless of the outcome between Australia and third-place Saudi Arabia. Iran and Uzbekistan have qualified from Group A, and South Korea and Jordan have qualified from Group B. If Saudi Arabia fails to win by five, it will join United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia and Iraq in the next stage of qualifying in October. Oman, meanwhile, is fourth in Group B, a point ahead of the Palestinian team in fifth place, with the two teams meeting in Amman on Tuesday. 'We still have everything to play for and we know what we have to do and that is to take all three points and continue our journey,' Palestinian coach Ihab Abujazar said. For China , Kuwait, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain, the run to 2026 is already over. ___ AP soccer:
